Turn your own deep cycle battery into a functional power pack with the Smart Battery box from Engel. This smart little box accommodates a standard deep cycle battery up to 130Ah, which means you only need to replace the battery you put inside the box at the end of its life, the charging and power functions are all retained with the Smart Battery box.
This battery box has a 300-watt inverter, so you’ll be able to charge more than one or a high-powered device, and it is compatible with LiFePO4, Gel, Calcium, AGM, and lead-acid batteries. You can charge the battery in your Engel Smart Battery Box by 240V mains power with the included adapter, or when you’re away from the grid from your vehicle’s DC cigarette socket. You can also charge via your solar panel or via the Anderson socket.
Outputs include 2 x cigarette sockets and one Anderson socket, a 240V 50hz AC socket and a 5V USB outlet. It also has 2 external terminals, so you can for use where you just need a positive and negative terminal. Use your battery to your advantage on your next escape with the Smart Battery Box from Engel.
Hi there, will this power a portable diesel heater which seems to need a lot of power on start up?
G'day Karl,
This Smart Battery Box is just the external box with built in terminals and a BMS, so you'll need to provide a battery to go into it that will meet your power requirement needs.
Theres a 10A cigarette terminal and a 50A Anderson terminal, so either of these may be suitable for delivering the requirement current.
You'd need to determine the exact draw the diesel heater needs before we can provide any further info
We have a Series 2 Engel Smart Battery with a LiFe PO4 100aH lithium battery. Would this be capable of running our Starlink setup in our caravan.
G'day Deb,
We dont sell Starlink, so it's hard to give you the right advice.
A quick google suggests the Starlink system will consume around 6A per hour on average, so based on this alone a 100Ah lithium battery would provide 13hrs of power. Ofcourse if you have 200W solar panels that keep the battery topped up, it should cover you.
I would suggest getting in touch with whoever you bought the Starlink from for some more specific advise though - they may have different information regarding real-life usage.
Hope that helps somewhat!
Hi. Could I use it to run a fridge while driving? We have a very old van. It has a 3 way fridge but no battery and no anderson plug. Could I charge a battery, then plug the fridge into it (240v plug) and run it while driving? When parked we would run the fridge off gas and recharge the battery with a solar blanket.
G'day Guia,
You could use this as long as the fridge draws less than 300W via the 240V AC plug and you have a battery that can run the fridge for enough time to keep it running while driving. You will be able to charge the battery via the battery box with solar when switching it over so this could work!
How can this be secured in a vehicle? Are there any tie down points?
G'day Dan,
There are no tie-down points on this battery box, you can get the Hard Korr Battery Box Tray which the Engel Battery Box fits snugly in and then you can tie it down.
Hi, I recently purchased one of these and I plan on charging it with a solar panel. According to the instructions of the battery box it needs some form of regulator. I already have an mppt regulator. Which one is suitable or better?
G'day Anthony,
MPPT is generally considered the better type of solar regulator, even though the current output you're generally dealing with in camping set ups generally isnt high enough for there to be much difference.
If you have an MPPT regulator, thats great! Just check the specs to make sure its compatible with the panels and battery chemistry you intend on using.
Where is the USB outlet
G'day Steven,
Its not obvious from the images, but its on the side next to the 240v outlet.
If you zoom in on the second to last image, you'll be able to see it and the green indicator light.
If I just want to run a 40L Engel fridge/freezer and charge a mobile device or two. What is the advantage of one of these of just having a car battery and connecting them direct to the battery?
G'day Ben,
A car battery has an entirely different function, designed to give a huge burst of power for a short time to crank your car over.
It's not designed to deliver lower amperage slowly over a long period of time, and do that repeatedly.
It's why your battery goes flat if you leave your lights on, and why you'll kill you battery if you do this too many times.
This battery box is just that, an empty box that you can put a deep cycle (not car) battery into. The advantage of this is that you can choose whatever chemistry or capacity battery you like, as long as it fits the physical dimensions. You have the option to start with a Lead Acid if you're on a budget, but can upgrade to lithium down the line if you like. It also means that you can replace the battery in a few years once its completed its life cycle, which isn't something you can do with sealed power stations/portable power units.
This battery box also has a BMS (Battery Management System) which helps manage the charge running into your battery for optimal health, makes it easy to run loads with the multiple built-in output terminals, and can be set up as either a portable option or a built in dual battery system for your vehicle.
Do I need additional cables or charging accessories to charge from my car? I am awaiting delivery of my new 2022 Toyota Prado and was hoping i could stick a 100ah Lithium battery inside this and charge in my car while driving. As long as I unplug it from the cigarette socket when the engine is off is there any risk this will flatten my starter battery? Thanks
G'day Hamish,
This has an existing built in battery charge, so generally you won't need anything extra - however, if your new Prado has a smart alternator you'll need to invest in a DC to DC charger.
