Designed around Oztent’s legendary 30-second tent, but with the addition of another room for extra space, the RX-5 is ideal for families who love adventure.
This tent is constructed from the Oztent new ModCan material which is completely waterproof, UV resistant, and CPAI-84 flame retardant so it’ll stand up to use in the harsh Aussie climate. The complete panel system and zip in entry floor combine to create a second weather protected room, so the RX-5 has one room for living and one for sleeping in.
The main room of this tent has a skylight that can be zipped open to expose no-see-um mesh which keeps out insects while providing a great view of the stars. The RX-5 also comes with a fly which will help reduce condensation in the cold and keeps the tent cool when it's hot.
If you’re after a tough, weatherproof and easy to pitch
What are the real world packed dimensions, as I brought the rs2 the other day , website states 197 cm (L) x 65cm (W) x 30cm (H) But in reality it’s actually it’s 156cm long about 60 wide I’m hoping the rx5 is also smaller and thinner. Can you please find out for me? I’ve only got a certain amount of cm left of space on the roof rack when I have my pod on. Question number 2. Can you take gear out the main bag to thin it out too? Thanks Ryan
G'day Ryan,
I'm not familiar with an RS2 sorry, so cant review packed dimensions vs real life there.
RX5 packed size is limited by the frame, and the accessories are packed separately. Realistically there's not a huge amount you can do to make the tent pack size smaller.
Is it possible to use the front room without connecting the floor?
G'day Raina,
Yep, absolutely. The front room floor just zips onto the wall panels, so if you don't want to use it just leave it in the bag.
As its a bucket floor, the walls will be a bit short without it - that's easily offset by dropping the awning poles down until you're happy with the wall height.
Does the living room have to be attached to the sleep tent or can you set up an awning and attach in the other side?
G'day Katie,
The living room must be connected to the front of the tent, and there's only one way to set it up. There are no attachments on the sides of the tent to make any other configuration possible.
Hello, does Oztent make an awning I can attach to the ‘living room’ and then add walls if there is rain - I am trying to combat the need for a marquee to cook and eat under as I do not want this to be in the living room and smell out or damage the tent.
G'day Katie,
Currently, the RX tent and panels system is designed as a standalone, complete set and there aren't any extras available. No attachment will work to extend the living room of the RX-5 at the moment.
Can you join the RV4 and RX5 plus the living room
G'day Danae,
No, you are unable to connect the RV and RX tents, the RX range has been designed as a stand-alone tent with it's own built-in living room. Unfortunately due to the zip configuration, there is no way to connect them to a tent from the RV range.
Can the rv 5 awning extension or rv5 side extensions be used on the RX when the front room is not in use?
G'day Matthew,
It can't be, sorry. The RV accessories are not compatible with the RX system due to differing zips and configurations. The RX tent and panels system is designed as a standalone, complete set.
Hi team, Which length of pole is the best for front panel to use as awning?
G'day Emre,
Check out the You Might Also like section for a link to recommended Oztent awning poles - otherwise the Supa Peg Aluminium Tent Poles in the 230cm size will be a good alternative.
Looking to buy a Oz tent Rx5 for camping. 2 adults and 2 kids. Can you fit x2 queen camper stretchers next to eachother inside the tent?
G'day Chad,
Whilst you may be able to fit 2 x queen camp mats in, depending on the brand, you're not able to fit 2 x queen stretchers due to the taper of the wall and the amount of space you lose at stretcher height.
If you are wanting to fit 4-5 people in the main tent, the only way to do this is with camp mats on the floor, or potentially low rise stretchers. Whilst we haven't tried it out in real life, measurements suggest you'd just be able to fit 2 x low-rise stretchers in.
Hi team, I'm pretty keen on this tent as a requirement for us is to have a tent with a screened room/living space with a floor that mostly sealed. We're only 'once every couple of month' campers so this is likely overkill but the durability/comfort/features is a plus. A bit hesitant on the cost however we intend to buy and take care of the tent so it lasts decades. I've had a look around at other tents just to compare and it seems many offer the front and side panels for an awning but no floor. Is the RX-5 the only one available with the floor that connects to the main tent and has high durability? Cheers! Steve
G'day Steve,
Yes, the RX-5 is pretty much the only higher durability option (canvas), that has a built-in/zip-in floor currently on the market.
