Turn a deep cycle battery into a portable power station or create a simple dual battery set up for your touring adventures with the Heavy Duty Battery Box with Voltage Sensitive Relay (VSR) from Hard Korr.
This box is made from durable UL 94V-0 flammability compliant ABS plastic with a high-quality construction. It has multiple port types so that you can connect a range of devices that you might need which are all recessed to reduce the risk of damage. These include 12v outlets with 10A fuses, a dual USB outlet, four 50A Anderson-style outlets that can be used as outputs or inputs and a 175A Anderson-style outlet for us as a jump-starter. It’s suitable for a range of battery types which included AGM, Lithium, Wet, Gel and Calcium, and can handle batteries up to 330mm x 180mm x 240mm in size.
Charge it by plugging into one of the 50A Anderson-style ports, or directly from the vehicle’s crank battery using the VSR. You can also easily monitor the charge status and voltage by viewing the large digital display. Keep your essentials powered when you’re heading out to explore with the Heavy Duty Battery Box with Voltage Sensitive Relay from Hard Korr.
I have a camper trailer it has its own box on the outside of the trailer
Korr doesn't specify anything regarding the weatherproof properties of this battery box, Michael. I'd say it is best used in a protected space, given the LED display and manner in which the ports are situated, I wouldn't recommend installing this in a weather-exposed position.
Is this compatible in modern cars with a smart alternator when plugged in with the wiring kit
G'day Craig,
I've had a chat with the team at Korr, and they've indicated that it's a tricky question to answer as it is quite specific to the vehicle type, and whether or not it's a temperature compensating or variable voltage alternator. If you flick an email to us: service@snowys.com.au I can send through a handy document that might help you out.
Hi do sell the exact 240-12v charging cable require to allow charging of this battery box from a normal 240v wall socket? ...if so which one is it? Im confused..some thing with an Anderson plug on it?
G'day Jonathan,
There is no specific cable that Korr make to charge the battery box from a 240V wall socket. If you wanted to charge it via 240V you could charge the battery directly with a battery charger, or charge the battery in the box via an Anderson plug. Primarily this box is designed to be charged from your vehicle or solar panel.
Does the on off switch control the vrs? When I've got the fridge plugged in, the fridge has power in on or off position. Just wanting to know whether the switch is to let the battery charge or not charge. I have it connected to start battery via wiring harness from you guys.
G'day Adam,
I've just called Hard Korr and they've indicated that with the isolation with on the front of the box set to off all power in and out of the box will stop. If this is not the case, please give the team at Korr a buzz and they can talk you through it over the phone: 07 3801 8332
I want to add a BCDC charger to this can it be done?
G'day Bill,
I assume you're referring to using a DC-DC charger with the Battery Box to charge the unit from your main vehicle battery? If so, then yes you can use this a charge via one of the 50A Anderson ports. Or alternately you can use the Dual Battery Wiring Kit to connect it directly to your vehicle battery.
Is it necessary to install a circuit breaker on the positive line from starting battery - close to battery as any inbuilt breaker may only protect output connections?
G'day Mike,
To be honest I'm not 100% sure what you're asking here. If you're wanting to set this up as a dual battery system we'd suggest using the Dual Battery Wiring Kit that has a built-in fuse.
Can this be used as an input port i.e. charging
G'day Mike,
The 175 Amp Anderson Port is just an output plug that can be used to jump-start vehicles. It can't be used as an input port.
Can you charge this via a normal 12v cig lighter plug in a car?
G'day Aaron,
You won't be able to charge the battery box from a 12V cig plug. You'll either need to charge via a DC/DC charger, or via an Anderson cable.
Although it has a built in isolator, can you connect a DCDC charger in future to charge the battery with this setup/wiring?
G'day Mehesh,
Yes you can connect a DCDC charger to this battery box, you'll just need to use one of the ports that don't have the VSR (it is on one of the 50A Anderson ports).
Wiil the hard korr box fit a l330xw173xh222 battery
G'day Robert,
The maximum battery size is 33L x 18W x 24H cm, so we'd say based on this information your battery should just fit!
Will it be ok charging from a 280 watt itechworld solar blanket with its own regulator it will interfere with its vsr
G'day Robert,
Yes, you can charge the Battery Box via a solar blanket with its own regulator, you'll just need to connect it via one of the 50A Anderson ports. There is one port with a VSR if you're charging it from your cars crank battery, and three other 50A Anderson ports that are input or output, so plenty of options for charging.
What type of connection would the transformer need to the battery. Note some battery boxes come with an inbuilt 240 V charger but are more expensive.
G'day Rod,
We've double-checked with the experts at Korr and they've confirmed you can charge the battery box using a 240V charger via one of the Anderson ports. They are limited to 50A, so as long as the charger doesn't output more than that you'll have no problems at all.
I am no expert on electrical fit outs, but this looks like a promising and highlyuseful battery housing for my camper van, but I also want to be able to add solar to my electrical system.
G'day Fiona,
Yes, the Korr Heavy Duty Battery Box is designed to be used to store power generated by solar panels, there are inputs for 12V & 24V DC, as well as 50 amp Anderson inputs. Most portable solar panels will have one of these two types of output to connect them to the box. I'm not sure what type of camper van you've got, but it would be worth double-checking with the company you get panels from what their output power connection is.
Or is a normal car battery too weak? Thanks
G'day Wayne,
Thanks for your inquiry! I've had a chat with a colleague who is an expert in this area, he is quite sure you will be able to use a standard car battery in the Hard Korr Heavy Duty Battery Box with VSR. If you have any technical questions, feel free to call us on 1300 914 007.
