Sleep in longer, keep your tent cooler and set up in seconds with the Speedy Blackhole 3 from Explore Planet Earth.
This tent has the same easy to use pop up frame as the original speedy tents with the addition of the Blackhole feature. This is a black fly and inner, which helps to block out those early morning sunrises and keep the interior cooler. You can also light up the interior of your tent as it features an LED intents lighting system with USB battery adapter (batteries not included) or it can be used with a separate power bank.
The Speedy Blackhole also has fully taped seams to prevent leaks and features No-See-Um mesh windows for ventilation and insect protection. You won’t lose your keys or phone, as there are also interior accessory pockets to keep your essentials safe and sound. Take your Blackhole 3 from Explore Planet Earth on your weekend getaways for quicker setups and later sleep-ins.
the previous iteration of this tent had a tendency to leak through the loops for rolling up the windows once they were soaked. has this improved on this tent?
G'day SJD,
I'm not aware of that being a known issue sorry. The overwhelming majority of feedback we had on the original Speedy models was positive, and we definitely didn't see a common thread of any issues.
You've mentioned the loop leak occurred when the tent was soaked, which sounds more like the waterhead rating of the tent has been surpassed. Potential leaks will occur on any tent if its waterhead rating is exceeded, and in those cases the first point of failure would be stitching points.
The original Speedy waterhead rating was 2000mm. The current Blackhole Speedy is 3000mm so, straight of the bat it has a higher waterproof rating and should give you a longer time out in the rain.
I have a queen self inflatable mattress. Would it fit in here? Thanks
G'day Sarah,
We've previously tested this out and know mattress' up to 200L x 150W cm will fit in the Speedy 3.
Hope that helps!
Hi. Does the black fly not cause the tent to absorb heat the way a black car does on a sunny day? I see the suppliers state that the black inner tent helps to keep you cool but I can imagine it gets a bit warm, ventilation not withstanding. Thanks!
G'day Margot,
Whilst there's no standardised testing on it, most companies that have a blackout tent or darkroom tent (eg. light suppression coating) do claim that that technology can contribute to the tent being a few degrees cooler.
As it blocks light and UV rays, the inside of the tent is likely to not be as hot, as there is less radiating heat.
Ofcourse in full sun in the middle of summer you won't notice much difference, so your location and orientation when pitching the tent will be important.
i want to go camping in the middle of winter will this be warm enough ?
G'day Tahla,
Tents themselves aren't actually warm, and don't really provide insulation properties unless you're looking at something more heavy-duty such as canvas. The Speedy Blackhole 3 has a good Waterhead rating through the tent and floor, so as long as you have good quality, warm sleeping gear you should be fine. One thing to note though is that this tent isn't very strong due to the nature of the 'pop-up' frame, make sure you have fully pegged it out and got the tension across the fly correct, otherwise you may have water pooling which can get quite heavy.
I am most interested to find out more about how to power the lights. Thanks
G'day Julie,
The lighting in the tent can be powered using AA batteries, or you can plug a USB power bank into them if you want a rechargeable option. The lights are bright enough for you to see in the tent, but not quite bright enough to read by.
I was planning to buy this with a stretcher rather than a SI mat. Would it fit?
G'day Karl,
Stretchers and pop up style tents don't really work together, but if you really wanted to try and fit a stretcher we'd suggest trying a low-rise stretcher, however it's not something we'd be comfortable recommending.
Hi my girlfriend and I are tossing up between the speedy 3 and 4. We have a queen sized inflatable mattress and wondered if we would fit a small backpack and space for shoes in the 3? In person is the 4 noticeably much larger to warrant the extra $100? Thanks Luke
G'day Luke,
A queen inflatable mattress (single height) will just fit inside the Blackhole 3, without room to spare for bags and shoes. We'd recommend stepping up to the 4P if you're wanting enough space for bags as well as the mattress inside the tent. You get quite a bit more width in the tent, but it would be worth having a look at the floor plan of both to give you a better idea as well.
Is this tent waterproof and will last through a moderate rain shower without getting wet inside?
G'day Ella,
The Speedy Blackhole 3 has a waterhead rating of 3000mm on the fly, so it should keep you nice and dry. One thing of note with this style of tent is that you'll need to make sure you peg out all of your guy ropes well to ensure that there isn't too much sag in the roof, as this could be a cause for some rain to pool.
For example the Zempire Monstamat Twin Camp Mat?
G'day Mal,
The Monstamat measures 201 long x 132 in width. The sleeping area of this tent measure 245 long x 200 in width so the mattress should fit nicely with extra room for luggage!
How well does the blackhole treatment on the fabric work to block light compared to the Coleman Darkroom range?
G'day Kahle,
The Blackhole treatment is pretty similar to the darkroom treatment on the coleman tents.
hi, does this tent have dual access from either sides? and does it have two windows or one?
There's only one entry, Meiling, and windows on each side. I don't have one set up that I can check for you, but I'm pretty sure there is also a vent in the flysheet at the rear of the tent, but this isn't accessible from the inside.
Do you have a groundsheet recommendation to protect the bottom of this tent?
G'day Matt,
We really love the Oztrail Ultramesh Tarps for using as groundsheets. You'd probably want to look a the 2.44m x 3.65m option. It'll be a little long but this will give you a nice clean 'door mat' out the front!
Is this the same size as the normal speedy pop ups or is it longer and will accommodate taller people?
G'day Matt,
It looks like EPE have made the Speedy Blackhole 3 Pop Up quite a bit longer than the classic EPE Speedy 3 Pop Up. This model has a sleeping area that's 280cm long as opposed to the classic length of 220cm.