The Blackwolf Turbo Tents have side and front panels, but no built in floor. You can add a screen room to the front awning of the Turbo Tent range, however you do end up with a bit more in the way of bags to carry, and set up time.
Hopefully this helps the decision making!
Does this tent material need to be seasoned before use per standard canvas tents?
G'day Andrew,
There shouldnt' be any need to season the RX5 tent, they come fully seam sealed and with a waterproof internal coating.
Hope that helps!
Material
G'day Chris,
No, it's not. The RX series is made with an exclusive modified canvas. The RS-1 is made of basically the same kind of canvas as the RV series.
Hope that helps.
Hi, We are looking at an RX5 but would like to fit 2x Black Wolf or Zempire double size mat sin the tent side by side. Measurements say they will and be wall to wall wide but wondering if it is realistic and if condensation will be an issue. Just wondering if you have tried this to confirm they fit.
G'day Brendan,
The internal measurement between the frame on the sides is actually 2.55m. It is common to have 2 x double mat combos in the RV5 though, including mats around the 1.3-4m mark, so just be aware there will be a few cm on the center of the outer edge of each mat the will get a bit pushed in.
This can also be significantly improved with the tent pegged out and tensioned well.
Hi, can this be connected to an RV5?
No, the zips run in opposite directions to the RV5 which means the accessories for one dont work for the other.
Hi, we have 2 x king single double height blow up beds 191cm x 97cm x 46cm (effectively making a king size bed), will this fit in the main tent with the tapering at the back?
G'day Amanda,
You'll be fine with two double-height inflatable beds with the dimensions you've indicated. There is enough extra depth in the rear of the tent to account for the height of your mattresses.
Can the awning be setup without the peak, ie; as one long straight awning? Thanks
G'day Anthony,
Yes, you can set up the RX-5 Tent with the awning in a flat configuration. In this configuration, you just won't be able to attach the front panel system.
Hi there, is the RX5 canvas mould resistance?
G'day Van,
Oztents ModCan fabric used in their RX series is waterproof, windproof, mould resistant & flame resistant.
Hope that helps.
Can I use an RV5 caravan connector on the RX5 if I don't attach the front room annexe sides to the tent awning i.e. use the awning zip for the connector rather than for the front room sides?
G'day Sue,
We've had this question before and received the following info from Oztent:
The Oztent RV Caravan & Sail Track Connector is not compatible with the RX Tent.
As the RX is a stand-alone model and is separate from the RV series, it has different zip configurations.
Unfortunately, there is no sail track connector available for the RX tents.
Is the material on the RX-5 as durable as the material on the RV-5?
G'day John,
Yep, absolutely. Apart from being a different colour and having a different fiber composition, side by side it's hard to pick which one is better. They're both the same thickness, both ripstop & both very strong.
Hope that helps.
Gday guys, Would you recommend this tent for a family of 4, kids 2 and 4. Im struggling figuring out dimensions to fit either air mattresses, stretchers or bunk stretchers. Im tossing up between this or 2 RV5s with wall accessory's. The two rv5 option starts to add up in cost pretty quick!
G'day Matt,
An RX5 tent is a good option for families of 4 if you've got young kids. Generally, 3 single mattresses or two singles and a double will give the best sleep space options. Once the kids are older than around 5, we'd generally recommend 2 RV5s, that way you can set up the kids in one, and the adults in the other, connecting the front awnings to each other.
Am I likely to be able to set-up this tent solo? I’m a 5’2” female, but have a bit of oomph behind me. (Just not quite as much as a 6’ guy.) Thank-you!
G'day Jo,
I've you've got a bit of grit I cant see why not, although you may have some challenges on the first few goes until you work out a set up process thats right for you.
