Not all campers are early morning risers. Thanks to the genius fly on the Instant Up Gold 4PV Dark Room Tent from Coleman, you can sleep through the dazzling sunlight and get some serious shut-eye on your outdoor adventures.
This tent has a special coating on the rainfly which blocks out 95% of light and reduces the heat in your tent by up to 5°. Set up is easy: simply lay the tent down, spread the fabric out, extend the poles until they lock into place, then throw the fly over, peg it out - and you’re ready to roll!
The front features a vestibule which helps add to your living space, and you can also pitch out the two-pole awning at the front of the tent for extra shade. You won’t lose your devices amongst the rest of your stash as the Instant Up Dark Room Tent features interior organisers, and a storage hammock.
The Instant-Up Gold 4PV Dark Room Tent features a durable polyoxford floor PVC floor for toughness, and a 3000mm waterhead rated fly to keep off a drizzle. This tent also has ventilation covered thanks to the ultrafine mesh and the Coleman Circle Ventilation system.
Best of all, even on a bright summer night, you can get the kids to bed quick smart as the tent will be dark – giving the illusion of bedtime. For a restful sleep on your next camping adventure, the Instant Up Gold 4PV Dark Room won’t let you down.
What's the dimensions of the bag with tent, poles etc packed in it?
G'day Matilda,
The packed dimensions of the Gold 4PV tent with all items in the bag are: 114L x 25W x 25H cm
Is the tent waterproof like the fly?
G'day Natalie,
The tent body itself and floor don't have a specified waterproof rating. The tent is made from polyester so isn't water-resistant or waterproof. The floor material is heavy-duty 420D Polyoxford PVC which is largely water-resistant but doesn't have a specific waterhead rating.
I have been looking closely at your videos (thanks for them they help a lot) but I am confused how the vestibule uprights use the pin and ring at the ground level.
G'day Peter,
Our Features & SetUp video shows how the vestibule pole is attached using the ring and pin, check it out between the two and three-minute mark. The straight upright awning poles with the spigot on them are to use when the front is open as an extra undercover space, have a look between the six and seven-minute mark for this one. If you have a tent and are struggling to set it up, feel free to email us some photos of the poles that are confusing and we'll do our best to advise.
In the "Feature & Setup" video, OZtrail Ultramesh Tarp of 8 x 12ft size is used. The tent is setup without having to peg through the groundsheet. If I rather choose size 8 x 16ft, will i need to peg through the groundsheet or can I possibly setup the tent without having to peg through the groundsheet ? I am considering the bigger option to have more are covered on ground.
G'day Zee,
You can certainly go for the 8 x 16ft Ultramesh Tarp with the Instant Up Gold 4PV Darkroom. You can peg through these tarps with a little bit of suggestion, we would suggest setting it up in the same orientation each time so the pegs go through the same hole each time.
In the "Feature & Setup" video, what ground sheet is used ? What is its size ?
G'day Zee,
I've double checked with Ben, who is featured in the video promoting the features and set up for the Coleman Instant Up Gold 4PV Dark Room Tent and he says the tarp is the OZtrail Ultramesh Tarp 8 x 12ft.
Heading to Cape York. tent definitely has to be sandfly proof. Is Black Wolf next best best option if Coleman mesh not suitable
G'day Mike,
Coleman doesn't give a specific claim in regard to the Instant Up Gold 4PV Dark Room mesh. What we do know is that it's an Ultra-fine mesh so should do a fairly good job of keeping the sandflies out.
Hi will the oz trail deluxe bunks fit in here? With another single air mattress?
G'day Rachael,
We've just checked and we're pretty confident you'll fit the Oztrail Deluxe Bunks and a single mattress inside the Instant Up Gold 4PV tent. The Bunks will need to be somewhat centralised so they're not touching on the tapered side of the wall. You should still have a little bit of extra space to spare though.
Hi Snowys! Love that this dark room tent will be cooler in summer. But does that mean it will also be colder in winter? Thank you.
G'day Matt,
It's hard to say with 100% certainty whether the Dark Room 4PV will be cooler in winter or not. I'd dare say you won't get quite the same warming effect during the day as the non-Dark Room style tents, however, I think the difference would be negligible.
We're going camping, two adults and a five year old, and we're tossing up between this one and the 6P Gold. We can't look at the 6PV Dark Room as the footprint is too big. Which would you recommend? This one appeals because of the dark room element, being cooler and not letting light in for the little guy. The 6P appeals for the internal size. Can three fit comfortably in this one? Does the dark room make enough difference to make the size trade off worth it? Your advice would be much appreciated.
