I've just had a look at the display model, and the Explore Planet Earth Dash Table in Large doesn't have holes in the extendable leg, when you tighten the screw it puts pressure on the leg which is what keeps it in place.
As for its sturdiness, this table has a weight rating of 30kg, so if it's going to get roughed by kids you might want to consider a table with a higher weight rating for stability like the Coleman Folding Table and Bench Set, which has a rated capacity of 200kg.
