The large is rated to 50Kg, so from a weight perspective he'd be fine on that size - so the decision would just come down to the physical size of the bed.
I'd just recommend maybe getting some masking tape or chalk, and drawing out the size of the bed based on our dimensions online, and seeing how your doggo fits within each space.  That'd be the second best option to trying out in real life.
You can also check out the product reviews for the large bed, and filter by photos that people have submitted - from memory there's a few Shepherds there, which may be helpful!

The fleece mat doesn't come with a carry bag, nor does it fit into the storage bag that comes with the bed.
You could consider something like the Action Chair Bag which will fit both together.

No unfortunately, but the mattress pad as a whole does have the ability to be cold hand washed when required.

I've just opened one up to have a look at the care instructions and yes, they are machine washable!  They recommend using a front loader only on a delicate cycle with cold water and mild detergent.  Cheers :)