Can I plug my laptop in and use it as I would at home? Or do I need to charge the laptop using this product for a couple of hours and then unplug before using it?
G'day Dominic,
As long as the 240v output on the Engel Battery Box covers the input charge requirements of your laptop, there's no issues using your laptop whist its charging.
My Prado has a cabling that runs from the engine battery terminating in an Anderson plug in the rear. I understand charging from solar via the terminals bypasses the smart charger. Does it also bypass the smart charger using the anderson plug? And does that mean I would need a seperate DC-DC smart charger to utilise the anderson plug as a charger?
G'day Andrew,
Engel has addressed this one in the product manual which we have loaded as a PDF online, I encourage you to have a read through that for further info, but I'll pop the details below:
Q. Can I charge the battery using the external terminals or accessory sockets?
A. Yes you can as long as the main isolator switch is in the “on” position. This type of
charging is not controlled by the on-board microprocessor since the charge current will
flow direct to the battery via the main isolator switch. If an external voltage regulator is
not used there is a risk of overcharging and damaging the battery. Please also consider
the accessory sockets are fused at 10A so a current flow higher than this will blow
the fuse.
The accessory socket part isn't relevant, as you're talking about using the external Anderson terminal rated at 50A. You'll be needing a DC to DC charger, just make sure its compatible with your chosen battery chemistry.
Will this DC-DC charger work with the newer variable alternators in modern 4WDs?
G'day Paul,
Good question, Engel don't address charging with smart alternators in the product manual. I think the best bet will be to give Engel a buzz and double-check with their technical team, as it may depend on the make of the vehicle etc. You can reach them on 1300 302 653.
The product has a built in 7A DC/DC charger so is independent of the alternator output unlike units that rely on a VSR. A separate DC/DC charger will cost you 250 bucks or more. The unit also has a built in 300W inverter which would cost you more to buy separately again. Compared to bare bones boxes, these really are decent value for money.
Would a Lithium LifePO4 battery size 330.3 x 173 x 215mm fit in? It seams like the internal size mentioned in engels dimension is exact as 330mm. Just concerned that it wont have clearance between the battery and battery box wall. The exact battery I was considering to fit in is the Voltax (Green or blue) 12V 100ah lithium battery .
G'day Roy,
I've just had a squizz at our display battery box and double-checked on those measurements.
Essentially there are small ridges of plastic moulding inside the box, which prevents any battery from sitting right up again the external wall of the box.
The internal measurements listed are the size of the battery area, not the full length of the battery walls.
As long as your battery is no larger than the measurements you've stated, it should just fit inside the battery allowance.
Hope that helps.
Will it run a fridge freezer with a deep cycle battery to stay offgrid. Which size fridge freezer would be recommended? Is there a specific brand to run of it?
G'day Natalie,
Yes, the Smart Battery Box can be used to run a fridge/freezer offgrid, although you'll also need a way to keep the battery charged (solar is usually the best option). Generally, we recommend picking a fridge size that will suit your needs, for two people this will usually be about 30-50L capacity, for families, usually 40-80L capacity. We sell a wide range of sizes and brands, you can find them all here: https://www.snowys.com.au/portable-fridges
hi, can you run a 1000watt inverter from this to run a hair dryer??
G'day Tracy,
Unfortunately not, they have a 300W maximum, so you won't be able to attach a hairdryer. Hair Dryers, unfortunately, use a lot of power and aren't really suitable for portable off-grid power usage.
Can I connect a Solar panel/blanket to the anderson connector (via double adaptor) to charge the battery and also have another device connected to the double adaptor to receive (output) power from the battery box? What Solar Blanket would Snowys recommend with to use with this Battery Box? I would preferred to use the Anderson plug if possible. Thank you again
G'day Matthew,
There is just the 1 x Anderson Input/Output, and as far as we know you won't be able to use it for input and output with a double adapter, we'd recommend using the positive/negative terminals on the end to connect the solar panel if you're wanting to use Anderon for output. The Hard Korr Crocskin 200W Panel is a popular combination with this battery box.
Will the DCDC work to charge from a smart car alternator? Also, does it isolate?
G'day Alex,
Good question, Engel don't address charging with smart alternators in the product manual. I think the best bet will be to give Engel a buzz and double-check with their technical team, as it may depend on the make of the vehicle etc. You can reach them on 1300 302 653.
In terms of isolating - the 12V charger plugs directly into a 12V cigarette socket, so if your accessory sockets automatically turn off with the vehicle you should be ok, if not, then you'll be at risk of flattening your battery. Engel indicate that you can use these in a dual battery set up, and they can be set up to isolate, however they recommend getting an auto-electrician to wire this up.
Do i need to buy a DC-DC charger to charge from a vehicle to the battery box?
