The bestselling RV tent, the Oztent RV-5 Canvas Touring Tent is the widest and deepest tent in the Oztent range yet maintains the multi-award-winning design that enables it to be quickly packed down to the same size as the RV4.
The patented internal aluminium frame of the RV-5 tent enables one person to effortlessly assemble and disassemble the tent in less than 30 seconds. Twist and Lock telescopic poles are included to extend the awning which features a stiffener that makes rolling up the awning a one-person job. Side and rear windows feature super fine insect mesh as does the door, while the rear window can be guyed out to allow ventilation in all weather.
Made with nothing but quality components, the Oztent RV-5 Tent features 8oz ripstop canvas, heavy-duty PVC flooring and guy ropes with built-in storage pockets.
Does the Tent have an entry point (hole) for say 240v power cable to go inside.?
G'day Tom,
Yes there is a zip power access point in the bottom left of the tent. See the features video at 3.08 minutes to show you where it is.
I'd like to purchase the correct number of hexpegs for an RV5 with the floorsaver and fly, so I'm wondering how many pegs are required with and without the guy rope hook. Thanks
G'day Eden,
The base of the RV-5 needs 8 pegs and the guy ropes need 7 pegs including the awning. The Floor Saver needs 8 pegs and the RV Fly has 8 guy ropes that need to be pegged down. Always handy to get a couple extra, the flat top hex pegs have also been tested and will fit through the floor saver eyelets.
How many pegs are required for the tent and guy ropes? I'd like to order the correct amount.
G'day Eden,
You'll need about 16 pegs for the tent and guy ropes. This should cover all the main points!
Is the RV5 able to be packed up with the fly attached and ground sheet rolled around it making it easier to setup next time?
G'day Craig,
You can leave the fly on, no worries. Probably wouldn't bother with the groundsheet, it adds extra bulk and will make it harder to get back in the bag.
Generally tends to be easier and leaves you with a cleaner tent to pack that separately.
Hope that helps.
Hi, with all these oztent rv tents, is it possible to packup the tent with all the bedding inside like with swags to speedup setup time? Thanks
G'day Al,
Nope. Even though they're an instant up tent with a unique frame, they are still a tent which means you can't pack bedding up inside.
The benefit of a swag is that the frame can be fully removed and everything rolls up in the same width & footprint, that's not the case with tents. They often have to be packed up in a specific way, with a much smaller end result than what you start with.
You can roll up a mattress but you can't do origami with it, if that makes sense!
Would be super great if you could though, would make set up and pack away so much easier.
Maybe there will be a tent in the future that can tick all these boxes!
Hi how does this compare with dark room tents in terms of reducing light inside? I imagine it allows some light in but is it as translucent as say the Coleman Gold non dark room tents or does it provide some more reduction in light and heat?
G'day Michael,
It probably sits somewhere between a standard Gold, and a Northstar in the Coleman tent range in terms of darkness.
There is some info around that a dark room tent can reduce heat, but the jury is out on the reliability of that claim - a standard tent set up for hot weather in the right location would be cooler than a Darkroom set up anywhere. Ultimately, whether or not a tent will be cool comes down to location, set up, and ventilation.
Hi, can you fit 3 single sleeping mats in this tent?
G'day Laura,
The sleeping area of this tent is 260cm x 260cm - so max width for each mat is 86cm. As long as the three mats you are looking at, or already have, have total width and length dimensions within the sleeping area dimensions, you'll be fine.
Could 2 rv5s be connected in the same way as the tagalong was - I.e. without double the awning space? Conscious that it may end up being too big for some campsites with a 4m awning?
G'day Paul,
Unfortunately not. Whilst you can roll away the RV5 awning, it does not have a zip connection option on the front of it. Ofcourse you could 100% set up the awning on one RV tent, and set the second RV5 up as close as possible to this, potentially having the awning overlapping the second tent, but it wouldn't be attached. If you want
Hi there. We have the RV5 with awning poles and sides. We are looking to extend the sleeping area but I'm unsure of my options now that the tagalong range is discontinued. I'm aware that another RV 5 could be added with the awning joiner accessory but the additional cost and buIk of a whole new tent is putting me off when I really only need additional space for 2 small (but growing) boys. Could you outline what my options are from your currently available stock? TIA
G'day Liam,
With the tagalong discontinued, there really is no other option other than an extra RV5 if you are looking for a two tent setup with a communal awning area.
