How do I change modes? Do I have to toggle through High/Med/Low/Strobe or can I simply switch on and change as I like?

Yep, you'll need to toggle through the modes by pressing the button. Unfortunately, the torch doesn't have mode memory, so each time you turn it on you'll need to toggle through to your chosen setting again.
