They say, ‘if it ain't broke, don’t fix it' but it’s the smart ones who over the years work out how to keep the good bits while making just a few impressive improvements. Maintaining the multi-award-winning design of their fast and easy 30-second tent, Oztent has got the smarts with their RV-5 Plus.
Same size, same high quality 8 oz ripstop polyester canvas, same large attached awning but the Plus has improved zips to make it even more waterproof when attaching accessories. There’s now a SkyMesh Skylight built into the roof which unzips from the inside to allow for a full, insect-free view of the stars while also providing extra ventilation on warm nights and the included fly improves the airflow even more plus reduces condensation. The tub floor is heat-sealed and made from heavy-duty 510g PVC and the strong aluminium frame can still be effortlessly assembled and disassemble by one person in less than half a minute!
So although there was nothing broken with the original design, sometimes all good things need an upgrade and that’s just what’s on offer with the RV-5 Plus from Oztent.

How far is the floor crossbar from the end of the tent? I’m assuming around 60cm? I have a camp site on the nsw central coast in a park that has very specific rules where we’re allowed to place tents on their mats and this information would be very useful before/if I purchase.
G'day Kate,
The internal RV frame is 2m deep - so in the RV 5 Plus which is 2.6m deep, the difference is 60cm.
It may be worth mentioning that the tent floor has to be pegged out fully to get the correct tension across the canvas for structure, water shed and zip function, etc, so the total floor footprint of this tent when set up is 260cm x 260cm.
Hope that helps!
Hi there, what is the set up time including the awning roughly? What about with the rain fly also? Is it possible to use this tent on sand? Thank you
G'day Josie,
It takes approximately 10mins the first time you set this up including the awning and the rain fly. Once you get the hang of it it's much quicker. You can use this on sand, I would recommend investing in some sand pegs if you choose to do so just to make sure the tent is still held secure in the sand.
Why is the RV5 Plus 200-300mm narrower inside than the RV5 but they still advertise it as being 260cm wide internally? Is this deliberate? You can’t fit 2x twin zempire bay tresses in anymore.
G'day Thomas,
The RV5 and RV5 Plus have always been the same tent body as far as we're aware, and there's no information from Oztent to suggest this has changed.
As a spare part, the RV5 frame and the RV5 Plus frame are exactly the same.
The Zempire twin stretchers are 132cm wide, so are 264cm wide side by side, which is too big for either tent. Because the frame takes up a few cm on either side of the tent at the main connector sections, the internal sleeping space sits at 255cm functionally, but that's been the case for at least the last 6 years that I've been on the Snowys team.
If you were previously using an aged or well loved RV5, it's possible the tent canvas relaxed and stretched out over time, allowing the frame to be pushed out abit more. That's the only explanation we can think of sorry.
There is no valid explanation for the difference. Twin Zempire mattresses at 264cm, made of foam, will fit and do fit in an RV5 snuggly and fit perfectly well. I’ve used this setup for years. The RV5 plus is narrower internally by 20-30cm and this is a design issue or manufacturing flaw. As a result you cannot fit two twin mattresses side by side. The 260cm width of the RV5 plus is overstated and this should be corrected in the specification and advertisements.
G'day again Thomas,
The frame for the RV5 and RVPlus are identical and interchangeable. I have confirmed with Oztent, after your initial question, that the tent dimensions are the same.
The only difference with the RV Plus is the sky viewing window and some minor feature changes, and it comes with the fly.
We've been selling the RV5 Plus for 2 years and have not had this feedback before, so I've got some more questions.
Can you please let me know how old your original RV5 is or what year you purchased it? And are you basing the RV5 Plus being narrower purely on the Monstamats not fitting, or have you physically taken a tape measure to the internal tent frame?
Once I have this info I'll follow up again with OZtent asap and see if we can work out what's happened here.
Hi I would like to know if the actual tent material is the same on the plus model as it looks different to the material on the Rv5. I have seen a video where they claim its not same and that it doesn't breath as well as the Rv5 they said its been treat to be flame resistance if true it might cause more condensation?
G'day Vasko,
The RV series all has the same 8Oz (180D) Ripstop Polycotton Canvas, but the RX series uses a different flame-resistant fabric.
Hope that clarifies the info for you!
How would you describe the condensation performance in the front awning room if you have the front and side doors on it? Im guessing that because it is one layer, then the condensation could be quite high?
G'day Tim,
Condensation occurs in any tent, depending on the environmental conditions.
