The fitting on the end of the air hose fits a standard Schrader tyre valve. It also comes with a needle for inflating sporting balls, and two small gauge open fittings that can fit into kids' pool toys etc.
The flow rate appears quite low when compared to other brands which are claimed around 160l/min for single cylinder units. Is your spec at free air or under what psi?

Most of the other brands on the same par as Bushranger have a similar 65-72 Lpm Free Air flow rate. There are some ones around that have higher free air flow rate - eg Anaconda's home brand Dune, and Kings, etc. From our experience they tend to have a mismatched motor - under PSI the flow rate drops quite significantly, and the unit gets quite hot.
On the Bushranger, the flow rate will drop, but barely in comparison. Generally despite the lower FAD (which doesnt actually mean much at all) they'll pump up 4 tyres quicker than alternatives that claim higher Lpm.

Can this also be used to deflate tyres to a set point?

Not to a predetermined PSI, but there is a deflate button on the compressor trigger - you'll be able to use that to manually deflate your tyres.
Just wondering how long this would likely take to inflate from 20psi to 40psi, I'm running 285/70/r17.

We can't give an answer on that one without knowing your tyre volume & doing a bunch of tricky maths....BUT we have had feedback from a customer with slightly smaller tyres than yours, who went from 18-40PSI in under 2 minutes. Hopefully that gives you abit of a rough guide!
Could this be used to pump up and air mattress? (ie. without popping it, obviously it could fill it). Would be a benefit if carrying this meant no need for separate air bed pump.

This doesn't have attachments for mattresses but I'm sure you could work out a DIY fix.
The only issue, as you have mentioned, is accidental inflation which could damage your mattress, either bursting or separating internal chamber seams.
If you are careful, and do not leave it inflating unattended, you should be ok.
Can this be run off a battery box/ciggerate lighter or does it need to be connected directly to the battery?

The Max Air III Compressor requires 28A to run, which you will 100% not get through a 12v cigarette output without blowing a fuse, as they're usually rated to 10-15A.
If your Battery Box has an Anderson output you could use that, as they're often rated 30-50A. The cable is fixed though, so you wouldn't be able to swap it out for a different cable, you'd need to modify it a retrofit an Anderson terminal on the end.
Be aware that a modification like this may void your warranty, so you could even try contacting Bushmans for more advice.