The only other suggestion would be to get a front wall and fully enclose the awning room, giving you two sleeping spaces. But that ultimately takes away your awning area.
The RV5 Plus has an additional awning extension that may work for you, however as the original RV5 only has one zip on the awning edge, you cant zip both a wall and the awning extension on at the same time. It would need abit of modification on the original tent...if you took the RV5 to a canvas/awning specialist, they should be able to add an extra zip for you, which would allow you to attach the additional awning space.
If you're happy to look into that option, it would give you two room and a large undercover space.
Alternatively, you could look at swag options, or other smaller tent options like the Coleman Swagger for when your kids are looking for some independent space.
Many thanks Lauren. The swaggers look like they might be a good option ðŸ‘ðŸ¼
If you had to choose between the RV5 and the RX5 which one would you choose and why?
G'day Paul,
It's not a straightforward answer because it would depend on what you're looking for in a tent, and what you need out of it.
You could have solid and valid arguments for both.
There's a few key differences with the materials and how the awning gets sealed off, but ultimately they're the same tent.
If you're looking for a tent option in full canvas that gives you the flexibility with how you enclose the awning, then go with the RV5.
If having a fully sealed annex room & the 'full kit' of the included fly is important to you, then go with the RX5.
Check out our product features and set up/pack away videos for more information on an overall comparison.
How many guy ropes should be in the RV5 pack. We set up the RV5 for the first time the other day and there were only 3.
G'day Dene,
The guy ropes required for the tent itself are attached to the physical tent body.
There will be 2 separate/unattached guy ropes required for the two front awning poles, plus a spare, and you'll find those in your peg bag.
You can pick up additional ropes here if you find you need more.
Will 2 queen zempire monster mats fit in this tent?
G'day Oliver,
They won't I'm sorry, as the internal tent frame takes too much off the overall width of the tent.
You can comfortably fit a Monstamat Twin and King Single with a bit of room left over.
You'd want to work off 240cm width in the sleeping area to be on the safe side.
I note that the awning is flat. My Black Wolf tent awning is sloped allowing water run off. Are there any issues with the flat awning with water pooling?
G'day Steven,
The awning as supplied is flat, however, most users wll set it up using the peaked style to suit set up with the Deluxe Side Panels. If you're using the awning in the flat configuration when it's wet we'd recommend angling down one front pole slightly to assist water drainage, and making sure your guy ropes are well tensioned.
Hey, I've read contrasting reviews about how these tents hold up in the wind and rain. I've heard that the frame has broken for people rather a lot and oztent did not provide any help with warranty. Are these tents truly worth the money and will they last as long as some reviews say they do?
G'day Sam,
Great question, in general these tents are one of the best options is adverse weather, however any weather damage to a tent won't be covered under the manufacturers warranty - this is explicitly for any manufacturing defects. We'd recommend always keeping an eye on weather, and following good practices to reduce the chance of weather damage - pegging out all guy ropes, positioning tents so they don't catch wind, parking a vehicle to block some wind, regularly checking awnings/roofs for any signs of waterpooling in wet weather.
These tents really are one of the best tents on the market in this category, and with replacement components, even if you do have an unfortunate accident, they are easily repairable. We've seen some 15 year old Oztents through our SA store that are still going strong, but might need an occasional tune up.
there seems to be no collapsing in length during pack up video
G'day Wayne,
The frame pivots in on itself at the ends during pack down and reduces the overall packed length of the tent.
Does the tent come with the mat underneath the awning in the pictures?
G'day Charlie,
It doesn't, no, You can find the RV Mesh Floor Saver here.
Hello! Any chance that the Oztrail Easy Fold Queen Stretcher could fit in here and if so, what recommendations would you have for a mattress on top of the stretcher ? Thanks!
G'day Chloe,
Yes you can fit the Oztrail Easy Fold Queen Stretcher in the RV5 tent, have a look at the features video with Ben for an idea of how stretchers will fit in the tent. You can pop a mattress on top of the stretcher, but you'll generally end up with a bit of a hill in the middle due to the centre bar on the stretcher. You could pop something like the Zempire Twin Bomber Camp Mattress on top, which will pivot a little around the pole, or you could opt for two single mats.
If the fly is not necessary than what purpose does it serve?
G'day Rachelle,
The main purpose of the fly on the RV range of tents is to reduce condensation from building up inside the tent. As the RV tents are a single layer tent they can be prone to condensation in colder weather, so the fly is a recommended addition for winter camping, but is also handy to keep your tent a little drier in wet weather.
