can you please confirm that this compass is designed for use in the southern hemisphere.
This is a pretty basic compass Cory, albeit still very functional, but they have not been tested or calibrated for international use.
If this is a requirement of yours then I suggest looking at one of the Suunto compasses in our range such as the M-3 G Compass.
Thanks for that. You do have some that are Southern Hemisphere calibrated such as the Suunto A-10 SH Compass. (The code SH or MS will indicate that a compass is calibrated for Southern Hemisphere.) Not sure why your selling some models that will not work well in Australia. Perhaps a disclaimer?
All the compasses we sell are balanced for the Southern Hemisphere Cory, it's when you take one of the southern hemisphere calibrated compasses into the northern hemisphere that you may run into some troubles, which is where their 'Global' compasses come into play.
I know some compasses use markings on their base plates, but I've never seen such markings on a Suunto compass. I am just confirming if Suunto does in fact mark their compasses in some way to indicate their region of calibration, I'll let you know as soon as I hear back from them with these details.
In the meantime, any compass you purchase from us has been calibrated for the Southern Hemisphere.
I hope this helps.
Sorry, Cory, just looking back at your original question, I briefed over it and assumed you were looking for a compass to take overseas. So just to reiterate, yes they are calibrated for Southern Hemisphere, but there is nothing that indicates they would or would not be useful for the Northen Hemisphere.
Sorry for any confusion here.
No I can't sorry Cory, these are a basic compass and as such don't come with all the testing and documentation that Suunto provide. The information listed on our product page is placed there by us based on the information we found. Such information is not available on the Elemental compasses.
Just FYI, they work in the Southern Hemisphere, but the needle certainly isn't as level as the needle on a Suunto compass. I'm still waiting to hear back from Suunto regarding how they actually mark their compasses to indication their calibration region.
Hi Cory, Suunto has come back to me with some info. They don't place region markings on their compasses, instead, the region is purely indicated by the product name, with the letters SH or G indicating the compass models that are suitable for the Southern Hemisphere.
So the most affordable compass we have that comes with some form of documentation stating its region for calibration would be the A-10 SH compass from Suunto, but this is over twice the price of the Elemental compasses.
I think that the Elemental compasses would be more than suitable for your Scout group, they do work in the Southern Hemisphere.
Hi, does this compass really weight 0.254kg or is it just a typo?
G'day Harish,
Thanks for pointing this error out. The weight is in fact only 0.06kg (60g) - we'll look to update our website now.
