I've checked in with Sea to Summit on this and these mat couplers are better suited to lighter weight hiking style mats.
The Universal Mat Coupler Kit would be a great alternative.

Yes, you can use these coupler straps with two tapered mats, however, your feet will both taper in at the foot to match the contour of your mats.