Can the RV5 be packed away without completely unzipping the additional side and front walls to make setup/packup easier? Or is the included bag too small?
G'day Max,
You won't be able to pack your RV5 up with the front and sides attached as the folding may cause some issues, and the tent bag will be too small to fit them. The side panels, and front panel each come with their own carry bag.
Can the rV5 fit to new rhino rack foxwing awning?
G'day Shah,
You sure can connect the RV-5 to the Foxwing 270 Awning Series 2. You will just need to purchase an awning connector to connect them to each other.
G'day again Shah,
I've just re-read the two parts of your question and can see that you've referenced the Batwing in one spot and the Foxwing in another. To clarify, the RV-5 will connect to the Oztent Foxwing using the awning connector, but unfortunately, we wouldn't be able to give you an indication regarding the Rhino-Rack Batwing as they are made by Rhino-Rack and we have no access to this information. You might need to confirm with a Rhino-Rack supplier.
Is it essential to be the series 2 Foxwing? Pretty sure I have the series 1 Foxwing but I can't see why it would work any differently. TIA
G'day Dan,
You can connect an RV5 tent to your series 1 awning with no worries at all, you'll just need the awning connector as Shah did above.
Is the OZRV5 Tent carry bag waterproof ?-Some people have suggested that the tent bag supplied with the RV5 is difficult to repack tent in and the bag is not water resistant. Has anyone also complained about this ?
G'day Michael,
The bag supplied with the Oztent RV range isn't explicitly waterproof, so if the tent is going to end up on a roof rack in poor weather conditions we'd suggest the addition of a tarp or some extra waterproof spray on the fabric
I have a 1.8 metre long cage roof rack on my vehicle - is it suitable transport the Oztent given it would only be supported at 2 points -ie: front and back bars of the roof rack . I am concerned that the weight of the tent between the bars may bend the internal frame over time .
G'day Michael,
Having seen quite a few Oztents secured on roof racks most people tend to have a similar set up to what you've described. I've not heard any reports of other frames bending from the load spread across the racks so we think you should be fine.
hi, I have been given (I assume) an older rv5 by my aunt, I assume as it is a blue colour, is this an rv5? and will the new accessories fit it? thanks
G'day Mark,
I've just given Oztent a buzz about your question, and they've told me that the older model RV tents that are blue won't be compatible with the current range of RV accessories, unfortunately.
Hi can you join up an rv4 with rv5 with the awning connector or side panels?
You can Giles, in the sense that the zippers are of the same gauge and are compatible. However, the RV5 is wider than the RV4, so you'll only be able to join one of the side panels and the zipper will only go as far as the RV4 awning will let it, leaving about a 20cm offset between the two tents.
If you can make this work, then there's no reason why you can't join the two.
Or can you attach a 2m wide Tagalong to the side awning of the rv5?
G'day Rudy,
No one here as ever given that a crack before but we're pretty confident your logic checks out. As long as you're happy to put the RV2 on either side of your Oztent RV5 Canvas Touring Tent because the zippers might only go particular ways which make it so that you have to have it on a particular side.
Hi Snowy's, my partner and I are looking at purchasing this oztent, but i need some furthur information. I have seen alot of reviews and they mostly contain info about how easy it is to set up. My partner and I are not hardcore campers, we mostly camp on grass areas. Im mostly concerned about the wind durability of the Oztent. Also, are there other tents of similiar shape and make of materials that are more durable that I should look into. In saying that, is this one of them? I dont mean to be a pain, but $1000+ takes a while for me to save and I want full confidence in my purchase. Cheers
G'day William,
Not a pain at all mate, there's nothing wrong with wanting peace of mind, especially when paying so much for a tent. You can certainly rest easy in winds with the Oztent RV5 Touring Tent, as much as you can in tents anyway. If you use your guy ropes and peg the tent out well, then you'll be able to stand most standard Australian weather. If you were wanting to look at another option, the only one I would really recommend is the Black Wolf Turbo Range of tents.
Hi, I know that someone who has attached the RV Shade Awning Extender (CTA-RVSE-D) to the front of the RV-4 awning and it works very well but I'm wondering if the RV-5 works with the same awning extender? Or does the newer version (TORA-EX25-E) attach to the front of the RV-5 awning? Many thanks for your help.