The tent itself should be no worries, but the peaked panel system my be a bit tricky. I think you're best chance of success would be to zip the walls and roof before putting the peak poles up to their full height.
If you have a hardy step in your kit like this one to give you a leg up, that would also be beneficial!
Hey Snowys What size tarp ground sheet would we need for this tent?
Hi - just wondering if you can recommend a waterproof bag for the RX-5 ?Having read the Comments re a long tour thinking we may need to invest in an additional bag.
G'day Elizabeth,
The Oztent RV Pro Travel Case is the best bet, it's not officially 'waterproof' like a tent would be, but it is designed for full weather protection whilst on the roof rack!
Its compatible with all Oztent RV, RX, SV and RV Lite tents.
We live in Queensland, Do you have this tent set up at the Brendale store?
G'day Crystal,
We don't currently have an RX-5 on display at our Brendale store, but we do have an RV-4 on display, which should give you a pretty good idea of the size and layout of the tent.
Is the standard floor saver from Oztent compatible with the RX-5 tent
G'day Bernard,
Absolutely, that particular size is compatible with RV5/RV5 Plus/RX5 tents.
Hope that helps!
Are the side and front panels of the RX-5 all one piece with the floor being separate or is each panel separate like the RV5 JV special edition?
G'day Stu,
Yes, the RX-5 front panel is one large modular panel that wraps around the entire front of the tent, so it's a little different to the RV panels that fit individual sides.
Are you able to add any front awning to the second room ? I know its possible with the Rv series.
G'day Kalvin,
No, the Oztent RX 4 and 5 do not hav an additional zip on the front end of the awning, meaning only the front wall can be attached.
The front wall has been designed to have a single canvas flap which can set up as am awning to account for this.
Is the RX-5 able to easily attach to a Foxwing?
G'day Jem,
Unfortunately, you're not able to connect the RX5 to the Foxwing awning due to the zipper configuration for the front modular living room of the RX-5.
Is the carry bag waterproof?
G'day John,
The Carry Bag isn't waterproof, however, it is somewhat water-resistant so it will probably be ok in light showers, but not in continual rain.
Hi We are a family of 5 considering buying an rx5 tent. Would it be possible to fit 5 stretchers in the tent assuming we used both the main tent and the enclosed room? Would you have any suggestions as to the best models and configuration to buy? Would it be essential to get one of them as the OZtrail bunk?
G'day Simon,
You'll struggle to fit five stretchers in the RX-5. The rear section of the tent will really only fit two stretchers in side by side, with a space down the middle, due to the pitch of the back of the tent. If you used a double bunk in the living room section of the tent, as well as a smaller stretcher then you could possibly fit all 5 of you, but it won't really be a comfortable fit. We tend to find that families of 5 are better suited to getting 2 x RV5 tents, connecting their awnings, and then using side panels to enclose a large central living space.
We have an RV3 with front/side walls and wondering if this can connect to the RX5 in any way?
G'day Casey,
Unfortunately not, the RX range has been designed as a stand-alone tent with it's own built-in living room. Unfortuantely due to the zip configuration, there is no way to connect them to a tent from the RV range.
Was thinking about making up a waterproof bucket floor for the front room of our rv5... but thought the floor off the rx5 may fit with some velcro or other attachments added. Instead of needing to make one up from scratch myself. Can it be purchased on it's own? Thanks.
G'day Renee,
I've had a look at Oztent's website and the Rx-5 is only available to purchase as a package. They haven't made the front section or floor available to purchase separately.
The rear has a fly, but the front doesn't. What about condensation?
G'day Scott,
The main purpose of the fly is to reduce condensation, so it covers the rear section which is designed to be used as the bedroom. The front section is designed as a living space, so generally won't be in use overnight when condensation occurs. The ModCan Canvas is waterproof and has a 2000mm Waterhead rating.
Is it possible to join 2 RX-5 packages together (using the Awning Connectors?) zipped facing one another along the front, to make 4 rooms, two central livings rooms joined together, the 2 bedrooms on each end?