G'day Toni,
The battery box already has a DC-DC charger built into it, so there is no need to buy one.
To charge the battery, should the battery box screen be on or can it be turned off? And should you charge the battery 24/7 when not in use?
G'day Ethan,
Your battery box will need to be turned on in order to charge it. You can leave the battery box on charge, however, if you're not actively using it will just enter the float stage of the charge cycle.
Can you charge the battery through the 12v outlet.
G'day Pete,
Yes, the Battery Box is supplied with a 12V cigarette plug lead so you can charge from the 12v outlet in your vehicle.
Im looking at purchasing an X Cell 130ah LiFePO4 which has dimensions (W x D x H): 329 x 172 x 240mm. Your specs say internal dimensions height is 238mm... just wondering if 238 is the absolute max battery height or might the above battery fit?
G'day Kevin,
Unfortunately, we have no stock to go and measure to double-check this for you, however, the listed specifications have been provided by Engel and match their website too, so they should be accurate. I think you might struggle to fit the battery you're looking at as they're not overly forgiving. We'd be happy to measure for you when they're back in stock, however giving the degree of margin you're looking at I'm not sure we could give an accurate measure down that small sorry.
Love that you can just charge this via cigarette socket.. but assuming it must be extremely slow. Do you have any numbers around the charge this produces? Also curious about whats involved in connecting it directly to 12v in the car.
G'day Andrew,
There aren't any specific numbers provided by Engel on the charge time via 12V DC as there are a few variables. Best bet will be to have a look through the Instruction Manual (available for download at the bottom of the specifications section). The inbuilt smart charger cycles through a range of stages to optimise charge performance, so you could be looking at a few hours, to a few days, depending on how much you're running your engine, and how depleted the battery is. If you're wanting to wire the unit as a second battery option Engel suggests discussing this with an auto-electrician.
Im planning to buy 140Ah(or more) LiFePO4 battery.just wondering if this will be compatible with the Engel Smart box?
G'day Andrew,
Your best bet will be to double-check the instruction manual that you can download at the bottom of the specifications section to check battery size, but yes, you should be able to fit a maximum 140Ah LiFePO4.
Does a standard cigarette plug fit directly into the engel posi fit socket? Or is there a plug that can convert to standard cig socket? As i would have no use for posi fit socket otherwise.
The Posi-Fit plug is specific to Engel, Wade. You can probably make up something that will convert it to a standard cig socket, although a more secure way about it would be to convert the cig socket to a Posi-fit. You'll probably need to search around some electronics and 12V shops to find the bits you need though.
Ive heard some DCDC chargers have an issue with cars running a smart alternator. Is this the case with this Engel box?
G'day James,
Good question, it's not something that Engel address in the product manual. I think the best bet will be to give Engel a buzz and double check with their technical team, as it may depend on the make of the vehicle etc. You can reach them on 1300 302 653.
I have an 80 and a 98 battery. Would they b ok to use or do I need a higher battery.
G'day Darrell,
The Smart Battery Box can be used with batteries from 60Ahr to 140Ahr. So you shouldn't have a problem with your 80Ahr or 98Ahr battery.
How do you jump start a flat battery in a car? Do you just attach the jumper leads to the Engel battery on the side, then to the car and start the car? I can't find any detailed information on this process. Thanks.
G'day Peter,
Great question, you can use the battery box to jump-start a car, there are a few things to consider. If you use a cold cranking battery in the box you can just connect it and then start the engine. If you use a deep cycle battery in the box then you'll need to connect it for an hour to charge and then start the engine. On the left hand end under the little hatch there are standard battery terminals you can connect your jumper leads to.
The input power sources do not mention solar input.
G'day Rod,
The Engel Smart Battery Box can be connected to solar by an Anderson plug, the battery box does not have its own regulator so your solar panel would need to have its own regulator in-line. You can find the Anderson plug outlet on the side of the unit.
Hope the question makes sense.
G'day Jez,
The Engel Battery Box is not internally regulated for solar. An external Lifepo Lithium regulator is required.
Hi guys, would there be any major issues putting in a 145ah battery? I know it says “up to 130ah”.
G'day Joe,
I've not been able to get a direct answer from Engel however everything in their User Manual stipulates they are only compatible with batteries up to 140AHr so unfortunately, I don't think it's going to be compatible with your 145Ah battery.
We have Dometic fridge and lights both with normal 12v cig sockets, wanting to use both at same time, is there an adapter to do this for the Engel posi fit plug? Thanks
G'day Casey,
If your fridge and lights both have a normal 12V cig-plug you could grab yourself a double cig-plug adapter from somewhere like Jaycar, this should be fine as long as you don't exceed the limit of the adapter (usually around 10AMP). Alternately you could grab an Anderson to 12V cig adapter and run one of them from that output.
If not, what do you suggest?