Whilst we havent had any specific feedback about the front rooms on RV & RX tents, because they generally arent used as bedrooms, theres a few things you can do to help manage or reduce condensation if it occurs for you. You can check out our blog post here, or our podcast here.
hi, i noticed in your product demo video, the RV5 tent incl as standard the lightweight travel rain jacket. Oztent website however makes no mention of this ? is this still incl - or do we need to purchase as an accessory (and if so, how much ?). thanks, be well
G'day Paul,
At the time of filming the rain cover for the bag was something that was included. Unfortunately, Oztent are no longer doing the rain cover at all - so it's not available with this tent, or separately.
We have two stretchers L208 x W77 x H53cm. Given the roof slopes away, are we likely to be able to fit two in with space in between?
G'day Donna,
If you watch the features video we have online, at the 11:10 minute mark you can see Ben putting in a stretcher that is approximately the same height as yours, but larger width & length wise.
You'll have no issues getting your stretcher in, and you'll likely have a decent amount of floor space in the centre aswell.
Hi can you see silhouette from outside when turning on the lights inside the tent at night?
G'day Adf,
Canvas tents such as the RV series provide good privacy in this situation.
It's generally really only a concern with single-layer synthetic tents.
Hi, is the rv5 plus compatible with the caravan connector assessory?
G'day Shannan,
Yes, the RV5 Caravan Connector can be used with the RV-5 Plus Tent.
Hoping to fit two Zempire King Single Monstamats to create a queen sized bed with an Oztrail Deluxe Double Bunk Bed for the kids. Looks like it will just fit after checking the dimensions but I'm unsure if the bunks will be too high towards the back of the tent. Will they both be able to fit if the bunks are against the front of the tent/entrance, given that they're only 182cm long leaving a 73cm gap between the bunks and the back of the tent?
G'day Madelaine,
We're not able to try this out in person, so we'll just have to make an educated guess with some mathematics.
It's going to be tight. I think I'd err on the side of saying no because if the bunks touch the roof at any point you'll get moisture transfer or condensation dripping down, but you'll probably be able to get away with it.
Easy way around this is to pick up an RV5 Fly to use with your tent. If the bunks do touch the roof this should help work around any moisture issues.
Hi - I’ve read the other questions and still a little confused about what products this new tent is compatible with, is there a guide anywhere? I’m particular, is the 270 able to zip to this?
G'day Kay,
The RV5 Plus and standard RV5 have the same zip configurations, so they have the same compatibility with other Oztent products.
The only thing that's different between the two is that you'll need to get the Plus specific walls, for the Plus tent.
Hope that helps!
Hi Snowies, what are the differences between the two Tents?
G'day Ben,
The two models are slightly different in a couple of ways, I'll do my best to outline the differences without an essay!
The RX5 is essentially a complete package, you get the tent, the fly, the living room wall panel system, and the zip in bucket floor for the living room. They are made from an Oztent developed ModCan Canvas, that you'll only find on this range. This tent set up can't be altered, and there isn't any way to add extra accessories or attach it to other models, or awnings etc
The RV-5 Plus is a new and improved version of the original RV tent, they are made from 8Oz ripstop canvas, and come with the tent, and a fly. They have a range of accessories available, so you can enclose the front area, attach an additional tent, attach it to an awning, add an extra tarp extension, the list goes on. This option is great if you want the flexibility to build your set up bit by bit, and is good for a wider range of scenarios.
Overall we know both of these tents are great, and they feature the same great 30-second setup, with the same size sleeping area. It really comes down to personal preference regarding which direction you'd prefer to go.
Would it support its own weight? Or does it need to lie on its side?
G'day Hannah,
You can store the RV-5 Plus on its end, although you'll want to make sure it has a wall or similar to lean against securely.
Can an Rv5 and Rv5 plus attach together? And, would it presumably need an awning connector?
Sure can, Duncan. The RV5 Plus comes with a couple of zippers along the front so you can attach a front wall also using either the zipper on the awning or on the awning connector.
Can you attach a Oztent Tag-along tent to this?
G'day Alicia,
The RV-5 Plus Tent isn't able to be connected to a Tag-along tent.
*UPDATE* Oztent have confirmed that you can attach the tag-a-long with the new RV-5 plus. Nothing else is needed.
Oztent Side Awning Supplier Code:RV2SA Snowys Code:126789
G'day Chris,
Unfortunately not, the RVPlus models have a different zipper to the RV range for this particular accessory, so the side awning won't suit the RV5 Plus.
