Even plusher than the iconic original, the Swiss-designed MegaMat Max 15 Duo LW+ from Exped provides another level of camping comfort for two.
Providing 50% more thickness than the original MegaMat, the Max 15 Duo has 15cm of air-core channel foam to cradle your whole body. It has a 50 denier stretch top fabric with 3D constructed vertical sidewalls that gives you comfort right to the edges of the mat, just like your own bed at home. With an R-Value of 10.6, this mat provides serious insulation to keep you cosier when sleeping in cold conditions. The Max 15 Duo is easy to inflate and deflate as it has an extra-large valve, and it comes with a top-loading stuff sack so that you can carry it over your shoulder and transport it with ease.
Finished off with a repair kit, mini pump for top-ups, and backed by a 5-year warranty - the MegaMat Max 15 Duo LW+ from Exped is a luxurious addition to your sleeping set up.
Can you keep this in your roof top tent but just deflate it nearly completely so it comes down to around 100 thickness so we can just leave it in when we close the hard shell lid
G'day Kaye,
All self-inflating mat brands have advised us that their mats are not to be kept inside a packed roof top tent of any kind.
There have been a few warranty issues on mats used in roof tops that brands haven't covered, for this reason. Even if the mat remains flat, it can be subject to large temperature fluctuations in a roof top tent over the course of the year which can effect the glue and bondings on the foam.
Ofcourse you can use it in your roof top tent, but we'd strongly advise not leaving it in there for pack up.
Is the stuff sack waterproof? Was hoping to put this on my roof racks but dont want to ruin the mat if it rains!
G'day Liam,
Its not waterproof, no. If you're putting it on your roof racks we'd recommend using a waterproof bag like the Darche Nero rolltop 120, or wrapping it well in a tarp.
Is there a difference in the amount of bounce between a MegaMat Duo and a MegaMat Max 15 Duo. My wife is a light sleeper and is sensitive to partner movement.
G'day Neal,
You'll get more bounce the more air you put into the mat. Most people who get the Duo find they have to pump a bit of extra air into it for the best firmness with 2 sleepers, and as a result there can be a little bounce.
I'd say the 15 Duo may be the better option being thicker, you'll likely be able to get the right comfort without having to add too much additional air.
is this suitable to leave permanently in a bush company rooftop tent(clamshell)
G'day Matt,
No, its not. All self-inflating mat brands have advised us that their mats are not to be kept inside a packed roof top tent of any kind.
There have been a few warranty issues on mats that brands haven't covered for this reason. Even if the mat remains flat, it can be subject to large temperature fluctuations in a roof top tent over the course of the year which can effect the glue and bondings on the foam.
Ofcourse you can use it in your roof top tent, but we'd advise removing it for pack up.
Hi Presumably you have to fold this mat in half lengthways to pack it away in its bag, given it is 132cm wide but packs up to only 75cmW. Is this right?
G'day Nina,
Yep, thats correct - you'll need to ensure all the air is compressed out or pushed out of the mat before you fold and roll it up.
If there's any air left in it at all when you fold it, it gets a bit tricky.
Could you please recommend any double/twin camper stretchers that would suit the Exped Duo mats? We have a Coleman 4P dark tent so Queen size stretchers are a tight squeeze. Thank you
G'day Mariah,
The Coleman 4P is quite small for stretcher use - the best chance you'll probably have is the Zempire Z Leg Twin Stretcher.
Depending on the stretcher height, on average you'd probably loose around 25cm of space, meaning you'll need an option that is 2m or less long.
Hope that helps!
Good afternoon team, In terms of comfort, is the Exped a decent upgrade from the Oztrail FatMat? Cheers. Shella.
G'day Sheila,
Comfort is relative to the individual, so it's not possible for us to say which one you would find more comfortable.
The Exped is the rolls royce of camp mats and sits at the top of scale in terms or materials and design quality, which is reflected by their commitment to a 5 year warranty.
We haven't had the Oztrail mats for very long, so there's no real long term feedback there, but reviews have been positive so far.
Hey there, what is the thickness of the mat when deflated? I’m planning on replacing the mattress in the swag with something like this and just wanted to know how much extra bulk it’ll create.
G'day Blake,
We dont have a thickness for you sorry, it very much depends on the individual using it and how effectively they can compress all the air out.
For your reference though we have feedback from loads and loads of customers who replace swag mattresses with these Exped ones. the 10cm thick mattress actually packs up smaller generally that the swag does with its original mattress in.
I'm assuming the 15cm one would be no worse than the original swag size.
its best to pull the mattress out and deflate as much as possible before putting it back into the swag to roll up, that will give you the most compressed possible state.
Is there any pump that can help with deflating this mattress? Unfortunately Widget Inflation Pump doesn't help. Are there other self inflating mats that can be deflated with a pump? Thanks!
There's nothing specifically designed to deflate a self-inflating mat, BB, at least that I;m aware of. I guess you could use the deflate option on regular airbed mats but the pump will have to work hard to compress all the foam inside the mat. Self-inflating mats really need your body weight to deflate, we have a video her on how to do it, hope it helps - https://youtu.be/SvJYkyWdEZ0.
Will the 15 Duo be too high for a Kamprite double? We've used a cheaper 10cm thick mattress with no issue before, so I know a 10 Duo would work ok. Just want to know whether I can increase comfort with the 15 Duo if it fits Thanks in advance!
