How do you remove the oven from the fire when using with coals in the lid? I used mine for the first time and the oven handles do not come together when the lid is on - making it impossible to use a lifter? Thanks
G'day Alan,
In this case Fire Gloves will be your best friend.
I love a good campfire cook up, and my fire gloves get a huge workout.
Hi, Would either the 10" or 12" Southern Metal Spinners Camp Oven sit on top of a Cobb Cooker without "falling in"? Thanks
G'day Lyn,
The 12" would be the best bet - the BBQ grill plate that sits comfortably ontop of the Cobb is 30cm. This would be the minimum diameter to be fully supported, and the 12" over is 30.5cm.
Should I use a strong detergent for initial treatment after arrival? The pan is coated in oil which doesn’t smell good so should I remove all factory oil before seasoning?
G'day Finn,
I didnt on my first SMS oven, and there was abit of a funky taste with it for a fair while after.
I stripped and reasoned my next ones, and that issue was solved, so yes - I'd say strip it back.
Bear in mind you'll need to put abit more effort into seasoning these than with Cast Iron ovens, but its 100% worth it.
We have a cast iron camp oven that is internally 250mmm at base, 290mm at top with an internal height of 120mm. Wanting to go for lighter oven option, I'm undecided about 10" or 12". Can you inform me of the internal height of each please to help me decide. We would mostly only be cooking for 2 or 4 but have been used to something that I think is wider at least than the 10".
G'day Kim,
Good question - we should have that info available on our website. I've just measured and the internal height for the 10" is 148mm & the 12" is 158mm.
Not a huge difference but hopefully enough to help you decide.
Cheers, Laine
Will the cast iron camp oven 2 quart fit with room for a tea towel?
G'day Andrew,
I've just tested this out in-store, and it fits easily - no dramas!
Will the 10” spun steel camp oven fit inside the 12” one?
G'day Stephen,
No, the Aussie Camp Ovens don't nest unfortunately!
I have recently bought my first spun steel camp oven and are having a difficult time removing the metallic taste. I have seasoned the oven numerous times, but cooking is still inedible. Any suggestions on what might be going on please?
G'day Kristy,
This is not uncommon for spun metal camp ovens as they are known to take significantly more breaking in than traditional cast iron.
I believe both of mine took a good couple of months of fairly consistent use before they were absolutely perfect.
Mind you though, I don't recall ever having an issue where food was inedible.
Have you thoroughly washed the camp over with detergent a few times? They come with a thin coating of oil from the factory to protect it from rusting prior to purchase, sometimes it can take a good clean and season several times.
I've also heard that food can taste abit off with spun steel when the camp oven has been too hot, as it heats up quite differently to cast iron and can cause any residual oils from seasoning to burn off and taint the food...the other question is what you're cooking in it?
If you are doing dampers and baking style, make sure the camp oven is completely free and dry of oil before cooking.
Ultimately, theyre an awesome campfire companion, but they can take abit of getting used to it you're not familiar with them!
Hi, Just wondering if you can use the Southern Metal Spinners Aussie 10" Camp Oven with Hillbilly CookStand Oven Ring?
G'day Jimmy,
Yep, the 10" SMS over will work with the Hillbilly Oven Ring, it will just sit a bit funny around the handle anchor points.
What are the dimensions of the 10" frying pan lid? In particular, what is the depth in comparison to the Dr Livingstone's Bedourie 10" frying pan lid?
G'day John,
The Southern Metal Spinners Aussie Camp Oven Lid, when used as a fry pan is 27.5cm in diameter and 4 cm deep.
The lid is used as a frypan remains in the normal lid position.
The Bedourie 10" Camp oven lid when used as a frypan is 26.5cm in diameter and 5 cm deep. The lid as a frypan has to be used upside down.
The camp oven came with instructions from the manufacturer and I para quote ‘ melt oil, coat bottom w wooden spoon, remove from heat, use paper towel to coat sides and then wipe off all excess oil, repeat if towel is very black’ . Is this enough as the Snowy’s blog on seasoning a camp oven is completely different being much more elaborate? I obviously want to get the best out of this purchase and hope you can respond to this.
G'day Agneta,
Seasoning your camp oven can be a very personal thing, and people will give you different opinions on what's best.
Ultimately, aside from the basics, it just comes down to trial and error and what you find works best for yourself over time.
Seasoning isn't a one-time thing, it's an ongoing maintenance process throughout the life of your camp oven, and rest assured, you cant really get it wrong. If it doesn't quite work the first time or is stuffed up, just try again! You won't damage your camp oven.
I personally follow the basics of the Snowys Blog post for my camp ovens, we also have a podcast on camp ovens which you can listen to HERE, which you may find helpful.
Will the 10" fit in a Cobb Cooker?
G'day Wendy,
No, the Aussie Camp Oven 10" won't fit inside the Cobb Cooker. We'd recommend sticking with the Cobb branded accessories.
Wondering if this can also be used as a pot on a gas stove to boil/ cook pasta etc?
G'day Dani,
Yes, you can use the Aussie Camp Oven on a gas stove, we'd recommend ensuring your stove has plenty of space as the camp ovens are quite large, and generally will be a little too large for your standard 2 burner style gas stoves with windshields.
