Staff tip:In the Video, Lauren mentions that the R−value is 6 for the Exped Synmat 9 LW Sleeping Mat which was the correct at the time of filming. Exped now test their mats to the ASTM F3340−18 standard, making it easier to compare brands and be confident in your purchase. Whilst the Exped mats have not changed, the R−Value has been updated in accordance to the ASTM F3340−18 standard.
Most people are seeking lighter weight - probably half this weight - especially as we age - we are looking for light weight features -Is the comfort/ insulation etc likely to be worth having to carry increased weight?

The Synmat 9 LW certainly isn't the lightest mattress on the market, however they do have a very good R-value, so can be used in almost any climate worldwide. In terms of comfort, they are 9cm thick, so are amongst the thickest options available. If your preference is for something lighter, then you may need to sacrifice on R-value and comfort. We'd recommend looking at the Sea to Summit Ether Light Insulated mats, and the Thermarest Neoair mats.

At this point in time we don't stock the mat covers for the Exped mats, and as we have to order these at least 6 months in advance we won't be stocking them in the near future. It might be best to purchase one online from an international seller who have them in stock.

I've just had a lay down on both the Sea to Summit Comfort Plus and the Exped Synmat 9 LW Sleeping Mat. I found the Sea to Summit to be generally more comfortable when lying on my back but when I rolled onto my side, I found it to be a little thin. The Sea to Summit option was also a little narrow, I'm not big by any stretch of the imagination but found myself using every inch of the mat. The Exped is roomier and a little better for restless or side sleepers I feel.

Exped recommends that you store the Exped Synmat 9 LW sleeping mat unrolled with valves open in a dry, cool area. Most people do this either by laying it under the bed or by hanging it in the wardrobe.

You certainly could remove the mat from a swag and use the Synmat 9 in it's place. To inflate this mat, you open the valve and press down on it to pump it up - this will take about 5 minutes to fully inflate.
To deflate, you just undo the valve, and then roll/press down on the mat and it should be fully deflated in about 5 minutes as well - so all in all, it won't take you very long to set up/pack up each day in a swag.Â
