Can the ladder come off the back
G'day Chris,
Yes, absolutely. The mounting channel is the same the whole way round, so you can easily mouth the ladder off the back. The only consideration is the rear of your vehicle and if the ladder would fit. For example, if you check out the second to last product image of the Ridgeback mounted on the Prado, the ladder wouldn't actually make it over the rear of the vehicle/spare tyre.
As long as you've got room at the rear, there wouldn't be any issues.
Hi Are the North South mounting rails included in the overall height of 230cm? If not what depth are they. Thanks
G'day Doot,
Yep, it does include the rails, they 30mm deep.
Hope that helps.
Hey, whats the length from the mounting rail on the bottom of tent, to the edge of the tent or the width edge, taken from the external side of the rail?? thanks
G'day Joel,
The mounting rails run long on the Ridgeback, so the tent opens at the back of your vehicle. The distance between the outer edge of the mounting rail and the outer edge of the Ridgeback shell is 27cm.
Hi, my husband found the mattress fine when sleeping on his back, but on his side, he kind of sinks down and says it’s uncomfortable as it feels like he is touching the base of the tent. So, we are looking for an alternate solution. We were thinking of the Exped megamat duo and leaving it with the valves open to close the tent. Do you think it would fit? Thanks
G'day Pustika,
You'll be fine to use a Megamat Duo in the Ridgeback roof top tent, but we can't guarantee that the bedding will fit and everything will close up properly - even with the valves open. Best case scenario you won't have any trouble. Worst case, you may need to pull your quilt/sleeping bag out.
Is the width of the hard shell 136W as stated in the description, does this include the gas struts as well. If struts are included in the 136W dimension, what is the width of the hard shell excluding the struts
G'day Michael,
The shell itself has a small row of railing with screw/rivet caps on the outside, and the width of this is 138cm.
The ladder mounts and gas struts screw to that railing and add an additional 5cm total to the overall width.
Hope that helps.
Will the two (North-South) mounting bars of the RTT fit within the gaps of the Rhino Rack Pioneer Platform's (North-South) bar gaps? If not, does it mean I'll have to relocate the mounting bars of the RTT (which includes drilling new holes)? Or do you have other suggestions in mounting this on the Pioneer Platform without having to drill more holes on the base of the RTT? Please advise.
G'day Hammer,
We're not actually legally able to provide any advice for mounting these RTT, as we dont have your vehicle here to check out, and as this is being attached to a vehicle there are obviously potential safety issues if we dont get it right.
We've had a few customers recently who tried to get info from Darche for the install, but they're in the same boat as us.
You'll need to contact either your local roof rack specialist or qualified installer, or you can generally go direct to Rhino Rack who will point you in the right direction.
Sorry to not be of more help!
Thanks Lauren. Fair enough on the mounting question. How about the first question in my inquiry? Will the mounting bars (North-South) of the RTT fit within the gaps of the bars of the Rhino Rack Pioneer Platform (RRPP) roof rack? If unsure, can you instead provide the distance/gap between the two mounting bars on the RTT and I'll measure the gaps on the RRPP roof rack. I've checked everywhere (incl. Darche's website) and this is not listed anywhere. Thanks.
My apologies for missing that info, sorry!
The mounting bars are 77cm apart, and the bars themselves are 3cm wide.
The bars run from the hinged end, to the open end, and not side to side.
Hope that helps!
Gday Hammer Did you end up mounting this on a Rhino Platform?
Hello Simon. I couldn't get one in time, so I just mounted it on my existing ARB mesh style roof rack, and it's been there nearly 12 months now (since April 2022) with no issues. But I'll eventually replace this rack for the Rhino Rack Pioneer platform one to reduce weight on my roof.
Can you leave bedding in the rooftop or do you have to remove it everytime.
G'day Brad,
The Ridgeback that we have on display can be closed with the Darche 1400 Cold Mountain sleeping bag and some thin pillows left inside.
I'd say generally it shouldn't be an issue, as long as you don't have super chunky bedding!
Does the height include the bottom mounting rails?
Gday Matthew,
Yes, the overall packed height of 23cm included the mounting rails.
Hi can you attach an awning mount to the slot channels on the side of the RTT? If so, what is the weight limit? Cheers
G'day Matthew,
As far as we're aware, you cant.
The awning itself needs to be secured to the roof racks or platfrom on your vehicle.
As you can see from the 4th and 5th product image, this is absolutely achievable with the roof top tent also installed.
Just make sure you are not exceeding the roof load limit of your GVM, which is different from the load rating on the physical roof racks.
We've got an update on this one.
Darche now have specific brackets that allow you to mount an awning to the side of their Ridgeback Rooftop Tents and they are rated to 30Kg per pair. We don't currently have them in our range but please enquire with our customer support team on 1300 914 007 if you would like us to get some for you.