Can you use on an induction cooktop?
G'day Rocky,
Thanks so much for your question!
I have a Southern Metal Spinners camp oven and can confirm they do not work on induction cooktops.
Why would this not work on induction? It’s steel, so should be no problem? Does a magnet stick to it? If yes, it should work. Or is there something different about these spun steel ovens?
Hi, will this rust and does it require oiling or seasoning also do they cook as well as cast iron. Thanks.
G'day Ben,
Yes, these camp ovens need to be oiled and seasoned in a similar way to cast iron, if the seasoning is washed off, and not re-oiled they will begin to rust fairly quickly. They cook as well as cast iron but are much lighter than cast iron.
Southern Metal Spinners Aussie Camp Oven Can use a steel wool sponge to clean this if food gets sticks on it or what’s the best way to clean this without scrapping the metal off?
G'day Jesse,
The Southern Metal Spinners camp oven needs to be seasoned before use like a normal cast iron camp oven. The spun steel does require abit more of the seasoning process than the cast iron does, and if not seasoned properly food will stick to it. I'd recommend given you oven a thorough clean, you can use steel wool if need be, but I'd probably opt to give it a soak and then hit it with a normal scourer. Once you've cleaned it you will need to start the seasoning process again.
What is the diameter of the pot itself? At the bottom and at the handles?
G'day Ido,
I've measure both sizes as I wasn't sure which size you were interested in. Internally the 10" is 23cm at the base, and 26.5cm at the top. Internally the 12" is 25.5 at the base, and 29.5cm at the top.
Hi, I'm looking at steel spun camp ovens and this one looks great for the versatility (i.e. lid as a fry pan etc). I'm just wondering if there is a smaller one (apart from the Hillbilly which was a bit pricey). It's just me and 2 small kids, plus we are vegetarian so won't be doing big meat roasts. We will more likely be doing stews and damper. Is the 10 inch one huge? Is there a smaller option (this or other brand)? I was looking at the cast iron 4.5 and 2 litre ones, but after reading some of the comments here I like the idea of steal spun.
G'day Bella,
The Aussie Camp Oven 10" is the smallest in the Aussie Camp oven range, but there is the 10" Bedourie which is also spun steel and can be used in the same way with the lid as a frypan but a little smaller with a 6.5L volume versus the Aussie 10" with a 9L volume. The Cast Iron 4.5 Quart will be slightly smaller at 4.3L but you won't have the flexible frypan lid option and they tend to be much heavier. Overall I'd say the 10" Bedourie might be the best bet for you and the two kids.
what are the pro's & cons of the Aussie Vs the Bedourie?
G'day Bluey,
Both the Southern Metal Spinners Aussie Camp Ovens and the Dr Livingstone's Bedouries are made in the same South Australian factory, so in terms of quality of workmanship and materials, they're on par. Any pro's & cons would really come down to design, and what you're looking for.
The Bedourie is a no fuss, simple camp oven, with a single interchangeable handle and a lid that doubles as a fry pan.
The Aussie Camp ovens come with a trivet, and whilst a different lid design, it can also be used as a fry pan. Both the lid and oven have their own fixed handles, so theres alot more going on when using as a single item. Having said that, it does make for quick and easy management of all components, when cooking over the fire.
We are new to camp oven cooking. Does it come with an instruction and recipe book ideas
G'day Jenneane,
The Camp Oven comes with instructions for seasoning your cookware, however you can head to Southern Metal Spinners YouTube channel for videos with cooking tips, recipes and more.
Will the 10" Bedourie Oven fit inside a 10" or 12" Aussie camp oven?
G'day Natalie,
I've just given this a whirl with our display models. The 10" Bedourie Oven fit inside the 10" Southern Metal Spinners Aussie Camp Oven but there wasn't room for the lid too. It fit both the oven and the lid inside the 12" though.
We’re camping at the moment and fellow campers have just shown us their camp oven. It’s 10†in diameter across the base and 11†in diameter across the top. Is this the 10†version then?
G'day Linda,
You're bang on there. The 10" version of the Southern Metal Spinners Aussie Camp Oven has a 10" base and pushes out to about 11" at the top.
Do the handles of the Aussie Camp Oven (both sizes) fold down to allow use in the Camp Oven Mate. I have the smaller version of the Camp Oven Mate and it would be an advantage to me if these units are compatable.
The Camp Oven Mate generally is suitable for a 9†quart camp oven. The handles of the 10†and 12†ovens do fold down, but the 10†is the only one that will fit in the Southern Metal Spinners Camp Oven Mate.
Hi Snowys, What oven bags do you have for the 12" and 10" Southern Metal Spinners camp ovens? Also, what pot lifters would suit this design of camp oven?
Hi Paul, so the Southern Metal Spinners don’t have carry bags specifically designed for them. However, I’ve tested a few out for you and the 10†and 12†both fit the 12†oven bag from Pioneer (Snowy’s code: 45265). The reason I’ve recommended that size for the 10†oven is the 9“ bags were a little too snug for the handles. Also in regards to your second question, the pot lifter that we recommend is the Camp Oven Lid Lifter from Campfire as it will suit most camp ovens (code: 36404).
