An evolution in powerful and portable heating, the Mr Heater Buddy Propane Gas Heater is a robust and lightweight solution for instant heat when and where you need it.
With the push of a button, the Buddy Heater delivers heat up to 9000 BTU/hr from a 450g disposable Propane cylinder (not included). It also features low oxygen, high-temperature cut-out and tip-over shut-off safety features for your peace of mind.
The Portable Buddy Heater from Mr Heater is a safe and reassuring purchase for your outdoor heating needs.
Can it work with butane cartridges with an adapter?
G'day Peng,
The Portable Buddy Heater can't be run with butane cartridges, and there is no adapters for this, as they run on a different type of gas. You can run them directly from disposable 450g Propane cylinders, or purchase a separate hose to run them from a refillable LPG cylinder.
I recently got given one of these heaters (i have the little disposable gas bottles as thats how i run my bbq too which is good). But if i wanted to change to a normal gas bottle is there a hose that works with all sizes eg 2kg or 9kg. I dont want to have to buy 2 hoses if i dont need to and i havent decided which size gas bottle i want to buy yet as it depends on space available on my a frame on my tow bar.
G'day Tara,
There are two hose options depending on the bottle size and outlet, unfortunately. LPG cylinders 1-3kg will have a 3/8" BSP fitting, 4kg with have either a 3/8" BSP OR a POL fitting, and the 9kg has the POL fitting. You can attach a brass adapter to the end of the hose to step the size up or down though, so I'd suggest picking based on the size bottle you think you're most likely to buy. The two different hose options can be found in the 'you might also like' section, below the Q&As.
so if i was to use a 4kg POL gas bottle and this hose (Coleman BOM/UNEF to POL High Pressure Gas Hose) and then had to use a gas bottle without POL on the off chance which adapter would i use? I notice you have heaps of different ones and im confused.
Hi again Tara,
If you're wanting to step down the end of the hose from POL to 3/8" BSP you'll need this adapter.
I want to buy this heater very soon but first a couple of questions: 1, Is this heater 'catalytic' ? 2, Can you please confirm this is the exact hose I need to run the heater from a 2kg gas cylinder - "Coleman/BOM/UNEF to 3/8" BSP High Pressure Gas Hose" ? I hope you are able to get to my question fast :-) Thank you!
G'day Sue,
Technically speaking the Buddy Heaters aren't a catalytic heater, they're a ceramic heater. If you're wanting to run the unit from a 2kg gas bottle with 3/8" BSP thread then yes, the Coleman/BOM/UNEF to 3/8" BSP High Pressure Gas Hose is the correct hose.
Just wondering how long the heat would last if i connected it to a 9kg gas bottle with the hose?
G'day Ryan,
The Mr Heater Portable Buddy Heater advertises a run time of up to 3 hrs off a 450gm propane cylinder.
Therefore, if we jump into abit of maths work we can assume around 18 of those cylinders very roughly is around a 9kg gas bottle, which the equals to up to 54hrs.
Obviously this is abit of a guide and will vary based on the conditions of usage.
Hope that helps.
Couldn't really figure it out from the video and BBQ galore, BCF and Anaconda were hopeless....
Hi Team I am wondering if this heater can use NG in my garage? If it does, do I need a regulator and change burner? Thanks.
G'day John,
Unfortunately, you won't be able to use the Portable Buddy Heater with natural gas. Natural gas appliances use different jets and have different fittings. All of the heaters we currently sell are only designed for use with LPG.
I have bought a Coleman hose to run this off a gas bottle and was wondering if l need to change this to a hose with a regulator?
G'day Alex,
Nope! You are absolutely fine to run the Mr Heater Portable Buddy Heater from the Coleman hose you've got, they dont need a regulator for LPG bottles.
I was wondering where the safest place is to store these in a caravan?
G'day Maria,
Thank for the question. The general rule with gas canisters is to store them outside of the van, maybe you have an external storage box that you can keep them in?
Do buddy heaters need a regulator for gas bottle
G'day John,
No need to worry about a regulator, all you need to run the Buddy Heater from an LPG bottle is the Coleman High-Pressure Gas Hose.
Hello
G'day Anthony,
You can run the Portable Buddy Heater from 9kg bottle using the Coleman High-Pressure Gas Hose in the 'You Might Also Like' drop-down menu.
It depends whether the connectin on the gas bottle is 3/8 BSP or POL, Anthony. 9Kg bottles are usually POL which is the large female connection on a gas bottle in which the hose connects from the side rather than directly down into the top and is the same as what is found on most BBQ's.
If this is what you are connecting to, then this is the hose you need - https://www.snowys.com.au/gas-hose-colemanbomunef-to-pol.
I have smaller lpg gas bottles than 9kg
G'day Lisa,
The Portable Buddy Heater can be connected to a 4.5/4.8 or 9kg gas bottle with POL fitting using the Coleman Gas Hose Coleman/BOM/UNEF to POL.
With an alarm
G'day Jo,
It is not recommended to use
sorry i am new to gas heaters. was wondering how much would it be please for the big buddy and what connectors do i need to set it up with the 8.5 gas bottles? will the elgas swap and go be the right choice for the gas?
G'day Nadine,
We don't currently stock the Mr Heater Big Buddy I'm sorry to say. Without having one in front of me I wouldn't be able to safely work out exactly what you might need.
Hi there - do you sell longer hoses than 1.5m to connect to gas bottles? My bottles are in the front boot of the van so 1.5m won’t be long enough to reach them without taking them out. I need a POL connection. Cheers!
G'day Sim,
Unfortunately, due to regulations, we don't have any gas hoses for the Mr Heater Portable Buddy Heater than are longer than 1.5m.
What would be the cost of a big buddy heater
G'day Phil,
We don't stock the Big Buddy as an everyday product but might be able to get one in as a special order for you. Feel free to give us a buzz on 1300 914 007 and our customer service team will be able to help you out.
Hi, I am thinking about using a 20lb LPG bottle to connect to this heater but not sure what type of hose to use.
Hi Kate, a 20lb or 9kg bottle will usually have a POL
We need to come back and update some details here. It seems that the recent Buddy heaters have a slightly modified gas attachment resulting in the hoses mentioned above no longer working. This is most likely due to the depth of the central pin not being long enough to depress the gas release valve inside the hose. Good news is that Coleman has almost identical hoses that do work, you can see the POL hose here and the 3/8 BSP hose here.
Do you need a regulator if you intend to use a 9kg POL bottle?
G'day Karen,
All you'll need is a Cylinder Hose Kit with a POL fitting from Primus to use the Mr Heater Portable Buddy Heater with a 9kg gas bottle.

Am looking for something small, not too expensive, not heavy and to which I can easily attach gas or battery to. I would not keep it on once I go to bed. Thanks
I'm looking for something to heat an art studio space approx. 6m X 10 m with high ceilings. Would this be considered an 'enclosed pace'?
G'day Bev - I really can't be prescriptive on things like this. We have to and ought to give you the relevant information and it's up to you what you do with is. These heaters are marked as 'outdoors only' and that's because they can produce carbon monoxide. Sorry I can't be more helpful, but we have to cover our backsides. Cheers, Paul
Is it safe to use in a caravan with windows slightly open for ventilation?
It takes a long time to get the pilot flame lit on my heater, is this normal?
Just wondering if I can use this inside a tent, with little air flow?
We use ours to warm the tent up on freezing nights, before we go to bed,but you should leave a couple of windows open slightly. Never go to sleep with any fuel burning device in an enclosed space. Ever!
