If there was a medal for lightweight performance and packability, the NeoAir XLite from Thermarest would take out the gold.
This air mat focuses on providing stellar warmth-to-weight ratio, with 6.4cm of thickness that has an internal baffle structure for support, and an R-value of 4.2 to insulate you from the cold ground on year-round expeditions. The shape of the mat is tapered to reduce bulk, and ultralight 30D rip HT Nylon fabric is used to save those extra grams. It features ThermaCapture™ technology and a Triangular Core Matrix™ construction which works together to trap radiant heat and prevent heat loss while keeping the pack size down. Inflating it is simple as this mat has Thermarest’s high-performance WingLock valve which inflates 3 times faster, as it’s got one-way inflation plus a larger opening. It also comes with a pump sack to help you inflate it, a field repair kit should you need to patch it up mid-adventure and a compact stuff sack for storage.
Packing up to the size of your drink bottle, and available in a range of sizes to suit every fast and light adventurer, the NeoAir XLite from Thermarest is the crème de la crème of the air mat category.

I'm looking for a good quality, light hiking mat that will keep me warm on cold nights in winter during multi-day hikes but also be flexible enough that i'm not over heating on warmer nights. Can you clarify if mats that indicate they radiate heat will meet both needs or do i need to look for alternatives?Ideally looking for a wider version but not too long. Thanks for advice.
G'day Peter,
I think there's a bit of miscommunication here. Mats don't radiate heat at all, as they are not a stand-alone heat source. When mats like the NeoAir XLite Sleeping Pad use that terminology, they are essentially saying in a fancy way that the mat functions as an insulative layer to prevent heat loss from your body through the mattress and into the ground.
Thats where the R-Value comes into play, it's a standardised insulation rating that highlights the effectiveness of that mat in preventing thermal transfer between your body and the ground. This works in both ways, whether the ground is hot in summer or cold in winter.
The mattress will not generate heat or make you hotter, it simply assists in maintaining your existing body temperature as it is, at any given point.
The higher the R-Value, the more effectively it can do this in a broader range of temperatures.
