Salomon doesn't offer any specifics around the Thermomoulded bottom but the runners among our Snowys team suggest that the moulded bottom secures the flask inside the vest pocket and reduces excess movement/flapping of the pocket as water is consumed and the flask becomes empty.  They are both listed as 500ml/17oz, so I'm not too sure where you're seeing the 16oz reference.
