A heavy-duty tarp is essential for any outdoor setup, which is why you should keep an Ultrarig Heavy Duty Poly Tarp from OZtrail handy in your kit.
These tarpaulins are made from strong silver coated 1000 denier HDPE with triple-layer LDPE lamination on the top and bottom, and come in a range of sizes for different applications. They feature OZtrail’s UVtex technology which stabilises the material to block out UV rays and maximise insulation and strength. The perimeter is welded with 5mm rope reinforced edges for support, and multi-layer mega patch attachment points with HD webbing and marine-grade stainless-steel D-rings for securing it down.
The strong and multipurpose Ultrarig Heavy Duty Poly Tarp from OZtrail can be used at home, out camping or in your vehicle when you get yourself into a jam.

Hi, looking to buy a tarp to set up over my 900 Dusk to dawn swag for a single person space for shade and rain protection. What sort of size would you suggest? Also I have never used a tarp, I am thinking of getting two awning poles for the front and using guy ropes for the rest, does this sound sensible? I don’t need standing height but would like to be able to sit in wet weather.

G'day Margot,
Great idea - the Hiker Fly is a really popular option for this. Its nice and lightweight, and a great addition to swag or compact camping. Awning poles for either side to create a slight peak is the best way. Check out the Product Reviews on the Hiker Fly page for loads of photos from other campers, and how they've set theirs up.

Material weight1 answer
What is the weight of these tarps i.e. grams/sq metre? Thanks V.M.
Tim - Bargara(8 months ago)
G'day Tim,
Oztrail states that this is made from a Silver Coated 14x14 Weave 1000D HDPE material. They don't specify a grams/sq metre, although when you select the size on the product page it will show you the total weight for the size you are after in the Details & Specs.

Using as an awning for a small camp kitchen - eyelets 1 answer
Hi, I’ve never used a tarp before, plan to purchase to use over part of our small 4 man tent (it’ll be just myself and my 9 year old son) to create a small area to create a kitchen/dining area. Sorry if I’m sounding really ignorant but if this doesn’t have eyelets can you use the D-rings over awning poles? Or will they be too loose? Am I better to find a tarp that has eyelets and D-rings?
Samantha - Terrigal, NSW(3 years ago)
G'day Samantha,
Not a silly question at all! Yep, you can absolutely use awing poles with the d-rings on this tarp with no issues. There is obviously a little more room in the d-rings when compared to eyelets, but it doesn't affect the performance of your setup at all.

Can it be used as a tent floor protection(under tent)?3 answers
Some camp sites are rough and can damage the floor of tents. Would this tarp provide good additional protection? If not, what would you recommend?
Pawel - Brisbane, QLD(3 years ago)
G'day Pawel,
I can but be aware that most camp grounds would allow it to be used, as it suffocates any plant matter. Youre best option would be looking at the Ultramesh Tarp.
Lauren - Snowys(3 years ago)
Hi Lauren, My tent has already a solid floor so this should not make it any worse shouldn’t it? I’m looking to protect the tent not the area around the tent.
Pawel - Aspley, QLD(3 years ago)
G'day Pawel,
I do understand that, however the rules are generally made by the campground owners & need to be adhered to. I have heard of people being asked to remove tarp footprints from their tents whilst on holiday, so if you are wanting to protect the bottom of your tent with something that you know is 100% approved anywhere you go, the ultramesh tarp is the way to go.

Waterproof 1 answer
May be a daft question but could you please advise waterproof rating. Pondering this as an option to cover gap between Ranger roof and 270 Foxwing awning. Thank you.
Jo - Boorowa, NSW(3 years ago)
G'day Jo,
There's no Waterhead rating for this tarp as Oztrail haven't actually done the waterproof ratings test on this product. Having a look at it, it appears as though it will do the trick, but we cant actually provide you with a waterproof guarantee.

reasonable length for a A-frame tarp1 answer
Hi, what would be the longest span for a simple A frame set up (with just 2 poles, 1 at either end) that would still be stable and not flap all over the place? Would it also be OK to have the tarp oriented diagonally, so that the poles are at the corners of the tarp rather than the middle?
Steve - Sydney, NSW(4 years ago)
G'day Steve,
There isn't a hard and fast rule here, unfortunately. Generally, any unsecured tarp length greater than about 2.5m will likely flap, but it will vary depending on the weather conditions and pegs/ropes etc. You could orient the tarp diagonally if you wanted to, you can really set up a tarp shelter however you would like.

Does the tarp have eyelets down all sides or just on the corners1 answer
Does the tarp have eyelets down all sides or just on the corners - I want to put up with poles x8 poles (3 per side in effect) with guy ropes.
Dean - 2089(4 years ago)
G'day Dean,
These tarps have D rings on the corners and down the sides of the tarp. The amount of D rings depends on what size tarp you need. For example, 4x6 has a total of 6 D rings, 10x12 has 16 D rings, 12x12 has 16 D rings and 12x20 has 20 D rings.
