The Coleman Montana 12 CV family tent is the deluxe shelter for family getaways or a group camping holiday with numerous room dividers, space for three queen sized airbeds and a massive front awning. The Montana is your home away from home.
The combination of fibreglass and steel pole frame creates a roomy interior with near vertical sides and suspension in the wind. Three panels in the front can be used as individual awnings or zipped together to create one large awning with the added benefit of zip back side walls.
Doors are situated front, back and on each end, as well as internal room divider doors all featuring mesh and privacy panels, while an extra screen features in one room to further divide the tent into four rooms.
Four windows, floor level vents and mesh roof panels provide superior ventilation, colour coded poles make for easy set-up, internal organizers save essentials getting lost, and all packed up in a wheeled carry bag, the Coleman Montana 12 CV will be the envy of every other holidaymaker in your campsite.
How many single or KS stretchers would fit in here. Looking for a scout group when we try fit 6 stretchers in for Cuboree. Can the wall dividers be removed so 6 stretchers could fit across the horizontal wall all facing the same direction ?
G'day Jacinta,
The Montana 12 CV Family tent have the walls stitched in to the floor so you won't be able to create one big space inside the tent. There are three separate rooms, with a removable drop divider in the right-hand bedroom. You should be able to comfortably fit 2-3 stretchers in each room depending on the stretchers themselves, and the configuration. One thing to be aware of is the angle of the walls, the stretchers may touch the sides if they are oriented side to side.
At almost 40kg it seems very heavy to bring up and down from the car. Is the weight a signal to its stability?
G'day Angie,
The Montana 12 Family Tent is weighty and very sturdy. Generally, we suggest with any tent to peg out all of your guy ropes to provide the tent with as much stability as you can but I spoke with a colleague who has personal experience this tent and they confirmed the tent is pretty hardy and will stand up to most weather scenarios.
They seem so similar. Montana is a little bigger but not significantly. What is the better tent? What are the main differences?
G'day Louise,
The Coleman Chalet 9CV and Montana 12CV are both
Hi, how well does this tent stand up to strong winds. Where we go we can get strong southerly winds that can be constant for a day or so.
G'day Tom,
Coleman doesn't specifically make a claim regarding wind ratings on the Montana 12 CV Family Tent. We'd generally suggest with any tent to peg out all of your guy ropes to provide the tent with as much stability as you can. Based on personal experience this tent is pretty hardy and will stand up to most weather scenarios. If you can block the southerly with a vehicle or similar that would also help to ensure the tent is kept safe.
I have a Montana 12cv already that is almost 10 years old. It is showing its age so Im looking to replace it. I have concerns about the durability of the instant up tent though due to a number of bad reviews about broken poles. Which do you recommend? Durability is my main concern followed by convenience and then size/weight when packed down.
G'day Steffan,
Thanks for getting in touch. The Montana 12 CV and the Instant Up Northstar Darkroom 10P are both great options. Based on anecdotal feedback and reviews on the Northstar Darkroom there are occasional issues with the plastic elbow joints on the poles, Coleman
Hi, Is there a specific ground sheet or tarp I could buy with the Montana 12 to protect the floor?
G'day James,
Coleman doesn't make a specific groundsheet for the Montana tent. We normally recommend people look at the Oztrail Ultramesh Tarp, and you'd need something around the size of the 12x20ft option with this tent. Have a read of our blog on selecting a groundsheet for a few pointers in making sure you grab the right size and type for your needs.
Hi there are all the fly screens able to be zipped up and closed to help stop dust entering and cold air etc? I really want a 8-12 person tent that has all screens able to be zipped shut and not just covered via a fly.
G'day Tiff,
Yes, the internal windows and doors are double layered (mesh and solid layer) so will provide a dust barrier.