G'day PJM,
Unfortunately not, the RX-5 hasn't been designed to connect to other RX or RV tents. The zip trackers don't match up, so they're just designed to be used by themselves. If you're wanting to connect two tents to each other then the RV-5s might be a slightly better option for your needs.
Can I use the mesh floor for RV5 under RVX?
G'day Juls,
Yes, the RV5/RX5 floor is designed to fit both the RV5 and RX5 tents.
For a family of 4, is it possible to use the enclosed front awning as a separate bedroom to separate the kids? Or is a Turbo 450 better for this?
G'day Dan,
Yes, you can use the front room of the RX-5 as a second bedroom as it has a zip in tub floor. The Turbo 450 might give you a little more flexibility, but both options are good.
Repair patches included but no adhesive. What is the best adhesive to use? Or can a product like Tear-Aid be used
G'day Sam,
The Tear Aid Type A Fabric Repair Tape will do the trick no problems, just put tape on the inside and the outside of the tent like a sandwich. Alternatively if you're loving the repair patches just grab yourself some Gear Aid Seam Grip WP Sealer & Adhesive, that will see you right.
Hi, If you set up the tent without the front room (like the rv) is the tent still waterproof? Just wondering mainly about the doors Cheers
G'day Pat,
Yes, you can set up the RX-5 without attaching the front living room space. The front awning is part of the tent (like the RV) and can be left rolled up or pegged out flat for a quick set up.
I already own two king goanna stretchers can you tell me if they will comfortably fit in the rx5 (and or rx4) sleeping compartment?
G'day Jonathan,
You can fit two king goanna stretchers in the RX5, if you head over to the RV5 product page and have a look at the features video (5:00 min mark) Ben pops a couple of these stretchers in the RV5 (same sleeping size space as the RX5). That will give you a good idea of how they'll fit with the sloped rear section of the tent. Unfortunately they're a little long to comfortable fit in the RX4.
Hi Could I ask which component makes this material fire resistant,if component is chemical could the i please know which chemical ?
G'day Ash,
I've called Oztent to clarify and they've indicated that the ModCan Canvas isn't treated with a chemical to make it flame retardant. They indicated that the fabric itself has been designed to stop the spread of fire if an ember/spark was to fall on the tent.
Just wondering if the storage bag will withstand rain during the drive to the campsite if stowed on the car roof? It's too long to go in most vehicles.
G'day Chris,
Technically the bag isn't completely waterproof, but it will keep most water out, just maybe not torrential rain. Most of our customers store them on the roof and haven't reported any troubles.
rx 5 tent
G'day Matte,
The RX-5 comes with enough poles to peak the front awning, but if you're wanting to open up the extra awning on the front wall you'll need to grab another set of Alloy Poles
You can use the tent without the front room attached like you can with the rv5 yeah? I figure you can but just wanted to make sure it's stable and fine without setting the entire thing up for overnighters
G'day Dave,
I've had a chat to Oztent and they have assured me the tent can be used without the front panel system. It won't affect the structural integrity in any way!
Rx5
G'day Clinton,
There won't be space to pack the from panel system and floor in the same bag as the RX-5. There is a separate bag for the extra accessories that is much smaller so could be packed in a vehicle rather than a roof rack.
Does this tent come with the fly as shown in the pictures
G'day Jodie,
Yes, the Rx-5 is a full package deal and includes the fly, tent, tub floor and complete panel system.
One of the replies mentions that the tagalong and awning connector will fit without the RX panel system attached. If this is the case, will the rv 5 deluxe side panels fit at the same time to obtain a 3 room tent. obviously without the zipped in floor from the rx.
G'day Daniel,
Unfortunately, the Oztent RX-5 and RV5 Tents have their zippers running in opposite directions, so you can't mix and match the accessories between the two.
Can a RV5 tag along be connected to the RX5? If so, also while the room is enclosed?
G'day Reid,
I've just had a chat with the folks at Oztent and they told me that unfortunately it wouldn't work as the RX-5 and RV5 Touring Tents have their zips running in opposite directions. That will mean that the Tagalong won't be able to zip on to the RX-5.