G'day Richard,
Either the Instant Up GOld 4PV or the Instant Up Gold 6P should be fine. I can definitely advocate for the Darkroom version as they are great with young kids heading to bed early during daylight savings! If it's just two adults and the five-year-old then the 4PV should be fine.
Hey guys. Just wondering how sturdy this tent is and how well it'll stand up to wind? I'm essentially trying to choose between this Coleman and the Blackwolf Tuff Dome. Essentially I prefer the Coleman due to the dark room technology and the fact that you can fully enclose the inner tent (concerned with drafts between the fly and tent leaking inside in cold weather with the Tough Dome, given you can't close the inner windows), but I'm equally worried the Coleman won't stand up to use in windy conditions (I'm often camping in valleys in the mountains and by the coast). Many thanks
G'day Tim,
That's a tough one to answer as 'sturdiness' is fairly subjective. Certainly, the Coleman Instant Up tents have steeper, flatter walls than a Tuff Dome so they will tend to catch the wind a bit more. Having said that Coleman does carry out wind testing on their tents and are pretty confident in them. Personally, I'd say the other advantage of the Tuff Dome pole system is it's fairly easy to carry some generic spares and repair it in the field, whereas the Coleman poles will need specific parts if the wind does manage to do any damage. Either way, make sure you guy the tent down thoroughly even if you're not expecting nasty weather. It's easier to do it now than in the middle of the night when it unexpectedly turns bad.
I don't know if you can answer this, sorry. If I separately bag the fly / tent / detachable poles in 3 separate bags, how heavy is the heaviest bag (presumably the main tent bag)?
Hi Lisa, this isn't an easy one to answer, I don't have the information in front of me without pulling out and separating everything from one of the boxes. I'll do my best to estimate the weights for you though.
The total tent weight is 16.8 Kg (let's just say 17 Kg to make the math easy). The inner tent and main frame are going to account for about 70% of this weight (and space) which works out to about 12 Kg. This leaves the two awning poles at around 1 Kg, the flysheet at about 1-2 Kg and the tent pegs being the smallest (but densest) package at about 2kg.
Hopefully, this helps, sorry I couldn't be more specific.
Does the Instant Up Gold 4PV Dark Room Tent come in any other colours? The khaki and brown looks very military!
G'day Deb,
Unfortunately, the Coleman Instant Up Gold 4PV Dark Room only comes in the khaki and brown colour I'm sorry to say.
What's the difference between the Instant Up Gold 4PV Dark Room Tent and the Instant Up 4PV Dark Room Tent ? Thank you
G'day Deb,
The Coleman Instant Up 4PV Dark Room Tent is similar to the Instant Up Gold 4PV Dark Room Tent in that it has the "dark room" feature but beyond that, they are two very different tents. The Gold has twice the waterproof rating, has stronger poles and has a vestibule, which the other doesn't have.
Does the Instant Up Gold 4PV Dark Room Tent have the option of a second (side) awning like the Instant Up Gold 4P Tent? Really struggling to weigh up the benefit of the dark room temperature control with the additional shade offered by the other model with the second awning.
G'day Grace,
I've just confirmed with one of my team members who has set this tent up, and the Instant Up Gold 4PV Dark Room does not come with a detachable side awning like the Instant Up Gold 4P.
If you would prefer the extra side awning to the heat and light reducing properties of the Dark Room Fly, then it sounds like the original Instant Up Gold 4P is your best bet!
The specs give the sleeping area but not the external dimensions. Would you have them? (Also for the 6 person version)
G'day Siobhan,
The dimensions of the Coleman Instant Up Gold Dark Room 4P are 2.4L x 2.4W m plus an additional 1.5m for the vestibule.
The dimensions of the Coleman Instant Up Gold Dark Room 6P are 3.3L x 2.7W m plus an additional 1.5m for the vestibule.
G'day Siobhan,
Happy to clarify - the 6P will be 3.3m with the addition of 1.5m for the awning.
They mention it will attach to a Coleman gazebo, what models will it attach to?
G'day Stuart,
The hook and loop strip system on the Coleman Instant Up Gold 4PV Dark Room Tent can attach to any of the Coleman Deluxe Gazebo range.
What size groundsheet would suit this tent. Mark
G'day Mark,
We haven’t yet been able to independently measure the Coleman Instant Up 4PV tent, but according to info provided by Coleman – the external dimensions of this tent are 2.4 x 2.4 ( 1.5m vestibule).
For a groundsheet, the Ultramesh Tarp is a solid choice. And as for size – it looks like the 2.44 x 4.88m should be the best size to cover the whole area which you can check out here.