G'day Hilton,
We don't have a Kamprite double on display so can check in real life for you, but I can't see any problem from a footprint perspective. The only thing to consider would be the sharp taper on the end walls, and whether or not the higher mattress would be pushing on the tent wall.
Looking at the dimensions of both though, the tent itself has a bit more length in it, so it shouldn't really be a problem.
Could this replace a caravan mattress and used for up to three months continuously
G'day Jenny,
There's absolutely no reason we can think of why you couldn't. I am aware that some people have used these as a mattress at home between living situations, etc, and there's been no issues there.
Can I fit 2 side by side a RV5?
G'day Rys,
No, you cant without the outside edges being squished in - which could be a detriment to your mats on longer trips.
The floorspace measurement is slightly too narrow to begin with, but also doesn't account for the internal tent frame.
You probably realistically have about 245cm of functional clear width.
Hope that helps.
We have the Exped Megamat Max 15 Duo mattress. We want to get a stretcher to use with it, but none of the available stretchers are quite the right size. They're either too tall & wide (Oztrail & Kamper) or too narrow (Zempire). What would be worse - too wide a double stretcher (would we be sleeping on slopes if the mattress doesn't go all the way to the edges?), or too short a stretcher (with the mattress hanging a few cm unsupported at head & foot)? Thank you!
G'day Jacqui,
I think having a stretcher that is on the narrower side would be a better option, as you know the mattress will be fully supported by the stretcher frame to each side.
Generally with the doubles, I think it's a better bet to have a slightly smaller stretcher. It's just my personal preference with what I think is more comfortable, and think the Zempire would be a great choice.
Update! We now have the Darche XL 1400 available for pre-order with no centre bar, perfect for swags and larger mattresses!
What size fitted sheet you recommend for Megamat 15?
G'day Manoj,
The dimensions of the EXPED MegaMat 15 Duo LW most closely resemble a standard double mattress.
That would be the best sheet size to run with if you're wanting to use standard bed linen.
can i leave it inflated or deflated in a cub camper trailer excellent video and advice as always
G'day Shaun,
We wouldn't recommend permanently leaving the MegaMat Max 15 in your camper trailer as folding up the trailer may cause damage to the mattress. We'd recommend deflating the mat and storing it in the supplied bag for transit.
Are these OK to sit on the edges? I'm thinking about real world usage. A 6 inch high mat will inevitably get sat on the edge (putting shoes on etc, rainy days). Would be an awful shame to deform the edge or void the warranty.
G'day Craig,
This shouldn't cause any problems, the internal foam, and external fabric have a degree of stretch, and will bounce back from being sat on, rolled, slept on etc without a worry.
Could I leave this deflated in our Darche Nebula swag and roll it up with the swag instead of the standard foam matress. It would be heaps easier than packing away into a separate bag
G'day James,
The EXPED MegaMat Max 15 Duo LW is a bonded mat, so there's no problems storing this rolled up. The only consideration maybe the extra bulk it will add to your packed swag. We haven't tried it out ourselves, so can't say for sure if it will still fit the swag bag.
I don’t like sleeping hot, my other mats make me wake up in a pool of sweat, my camping is mostly in northern Australia, what would this be like? All air mattresses aren’t robust enough
G'day Richard,
The Megamat Max has a pretty high R-value, so you might find it's a little warm in northern Australia. It would be worth having a look at the Sea to Summit Comfort DLX SI, they have a slightly lower R-value so it might be a slightly better option in warmer conditions.
I am purchasing a Dakota 1400 RTT could the exped 15 be left in the RTT deflated of coarse when packing up the RTT
G'day Darren,
Unfortunately, you won't be able to leave your MegaMat Max 15 set up inside a rooftop tent without risking damage to it. We would recommend packing the mat up each time you pack away the tent.
I saw a review elsewhere on the internet saying that the actual dimensions of this mattress were more like 203cm x 145cm (80in x 57in) than the 197cm x 132cm quoted in the manufacturer's specs. Could you please confirm the actual dimensions, maybe by measuring a display model? I'd like to make sure it's going to fit where we need it to fit.
G'day Phil,
I've just measured our display and can confirm that the in-use dimensions are correct at 197 x 132cm.
What is the max weight for this mattress as I am about as heavy as a Sasquatch (150kg).
G'day Graham,
Exped doesn't specify a maximum weight limit for their mattresses, however, we regularly have people buy these mats who are similar weight, and will often be sharing with another person, with no worries.
I have a duo and am looking at purchasing another for the family camping trip in the new year. I love my duo its the best nights sleep camping have ever had. I will hold out purchasing until I see a comparison. Cheers
G'day Joanne,
Thanks so much for giving us your feedback on what videos you'd like to see from us. I've got in touch with the videography team and they've said that it's definitely on the list, though they can't give me a timeframe unfortunately. I know it's a bit frustrating, but thanks for your patience.
Can you please do a comparison with the Exped Max 10 Duo? Be great to see them side by side and their comparative packed size before making a purchasing decision thanks..
G'day Alex,
Thanks for getting in touch, the Megamat Max 15 Duo is brand new to us, so we'll ask the video team to pop it on their list. Feel free to give us a call and we can chat through the features. They're pretty similar, with the Max 15 being thicker, and having a higher R-value.