G'day Lyn,
The Engel Smart Battery Box Series 2 is just an inverter box so doesn't actually have an internal battery, you would need to purchase a deep cycle battery separately to use in the unit. If you're needing to run a 12V fan while away from your vehicle then you could grab a CoolPower RAPS44 Power Pack, Goal Zero Yeti 150 or Companion Power Pack 44Ah depending on how many amps your fan draws and how long you'd like to run it for.
Hi, im planning on using this box as a tempory measure until I get a dual battery set up in my 4wd, with a roof mounted solar panel. so I was wondering if this box can be charged through the built in charger at the same time as being charged through a solar panel? So i can have it plugged in to charge when the cars running and have it charge through solar when the cars off, but there will be a time where the 2 power sources overlap. Cheers.
G'day Adrian,
Providing you have a regulator or charge controller on the solar panel, you should have no issues charging simultaneously.
Hi what is the largest sized solar panel you can use with the battery box.
G'day Annette,
You can use as large a sized solar panel as you like with the Engel Smart Battery Box Series 2, as long as the solar panel has an inbuilt charge controller, which most will have these days. Hope that helps.
Is the cord to charge from the vehicles 12v included?
G'dau Greig,
I've just double checked this and I can confirm that the Smart Battery Box Series 2 comes with a 12v and 240v cable.
Is it possible to run a charge cycle at the same as a discharge cycle. For example running the fridge plugged into the battery box and charging via solar or 12volt plug in my car?
G'day Billy-Ray,
Yes, you absolutely can charge and discharge at the same time. Its really important to note though, if charging your Engle Smart Battery Box Series 2 with solar panels, the charge goes directly to the battery and NOT through the Smart System. In this case, you will need to use any solar system with a regulator.
I want to charge my Giant e-bike while camping. It is normally charged with the charger plugged into a 240volt wall socket
G'day Darren,
The maximum continuous power the Smart Battery Box can tolerate 300 watts, with a spike output power of 900W. So in short, no you won't be able to charge a 400-watt hour lithium bike battery with this unit.
Can you remove the dedicated Engel 12v plug and replace it will a standard cigarette 12v input?
G'day Steve,
There is both a standard cigarette style 12V plug and an Engel 12V socket, so there won't be any need to replace or remove any of the ports.
Does this have caprbility to plug Solar panels into it?
G'day John,
Yes, you can charge the Engel Smart Battery Box Series 2 using a solar panel. You'll just need to make sure your solar panel has a regulator and can connect via an Anderson plug.
Will it properly charge a lithium battery as I was told I need a different charger to agm/lead acid? Thanks
G'day Tom,
We've double checked with Engel, and the Smart Battery Box Series 2 can be used with LiFePO4 batteries. The lead supplied will be able to charge all battery types used in the unit.
Does this product protect the battery from Overcharging when using the solar function?
G'day Steve,
I've just consulted the tech experts and the Engel Smart Battery Box Series 2 doesn't have an overcharging protection mechanism so you'll need to use it with a solar regulator. Most Solar Panels have these inbuilt and attached to the back of the panel.
A great unit, but what battery should I buy for it?
G'day Jeff,
Engel
For Lead acid batteries, Is this externally vented, or can I have it safely in the cargo section of my wagon.
G'day Alex,
Sorry mate but I'm not entirely sure I know what you mean by externally vented or sealed? I've run it past a few of the staff and I think we'd prefer you gave us a call just so we can clarify what you're after to get you the right answer. Feel free to get in touch on 1300 914 007.
the large round RED thing near the power input is a vent.
if my battery was completely flat, how long would it take to fully charge it connected to the cigarette socket while driving?
G'day Patrick,
It would depend on which battery you put into the Engel Smart Battery Box Series 2. A lead acid battery with
I intend to charge via Anderson Plug from the alternator.
G'day Colin,
I've given Engel a buzz to suss this out for you. They told me that the Smart Battery Box Series 2 just has the one Anderson outlet that you can use to both charge or run things from your battery but being only one outlet, you can't do both at the same time. It also doesn't come with a low voltage cut out, so will run your battery dry if you're not careful.
Is this the same or is there any difference between them
G'day Justin,
We don't stock the ArkPak 730 but having just done some research online, I reckon they are exactly identical in their functionality to the Engel Smart Battery Box Series 2.
G'day Paul,
We're not entirely sure what you mean by BCDC charger, but the Smart Battery Box can be charged via 240V mains power (adaptor included) from a vehicle's DC socket (cord included) and on 12 or 24 volt DC.
I hope this answers your query, but if not then please feel free to give our customer service team a buzz on 1300 914 007 and they'll be happy to help.
Pure sine inverter? Mppt controller?
G'day Roland,
The Engel Smart Battery Box Series 2 has a modified sine inverter and doesn't use an MPPT controller, no.