Hi. I noticed that the Montana has a zippered section to place a fan. Just wondering what the best usb rechargeable fan would be and would this be enough to keep the tent noticeably cooler
That port was originally designed for a fan that seems almost impossible to get nowadays, Pete. I have a feeling the fan has been discontinued but the fan port remained in the tents. Essentially it is just another point for ventilation and you would only be able to stand a fan in front of it now. If you want USB rechargeable, then check out the Aero Breeze 17cm Fan and the Rechargeable Tent Fan from Companion.
As for whether they will keep the tent cooler, any ventilation is going to help, but there isn't a lot of insulation in a tent so if the sun is bearing down on the top then the radiant heat is probably going to outweigh the airflow. Your best bet is to set the tent up in a shady spot and use all the vents combine with a fan to make the most of both natural and man-made breeze to keep your tent as comfortable as possible.
what are the measurements inside the tent? how big are the individual rooms
G'day Kelly.
I've just double checked with Coleman and the middle room in 2.3m x 3m, and then the side rooms are 2.1m x 3m.
Hi, I wanted to find out if there would be enough space to fit a double height queen bed in the end rooms?
G'day Claire,
Great question, normally I would try this one out for you but I don't have a Montana up to be able to try it. I'm fairly certain you'll be fine to fit the Queen Double High mattress in the end room though as I have a sneaking suspicion we used to have one up in our display model Montana a few years ago.
Hello I'm not so fussed about the dark features of the Northstar I just want a tent that would comfortably fit 5 stretchers in it. We have the Coleman instant 8 person and that really only fits in 3 stretchers comfortably
G'day Jacinta,
You should be fine in either of these tents, but the Coleman Montana 12 CV Family Tent will have more internal space so would probably my choice
Hi, We are considering to buy a family tent which should accommodate at least 6 people. We have stayed in boab geo (6+2) and coleman instant tent earlier, but very new to the Montana Series. We are also considering Coleman's Northstar darkroom and weather master. Any suggestions on which is the best buy based on sturdiness and space?
G'day Sona,
Whether you go for the Coleman Montana 12 CV Family Tent or either the Instant Up Northstar or Weathermaster, you'll be happy with the amount of space all 3 provide. The Montana is probably the most sturdy of the 3 but also takes the longest amount of time to set up. The Instant Up will be the quickest to set up and will be the darkest inside if sleeping in is an important aspect for you. The Weathermaster will have the most bells and whistles, and will probably take a similar amount of time to set up as the Montana.
Is this tent an instant up tent
G'day Shane,
The Coleman Montana 12 CV Family Tent isn't an instant up tent, no. It would take a good half an hour to get it set up compared to 10-15 minutes for a Coleman Instant Up Tent.
I am setting up and I need to know dimensions
G'day Joel,
To give yourself enough room to easily put up your Coleman Montana 12 CV Family Tent, I'd suggest you'd want a space of land about 8.5 x 5.5 m. That should give you enough space to get the tent up, along with guy ropes and the like.
Does this tent have enough ventilation to stop condensation inside when housing 6 people?
G'day Colin,
Most of the time, you'll have no worries with having enough ventilation inside the Coleman Montana 12 CV Family Tent. On those rare nights where conditions are perfect and you're battling a bit with condensation, then I'd suggest opening up a window or two to increase airflow and this should solve any issues you're having.
Ours is probably about 7 years old, and needs a new fly and one yellow fibreglass pole. Can you supply these parts? Especially interested to see if the newer fly would fit on the older model.
G'day Deborah,
From time to time we can get our hands on different spare parts from older models of tents but we can't always get them. Feel free to give us a buzz on 1300 914 007 and our customer service team can give you a hand with trying to track some down.
My friend has the chalet 9 and their floor is showing wear. Is the floor tougher in the Montana than the chalet?
How long on average does this take to erect?
I know you have answered this for the other large Coleman styles (9 dome and 10 instant pop up) vs Brompton 3 room. just curious as to your opinion on the comparison of these two? Also is there much comparison in the packed sizes? will they still fit int he boot of the car? family of 5 (3 boys under 10).
I have a coleman montana 12 cv family tent and I'm in need of a complete new fly for it .can you surply this and provide a price aswell
