When travelling with a family, you want a shelter that’s reliable, quick to pitch and with plenty of room – which is where the Oztent RX-4 comes in.
The great thing about the RX-4 is how versatile it is. Its design is built on their original 30-second tent, but with full height and two rooms for extra living or sleeping space. You can set up the main part of the tent on its own or add the side panel system and floor which creates a fully sealed two-room tent. This tent is constructed from Oztent’s fully waterproof, UV resistant and CPAI-84 flame retardant ModCan material for strength and durability over your many adventures.
The RX-4 features a No-See-Um mesh skylight which allows you to stargaze while keeping out insects and providing extra air flow. This model also comes with a fly included which will help to keep the tent cool when the weather is hot and reduce condensation in chillier conditions. Spacious, easy to use and weatherproof – the RX-4 is perfect for families or groups who love to explore.

I am wandering the best way to keep this tent dry whilst on roof racks - is the case waterproof ?
G'day Sebastian,
The bag for the tent isn't waterproof, however, it is water-resistant, so depending on the weather it should do a fairly good job of keeping the tent dry. If you're likely to head away when it is going to be quite wet then the RV Pro Travel Case is an excellent option to keep your tent dry on roof racks. We've also seen a range of tarp wrapping techniques with these bags too, so it's probably worth a more permanent solution if you're likely to hear away when it is wet.
We are currently looking at the RX4 but i have a Question. if using the complete system is the front "room" fully waterproof - the reason i ask is because the rear tent section has a fly so i am concerned the front room could leak We have just dumped our coleman weathertec tent as it would always leak in the front section and anywhere the fly touched the tent would also leak through
G'day Monica,
The front room of the RX tent is waterproof so you won't have any worries there, however it is mainly designed as a living room area. The rear section has the fly to reduce condensation on cold nights, as the tent has a single skin. If you sleep in the living room area you may find that you get some condensation, however, you can reduce that by opening up all of the ventilation windows.
I have seen on some of the accessory packaging that it has RX-3 written on them. will there be an RX-3 being released soon?
G'day Shaun,
At this stage we're not aware of any plans for an RX3 model from Oztent. As far as we're aware the packaging on the RX-4 says RX-3/4 which might where you've seen that before.
Hi there - I noticed the website still mentions the cashback offer (but details state this ended in June). Has the offer been extended? (I’d definitely grab one if it has...) Thanks
Any reviews on how well it handles snow and high winds?
G'day John,
The Oztent Rx-4 Touring Tent is rated as 3-4 seasons. This means that it will be able to stand up to some light snow but if it gets heavy and piles on the roof, then you might find yourself in some strife. As for winds, they're a strong and tough tent but given that they have large square walls when compared to dome tents, they won't hold up quite as well if the wind gets a little hairy.
I have the rv5 with all the "add ons". How does this rx4 compare to the rv5? Is it considered an upgrade to go to the rx? Is this new canvas of higher quality? Cheers
I'm just confirming with Oztent exactly what the Modcan material is made of Todd. It feels more like a polyester rather than a canvas.
It is lighter duty than the 8Oz polycotton canvas used on the RV tents, but not necessarily lesser quality. It's aimed at an end user looking for a balance between weight and durability. If weight is a secondary consideration to durability then the RV tents are a good choice.
I'll post the information on the Modcan as soon as I hear back from them.
Hi Todd, Oztent have come back with some interesting information on the Modcan material.
It is a synthetic, I'm not sure if it is technically a canvas, but it comes with some very positive traits.
This is the information from Oztent - Modcan has almost double the tensile strength and has more mass than the 8Oz canvas used on the RV tents. It also offers three times the resistance to water penetration, double the UPF rating and is fire retardant.
So I need to go back on my earlier comment regarding Modcan being lighter duty than the 8Oz canvas, it is, in fact, the other way around.
Can the panels and floor be left zipped together and stowed away to make it easier for the next time? Can a tagalong be fitted at all? Cheers
G'day Brodie,
You can fold away your Oztent RX-4 Touring Tent with the attachments still on, it will just be super bulky, that's the only downfall. As for the tagalong tent, you can use an RV4 tagalong without any concerns with the RX-4 but you can only do this with the panel system removed.
Hey guys, how are the seals on the front room? is it like the rv4 front rooms where there are gaps where the zips finish? just hoping it is a suitable place for kids to sleep without crawlies getting in.
G'day Andrew,
The Oztent RX-4 Touring Tent seals up quite nicely with its zips, so you shouldn't have any issues at all with crawlies getting in with the kids.
Further to our previous answer regarding just how sealed the front room of the RX tent is, here are a few things we have noticed.
It's not completely sealed in the same sense that the rear tent is but is still a more than adequate weatherproof space.
The eyelets for the awning poles are located on the inside of the awning wall. If we were being picky you could argue that water will get in through these eyelets. This would be minimal as they are located at peaks and a guy rope is placed over the spigot would help to seal any spaces.
There is also a small gap at the base on each side where the side wall and floor zippers meet the tent. You're almost always going to get a gap where zippers meet. If you're getting water in through here then you've probably got bigger problems to worry about.
Personally, given its awesome versatility and liveability, these are not things that would concern me if I was considering this tent.
Hi. What is the difference between the ModCan material used on the RX-4 and the canvas used on the RV-4? The RX-4 tent weight seems a less than the equivalent RV-4. Also (tongue-in-cheek) does the Oztent RX-4 come with a 12A or 13B rotary engine (and does it have that classic Mazda rotary exhaust sound)?
G'day Aaron,
The Oztent Rx-4 Touring Tent has the 13B but unfortunately, due to new emissions standards, the exhaust sound just isn't what it used to be! As for the canvas though, I gave Oztent a buzz to ask. They told me that it was a new canvas they've made for the global market. It's more fire resistant than previous, it's stronger and more robust than the old canvas too.
G'day Aaron,
I've just weighed the accessories box and it was about 10.8kg. As for the canvas on the RV range, I gave Oztent a buzz and they told me that they're only planning on using it for the RX range. Of course, they might change this down the track but for now, it's just for RXs.
i.e. One that has the 2.6x2.6 sleeping area?
G'day Sarah,
There will be an Oztent RX-5 Touring Tent coming out in the near future. As soon as we get the all clear from Oztent, we'll be sure to throw it up online!
G'day Sarah,
Just an update from my previous answer. The Oztent RX-5 Tent is now available and is you can see it here.
