What is the surface of this grill coated with? Will steel wool strip it?

The grill is made of steel and coated with enamel. It's not recommended that you use steel wool on enamel as it will scratch. Instead, try a cloth to wipe it clean or for more stubborn marks a nonscratch cleaning pad with bi-carb soda might do the trick!
