Gday, could the grill be used in a regular fire if the pit wasn’t needed?

G'day Dave,

You could, but the legs aren't self-supporting in that they need to hook into the fire pit frame to maintain structure.
If you were just using it in a fire on the ground the leg support may slip and collapse the grill.

Do you recommend using a charcoal starter with this or could I get away with lighting the charcoal in the fire pit itself?

I'm not 100% sure to be completely honest, it may have to be something that other people can share their experiences with.
What kind of charcoal will you expect to be using? I don't have this particular fire pit, but have one similar that we use real whole wood charcoal with, which lights up easy as pie. If you are wanting to use those processed charcoal bricks it may be another story.

I’ve heard inklings that it doesn’t throw much heat off, and should be considered more a cooker than a fireplace. Ideally I want something a few people can sit around in winter and stay warm... anyone have first-hand experience they can share?

Yes, the BBQ 310 Firepit will produce a decent amount of heat, ideally it is suited for cooking or keeping two people warm. If there are three or more of you then you may need to consider the larger Firepit.

The 310 BBQ Firepit is a good compact option if you're needing something for 2 or 3 of you. You should be able to angle a few pieces of lightweight timber around 30cm long without much trouble. If there are more than 3 of you, we'd generally recommend the larger 450 BBQ Firepit.

Using the grill, I just placed a 4.5 Quart Camp Oven on top and it was surprisingly sturdy. I was mindful to have the oven evenly positioned in the centre of the grill though and would advise you place your Firepit on level ground. Cheers

Yes, the baseplate needs to be attached to keep the unit upright, that is what stops the legs from splaying apart and keeps it upright.