G'day Jasmin,
I'm fascinated by what you're describing as I've never heard of this idea. Unfortunately, I'm not sure how you'd attach them together and we don't have either the tent or awning on display for me to physically check. All I can offer is that both CTA-RVSE-D and TORA-EX25-E are 250cm, while the Oztent RV5 is 260cm wide, so while not perfect, from a width point of view it would be possible.
Do I have to season the oztent RV5 if so what is the best way
G'day Raymond,
No need to season the Oztent RV5, it's ready to go as soon as you take it out of the box.
In one photo i have seen of the rv5 the floor appeared to have a bar running width ways accross the tent, near the back of the tent. Is the floor completely flat with nothing on it?
G'day Dan,
You're right, the RV5 does have a bar from the frame running across the floor right up the back of the tent.
Snowys - is this bar at the very back, or would your mattresses be on top of it? we have great hiking mats we'd plan to keep using in this tent but you wouldn't want a bar under them... Thanks!
G'day Dan,
The bar does sit forward from the back of the tent by about a foot or so and run the width of the tent. I think they've done it this way to allow the frame to pack down to a more practical size. I'd almost suggest that as the roof slopes down toward the back of the tent and there's a bit less practical space there, I'd use the rear area for stowing gear and bring the beds forward a little towards the door.
We are looking at these 2 tents. Using 2 x blackwolf double deluxe mats, will these tents give you enough room to get dressed etc without standing all over bedding? Needing to fit in a young family of 4.
G'day Veronica,
For what you're after, I'd recommend the Black Wolf Turbo 300 as the 300cm x 300cm floor plan will give you an extra 40cm of room each way compared to 260cm x 260cm available with the RV5. You'll need at least 198cm by 270cm to fit 2x Black Wolf Mega Deluxe Double sleeping mats which would actually rule the RV5 out.
We are planning a trip to the Kimberly region but know our dual axle van can't go to some places so we are looking for a quick up tent for maybe 2 nights use at a time. We were looking at the Coleman Instant up Gold tents then Someone pointed me in the direction of the RV5. So just would like some general feedback from you regarding the pro's and con's please. I can see that the RV5 is alot more expensive but looks more durable.
G'day Joan,
Both tents are easy to set up and pack away, and provide good weather protection - so they would suit your style of camping.
But you are spot on in terms of durability – the RV5 is made from hardwearing canvas, so it’s a great option for touring where you’re setting up in a new location every night. But because of those heavy duty materials, it’s going to be heavier and bulkier than an Instant Up tent.
The Instant Ups are lighter, easier to handle and are really affordable, so they are a good option for occasional users.
So if durability is your most important criteria – the RV5 is the way to go, but if you’re concerned about weight and bulk – the Instant Up would be the better choice.Â
the back wall angle looks like it would reduce the length a bed could be the taller it was
You are correct Steve, I wrote an article to give our customers a guide for this precise reason. I did some measurements on various tent types and came up with a formula to help people work out if they can fit their stretcher in a tent. You can see the article here. For an RV5, I worked out, based on a stretcher of 45cm height, that you would need to reduce the useable space for a stretcher by 35cm, which gives you about 225cm of length from the doorway to the stretcher just touching the sloped side of the tent. I hope this helps.
Hi, we have a family of 4 (Mum, Dad, & 2 kids aged 5). We love the look of the RV5, but is it possible to fit 4 camp stretchers in it? Or will we have to look for another option to do this?
Hi Steve, it would really depend on the measurements of the stretchers you want to use. We’ve had feedback from customers who have said they’ve squeezed 4 in the RV5 – but it would likely be an extremely tight fit. The Oztent Jet Tent range or the Turbo range may be better for you, but that would all depend on your individual needs. We’d love to have a chat with you about this and give you a bit more insight, so give us a call on 1300 914 007 to speak to one of our knowledgeable sales staff.
I have had an oz tent and been very happy with it for 6 or 7 years. I have just noticed that it has some very small chafing on the back ridge pole corners. I suspect from moving it when I have hosed / cleaned it before packing it away. It has been used less than ten times and always been packed away carefully. I have the full package, including front, sides, fly, extra floor etc. Do you have any repair arrangements in place and has the carry bag been made just a little larger since I bought mine
Hi Max, As far as I know, there hasn't been any changes to the size of the RV5 bag over the years. Regarding repairs: You can contact OZTENT for sample pieces of material that can be glued or stitched on. I'd suggest talking to your local caravan canvas repairer if any stitching repairs are necessary.
Can you purchase side awnings for the rv5