Can the RX5 fly be used on the RV5?
G'day Tom,
You'll have no worries at all using the fly from the Oztent RX-5 Tent with your RV5, they're essentially the same size and shape as each other.
If so are these rooms an avaialble extra?
G'day Beth,
The zippers on the Oztent RX-5 Touring Tent are different to the RV5. So you can't use an RX front room on an RV, unfortunately.
I have seen a review online (drifta) that suggests the standard Oztent poles are not long/strong enough resulting in the awning being too low or sagging. Is this the case? Does the RX 5 come with the 2 x larger poles that allow the pitch in the awning? Does it come with a crossbar?
G'day Matt,
This isn't feedback that we've received at all about the Oztent RX-5 Touring Tent but that's not to say that other's haven't had that experience. The RX-5 does come with taller poles that allow you to pitch your awning, they also come with a crossbar too.
To the rx5
G'day Norman,
Becuase the Oztent RX-5 Touring Tent is built on the base of the RV5, it's got similar features and can have side awnings attached just like the RV5 can.
We've had to come back and correct ourselves here sorry.
The latest information from Oztent is that the only RV accessory that is compatible with the RX Tents whilst the panel system is attached is the mesh floor saver. The Awning Connectors and Tagalong Tents can also be attached, but the panel system will need to be removed in order for this to work.
Apologies for any confusion.
This is shown at $2199 marked down to $1879 and "$300 Cash Back". Is the $300 Cash Back additional to this discount, claimed by redemption from OzTent directly? Or are you just referring to the discounted price?
G'day Michael,
Sorry for the confusion. We're not taking into account the Oztent money back promo with our pricing. So you can buy your RX-5 Touring Tent at the discounted price and then get a further $300 back from Oztent by claiming it back from them.
Is the canvas more durable on Rv 5 than RX5
G'day Alison,
Both the original Oztent 8Oz canvas and their new Modcan material are hardwearing and reliable fabrics. However, according to Oztent the Modcan material actually has more mass than their 8 Oz canvas. It also has double the tensile strength, is more water resistant, has twice the UPF rating, and is fire retardant.
If we had to nitpick a potential downside to the newer Modcan material, it would be that as it is a synthetic it may be a little less breathable in warmer weather, but we are yet to get feedback on this and have no other reason to recommend one fabric over the other.
Can the RX5 connect canopy to canopy with another RX5 the same as the RV5 does?
Unfortunately, the RX zippers run on opposite directions to the RV tents, so you can't join two RX tents together, nor can you join an RX with an RV tent.
Hi Guys- I was wondering if this tent was setup and on display in your Brendale store? be good to see it before purchase.
G'day Rick,
We've currently got an Oztent RX-4 Touring Tent on display in Brendale but not the RX-5. You should get a pretty good idea of the tent by looking at the smaller size. If you'd like to see the RX-5 or any other tent setup, please give us a buzz and we will see if we can get it up for you before you come into the store.
What groundsheet would you recommend I order with this tent? I’m tempted to pick this up along with a groundsheet...
G'day Gavin,
The Oztent RV Mesh Floor Savers are designed to fit both the RV & the RX Touring Tent ranges. Just grab the RV5 model and you'll be laughing!https://www.snowys.com.au/rv-mesh-floor-savers
When the tent is packed up due to the size it will most likely be packed on the roof rack, is the tent bags that you pack the tebt into waterproof, dustproof and uv protected? (Will it deteriorate being left on a roofrack for a period of time?)
G'day Nathan,
The bag that comes with the Oztent RX-5 Touring Tent is a material that isn't dust or waterproof. I'd suggest that it probably wouldn't say a lengthy amount of time on the roof if you were going touring for a long time.
What is the exact length when packed? The oztent website site says 209cm? Cheers!
G'day Nathan,
I've just checked the main tent bag and the measurement comes out at 209cm, so I'll get that updated on our listing now.
