If a clear view of the sky is needed in order for this to work, will it be effective in bushland? I often can't see a lot of sky when I'm out!
G'day Lisa,
PLB units work best when they are activated in a clear and open area, so the general recommendation from the Australian Maritime Safety Authority is to try and position the unit at the highest point you can with the best view of the sky you can get.
I am planing a hike through the desert. I'd like to know how small of a search area these will create if worst comes to worst?
G'day Samuel,
The KTI Safety Alert PLB has a GPS accuracy of 3 metres. All PLBs are monitored by the COSPAS-SARSAT system so you can be sure that a search and rescue team will do their best to find you as soon as they can.
I hear that a few of these devices you have to pay a year long subscription and it can cost hundreds. Is this the case with this one as well.
G'day Bev,
There is no yearly subscription fees for the KTI Safety Alert PLB or any of the PLB units we sell. There is a device called the spot that has an annual fee, however, technically these are not a PLB. The only thing you'll need to do is register the unit with the Australian Maritime Safety Authority which is free.
.
G'day Peter,
No, you dont. It does need to be registered with AMSA, but that is free. The only after purchase cost is for the battery replacement, due every 10 years, or after PLB activation. Your best bet would be to get in contact with KTI directly to find out the standard cost for battery replacement. Otherwise check out AMSA Beacon Info and more indepth KTI specifications. Hope that helps!
A
G'day Matt,
Yes it will! You'll need to register your beacon and travel plans with AMSA (Australian Maritime Safety Authority) before leaving.
After it has been used once, can it be used again. Or does it then require a new battery?
G'day William,
Yes the KTI Safety Alert PLB is a single-use item, if the PLB is activated in an emergency then the battery will need to be replaced by KTI.
Can I register my beacon in another country?
G'day Dan,
If you're planning to relocate to New Zealand KTI can recode your PLB for you, they suggest doing this before you leave the country. You can get in contact with them via their website: http://kti.com.au/
N.B. If you're relocating to a country other than New Zealand KTI might be able to help you, but we'd suggest contacting them directly for all the information you'll need.
.
G'day Dan,
The KTI Safety Alert PLB currently comes with an armband and a neoprene case. We are about to run out of the armbands though and once they're gone they will no longer be supplied. Best bet will be to jump on and order one now.
Travelling overseas with a few different airlines. All have a requirement based on the "lithium metal content" of the battery. Is there any info available on the lithium content of this device? e.g. Qantas base it on less than 2g or 2g to 8g or anything over 8g restricted
G'day Troy,
Thanks for getting in touch, the best place to check these requirements is with someone like the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA), as it's usually the security team within the airport who make the final decision rather than the airline. I can confirm that we've not had any reports of not being able to carry these on board, and a few members of our team have definitely travelled with PLB's in their carry on. The best option will be to treat it like a phone, tablet or small laptop and pop it in the separate tray when you go through security.
Also would a purchase currently include the armband accessory?
G'day Terry,
The KTI Safety Alert PLB has an IPX67 rating which means it is submersible to 3m for 1 hour. We currently have the armbands available so the unit would come with this.
Please see above - have unstable inoperable brain aneurysms
G'day Samantha,
Thanks for getting in touch, sorry to hear about your medical condition. The PLB units are designed to only work outside as they need a clear view of the sky. I think the best option will be to investigate getting a panic alert button, I've heard they are very effective.
Would like to know the expiry date on the battery.
G'day Bernadette,
I've just double checked our current stock and the battery expiry is January 2030.
Hi - Can i please confirm battery life on current stock. Previous question is 12 months old. thanks
Gday Emma,
We sell enough of these that we always have very recent stock ready to send out. The models we currently have for sale on our shop floor have an expiry of December 2029, so almost a full year over and above the quoted 10-year battery life. Stock in our warehouse would have come from a similarly dated batch, I just can't physically check it, but it was received around the same time as our shop stock.
Are these units allowed in carry-on luggage on the plane or do they need to be checked in?
G'day LK,
All indications are that it is fine to carry your KTI Safety Alert PLB in your carry on luggage, but it's always best to double check with the airline you're travelling on just in case they don't allow it.
I see the question has beeb asked 12 months ago just checking iffer is still current.
G'day Jodi,
The KTI Safety Alert PLB currently comes with the bonus armband but we are about to run out of these and then they won't be available. To be sure you get one just give us a call once you place your order.
Thanks
G'day Janine,
For any serving or replacements on the KTI Safety Alert PLB, you do need to back to KTI, who are based in Melbourne. You can suss out their website here.
Does this PLB have approval for use in US, Canada and Japan
G'day Erin,
You'll have no worries using the KTI Safety Alert PLB overseas in general but specifically in the US, Canada and Japan. Just make sure that you register your beacon with the relevant authorities before you leave.
Just confirming that this model doesn't have an antenna that you need to pull out or anything. I want my son (5yo) to be able to use it if necessary, so simplicity is a must.
G'day Simon,
The KTI Safety Alert PLB does have an antenna that you'd need to pull up to activate. It's really easy to pull up though as it simply unclips at the top of the PLB and then unwraps itself from around the PLB. I would have no concerns with my 5-year-old daughter being able to get the antenna out with ease.
What battery expiry date are on the current units in stock
G'day Kevin,
The expiry date on current stock is January 2029 - which is as up to date as it can possibly be at this point in time.
The details refer to a BONUS Armband however it is not included in the photos. Is the Armband included in the price?
G'day Phillip,
Yes, the KTI Safety Alert PLB will come with a bonus armband that is included in your purchase price.
When the battery needs to be replaced can you do it your self? If the alarm is set off do you then need to replace the battery? What price are replacement batteries?
G'day Henery,
The KTI Safety Alert PLB is fitted with special lithium batteries and it is not possible to replace batteries in the field or at home.
Battery replacement and servicing of the beacon is carried out by the manufacturer (Kinetic Technology International Pty. Ltd) or an agent delegated by them. However, unless the beacon has been activated, battery replacement should only occur at ten-yearly intervals.
Once activated, any PLB battery must be replaced.
We don't sell replacement batteries, as this needs to go through Kinetic Technology International Pty. Ltd so I'm not sure about the exact pricing. This is to ensure everything is done correctly so that the PLB performs when you need it to.
Will this work in New Zealand . If so does it need altering,
G'day Graeme,
The KTI PLB uses the COSPAS-SARSAT satellite network which is an international search and rescue system and the unit is approved to be used in New Zealand. You will, however, need to register the device with New Zealand authorities which can be done here.
Update 5/4/19 - Just to clarify our previous response, if you're an Australian resident travelling in New Zealand there will be no need to register the beacon with NZ authorities. You'll just need to register the beacon with AMSA (Australian Maritime Safety Authority) and any activation in New Zealand (or any other country that allows PLB activation) will be a coordinated response between the two countries.
