Safely take the chill off the air in your small tent, swag or rooftop tent with the Ducted Camping Heater from Gasmate.
Ideally suited for 2-3 person sleeping spaces, you'll make the most of this heater by firing it up a little while before you bed down for the night so you've got a warm space to fall asleep in! This unit is designed with three safety features – an oxygen depletion system which switches it off at low oxygen levels, a safety tip-over switch which stops the gas supply if it gets knocked over, and a flame failure safety system that shuts the gas off if the flame goes out. It’s cleverly designed with a built-in storage compartment for the ducting pipe, charging cord and regulator and it has a carry handle for easy transport.
When the rechargeable sealed battery is fully charged, it will also provide up to 5 hours of battery life. Certified to Australian and New Zealand standards, the Ducted Camping Heater from Gasmate will help make your sleeping quarters a little more comfortable in the great outdoors
does the heater work thermostatically so when room temp drops it will fire up
G'day George,
No, the unit won't fire once the temperature drops below a certain point. However, once the maximum outlet temperature (58'C) is reached the burner extinguishes.
Do you have a power converter to charge the unit up for the USA users?
G'day George,
At this point in time we only ship within Australia, but if you do manage to get your hands on one of these units then you can use a power adapter to get the plug to match a USA outlet.
Is cartridge refillable can you use bigger gas cylinder
G'day Alan,
The Ducted Heater doesn't come with gas cartridges, but you can pick them up at most local camping/hardware stores, they are single-use, and not refillable. If you'd prefer to run the unit from a larger refillable LPG bottle that has a POL fitting, then you can use the hose found in the "you might also like" section to do this.
Looking for something other than a diesel heater.
G'day Dianne,
The Ducted Camping Heater could be used in a caravan, however the unit most be well ventialted and outside of the van. You can use the piping to push the warm air into the caravan. They're really designed to warm small spaces like rooftop tents and tents, so you may find they don't quite cut it in a caravan.
Can the unit be connected to another 12 volt source like an auxiliary battery so it will run for more than 5 hours? (together with an LPG cylinder)
G'day Martin,
The Ducted Heater will only run from the internal battery, which is rechargeable. It can't be run from a fixed 12V source.
Where can you buy the ducts from.
G'day Mario,
The ducting comes with the unit itself. If you're seeking some replacements feel free to flick us an email (service@snowys.com.au) and we'll see what we can find out from Gasmat.
Does this only operate if the battery is charged or can you run it if connected to 12V indefinitely/until the gas runs out Also is there a temperature control
G'day Richard,
The Ducted Camping Heater only works from the battery, so you'd need to charge it for 5-6 hours, then you get approximately 5 hours of use. There isn't a temperature control on the unit however once the unit reaches the maximum temperature at the outlet it will cut out.
Hi, I was just wondering how the heater works when the weather is not so friendly. Is the unit weatherproof or would it need some shelter?
G'day Megz,
I've just given the Gasmate team a buzz to confirm for you as there is no IPX rating on the product, and they've said that this heater can likely withstand a very light spatter of rain and wind, but will not be suitable in a strong direct breeze or rainy conditions. For more detail on safe places to use your appliance, check out the last page of the user manual here. Hope that helps Megz.
WIth an Oztent RV5 setup of main tent middle "room" and tagalong, would it be ok to use this heater if the unit sat near the door in the middle room with the main door/panel open. If not ideal is the unit robust enough to be outside with a little fly and raised in poor weather?
G'day Adam,
Gas appliances really aren't something you want to take risks with so it's not really something we'd be comfortable recommending. The unit is designed for outdoor use only, and should only be used in well-ventilated areas. The Instruction Manual outlines what type of spaces you can use the unit in, so it would be worth having a look at that too. The unit can be used outdoors, however it should be used in a weather-protected spot, so if you're using your RV tent without side panels, you could put the unit under the awning area connecting the tent and tagalong, however, we wouldn't recommend putting it in this space with side panels set up.
Hey guys! I have a turbo 240 with the mesh awning kit. Would it be safe to store this unit, along with the gas bottle under my awning and run the hot pipe into the canvas tent?
G'day Jason,
Based on your description I think this should be fine, the main requirement is to position the unit in a weather-protected and well-ventilated space. The unit will switch off if oxygen levels are too low, but in the front awning, it should be fine.
If we place the main unit outside the tent and the hose within the tent - is this safe to use?
G'day Victoria,
Absolutely! Thats the fantastic thing about this heating unit, with the combustion component outside and the heat being ducted into your tent, its definately a safe way to go.
Hi Guys, can you please suggest an LPG hose which you stock for this unit. Wanting to connect it to a 9kg bottle on those longer stays. Thanks
G'day Matt,
We've done some testing here and we can confirm that the Ducted Camping Heater can be run from a 9kg bottle using the Coleman BOM Hose or the Companion Hose Kit POL-BOM. One suggestion that we'd make is to make sure you tighten the hose fitting to the regulator so it is quite firm and engages the gas release pin.
If it will stand up underneath is it safe to do this or does it get too hot?
G'day Christine,
As long as the area under your camper trailer is quite open and well ventilated, I dont see an issue sheltering the main unit there.
Will this heat my jayco hawk if I duct piping in and what temps would I see in the van on a 0 deg night?
G'day Paul,
You can definately duct into your Jayco Hawk, as to the tempertaures you'll get, there are too many variables!
Gasmate have advised that the output temperature measured at the outlet is 58*c, tested at an ambient temp of 15*c, but as this is a new unit and we havent had a chance to gain customer feedback or put it through its paces for ourselves, we can't advise you further than that.
Is the battery powering the ignition as well as a fan to output the heat? If free camping does that mean I am only looking at 5 hours total run time before needing to recharge?
G'day Matt,
That's correct. The battery powers the fan and ignition so you will only get 5-6 hours of run time before needing to charge the unit again. You also cannot run the Gasmate Ducted Camping Heater whilst it is charging.
Wondering if you can lower the air flow or is it set?
G'day Jainee,
Unfortunately, you can't regulate the airflow as the unit comes with just the one speed.
Hi whats the output of the 240v charger? Eg:12vdc 5amp ? Can you run the unit while it's charging.
G'day Andre,
The output of the 240v charger is 14Vdc 500mA.
No, you cannot run the Gasmate Ducted Camping Heater whilst it is charging. The isolator switch on the front of the unit needs to be set to 'charge' OR 'run'.
Hope that helps!
What is the IP rating of the unit, can it be left out in the rain?
G'day Bob,
Theres no IP rating on this unit, it cannot be left in the rain.
Wondering if 240v is the only way to charge this or can you charge/run using 12v??
G'day Janelle,
It seems you can, but just as a disclaimer, nowhere in the documentation does it say that you can.
We hooked it up to a portable power pack that read 12.8V on the voltmeter using a standard cigarette to 12V pin cable and the red light blinked as though it was taking charge. I don't know how long this would take to charge, and it would probably never reach full charge, but it seems to work.
To match the existing charger you would need a step up transformer to match the 14V, or you'd need an inverter if you want to use the original 240v cable that comes with the Gasmate Ducted Camping Heater.
Hope that helps!
