Just when you thought the RV couldn’t get any better, Oztent goes and put their creative masterminds into action and come up with the RV-3 Plus.
Keeping all the beloved original features like the 30-second setup, high quality 8 oz Ripstop polycotton canvas, the large attached awning and the whizz-bang modular design. But… wait for it… it’s now gone to the next level with a SkyMesh Skylight built into the roof with easy internal zip open/closure allowing for viewing and great ventilation. It comes with a 210T silver-coated Ripstop polyester fly to provide increased ventilation and reduce condensation. They’ve also rejigged the zips on the awning so if you want to attach accessories like walls, you’ll be even more protected from wet weather.
There are so many extra details this time around but really, just imagine lying back, fully protected from both insects and the elements but still being able to stargaze and appreciate the night sky. That’s the cream on top with the RV-3 Plus from Oztent.

Hi there, I've seen Drifta makes a base for transporting Oztents, and that your website has an older blog post of someone who's made their own with instructions. I was wondering how much of a concern transporting the tent on roof bars would be. Should it be safe if strapped down securely, or have there been issues with the frame bending/warping/breaking with fitted on just 2 roof bars alone. Thanks!
G'day Jake,
If you are travelling along rough corrugations or bumpy dirt tracks, the roof bars or the tent may bend or flex. Platform racks or a base would be the best but it's still fine to use 2 x roof racks.
Otherwise, if you are on smooth roads and the rails are spaced well apart you shouldn't have any issues if strapped down properly.
Hi, If I purchased this but wanted to replace the poles supplied with another brand that has a longer spigot, would I need to replace the grommets/eyelets & how would this impact on the warranty? Thanks in advance.
G'day Kim,
The eyelets on the Oztent RV Range are compatible with spigots up to 8mm in diameter. I have just tested the Supa Peg and Supex Tent pole spigots instore with the RV-3 tent and they are 8mm and are a perfect fit. If the spigots you get are 8mm or less in diameter you shouldn't need to change the eyelets. If you were to change the eyelets that shouldn't affect the warranty, unless changing the eyelets causes something else to get damaged it wouldn't be covered under warranty.
Would the Coleman Queen Double−High Quickbed & Pump airbed fit in this tent?
G'day Rehana,
You'll be able to fit it in but head to foot will run across the doorway, and due to the rear wall tapering down, the mattress will be right up the front close to the door.
It's not an ideal option if you need functional floorspace inside the tent.
If you're utilising the awning space with walls, etc and can use outside space instead, you could be ok.
Would 3 kids stretchers fit in here with heads at the entry? Or would the stretcher ends be touching the walls please? Our stretchers are L157 x W57 x H31cm. Thankyou
G'day Brooke,
You should be able to fit them in with around 10cm to spare between the foot and the back wall.
Width wise, the RV-3 Plus is 240cm & you're stretchers will only take up about 180cm of that.
Hope that helps!
Has it got a light hook inside?
G'day Alex,
It has power strip tabs on the bottom front left of the tent where you can run a power cord up the side or attach something else. You could also connect a light to the frame or hook something on the loops of the tent, but there isn't a light hook in the middle of the tent as there is a big skylight opening.
I seem to recall that the RV-3 Plus came with a rain cover included as part of the bag. I can't seem to find any reference to that anymore. Have Oztent stopped including that?
G'day Brett,
They used to include this but now the Rain Cover no longer comes with the tent.
There is the separately available Oztent RV Pro Travel Case which is another heavy-duty cover for your Oztent and this has a Rain Cover included.
Hi, will the OZ tent RS-1S series 2 stretcher fit inside?
G'day Dre,
The Oztent RS-1S Stretcher would fit in horizontally in the RV-3, if you see the features video of this tent at 10:30 minutes you will see where Ben puts one of these in the tent. You would be able to fit one in comfortably with some space but 2 may not squeeze in.
Does the RV3 attach directly to the Foxwing awning or is a connector needed?
G'day Michelle,
As far as I'm aware you can connect an RV tent to the Foxwing with an awning connector, but bare in mind that the foxwing is designed to match up with RV5 and old RV5 tagalong tents, so the RV3 will be around 30cm short from matching up with the full side.
Hello can the former RV tent join to the new RV3 Plus? Or do I need awning connector? Thanks
G'day Faz,
According to Oztent, the original RV and RV Plus range are compatible with joining together.
You will need an awning connector though, and the zip orientations will be opposed. The only two tents you can join without are connecter are the Rv/Rv Plus tents with the discontinued Oztent Tagalongs.
do you still need the awrning connector with the new RV-3 plus touring models? or can they now zip together? is the a 4 in the range?
G'day Carly,
Yep, you absolutely need the awning connector. If you are facing two tents together, the zips will be oriented to opposing sides, so they won't connect.
There's no RV-4 Plus in the range, just the standard RV-4.
Hope that helps.
Being canvas should we still season the tent before use?
G'day Faz,
There is no need to season the Oztent before the first use.
When the rv3 plus is packed into the bag could I squash it into a 2 metre space
G'day Matt,
Unfortunately not, we've had a bit of a play around with this and the absolute smallest we could get is 201cm, due to the solid tent frame.
I'm not confident recommending you give it a go, unless you can find somewhere local that stocks them and try it out in real life.
I was just wondering how waterproof the sky roof is when it’s covered up? Could water get in if it’s belting down? Or do they recommend you using the fly when it’s raining?
G'day Matt,
The sky roof covers up like any other window with regards to weather protection. There shouldn't be any issues with this if your tent is pegged out well with correct tensioning. Sometimes heavy rain and wind can cause movement on guy ropes which can effect the tenison, so we recommend having a few tracer springs to add to your setup in bad weather.
If you're experiencing occasional showers or light showers, you should be fine, but if it's absolutely bucketing down or raining for longer periods a fly would be recommended. The fly also doubles up to help reduce any potential for condensation, which is not uncommon in single skin tents, so its a good investment overall.
Hope that helps!
Are they the same for Rv3 and 3 plus ?
G'day Kj,
No, they're not. If you have the RV-3 Plus, you'll need the specific Plus Side Panels.
Does this tent have blackout technology? If not, which touring tents do? I love the design of this tent however I do need blackout in a canvass tent. Same question for RV4 and 5
G'day Wayne,
The RV-3 Plus Canvas Tent doesn't have blackout technology. At this point in time, none of the canvas tents in the range have blackout technology. The main options we have with blackout technology are the Coleman Instant Up Darkroom Tents, and the Oztrail Fast Frame Lumos Tents - both of these tent series are polyester tents with an internal coating.
I have a fairly new RV3 already. Is the tent bag rain cover available to purchase as an accessory?
G'day Luke,
You can purchase the RV Pro Case separately, however, the rain cover isn't available as a separate item.
Is there a zip in floor available with the RV3 if i add the side and front panels? There are times where i may only want a wind break on one side others where need the entire enclosure?
G'day Graham,
Unfortunately not, there is no option for a zip in floor with the RV3 or RV3 Plus Tent. The RX-4 and RX-5 models are the only ones that come with a zip in floor, the floor is supplied with the tent and is only compatible with the RX tents.
Sorry if this is a dumb question but I’m very curious to understand why a fly is included with this tent, if the mesh ceiling is its selling feature? But perhaps it’s a paradigm shift kinda fly?
G'day Jane,
You won't be able to see the stars if you're using the tent with the fly on. The Skymesh is really designed for use in good weather (think summer nights) or situations where you won't need the fly. The fly is designed to reduce condensation in very cold conditions, so you probably won't be stargazing on a night like that!
