Make setting up your sleeping quarters super easy when you’re travelling on the road, with the Dakota 1400 Series 4 Roof Top Tent from 23ZERO.
The Dakota features 23ZERO’s Light Suppression Technology (LST) which is a dark coating on the inner walls of the tent that diffuses sunlight to keep your shelter darker in the mornings and the temperature cooler on warm days. This tent is made from durable ECO13B 100% certified recycled 900D Polyester Oxford with fine PVC coated insect mesh, a round alloy telescopic ladder, and a 25mm aluminium internal frame which pivots on a stainless-steel yoke – so it’s made to be sturdy. You’ll sleep like a baby on the 65mm open cell mattress in this RTT, which also has a polycotton mattress cover to help keep it clean.
The zip down sky roof allows you to view the night sky, the full-width side windows and side vents provide plenty of airflow, and the 210D poly ripstop fly helps to prevent condensation. When it’s time to hit the road, this rooftop tent packs away into a 600gsm PVC transit cover with D ring compression straps. Enjoy a simple, comfortable and light diffused shelter on your vehicle with the Dakota 1400 from 23ZERO.
So you know if 23zero make a 1600mm drop annex for the series 4 Dakota tents?
G'day Adam,
As far as we know 23Zero don't have one in the pipeline for the 1400 tents. It might be worth reaching out to them directly for options for a 1600mm drop in the future.
Sleeping area stated on specifications is 140cm. Diagram shows 133cm. Can you please confirm which one is correct?
G'day Michael,
The physical internal measurement of the sleeping area is 133cm to account for some of the internal framework.
The overall width of the Dakota 1400 is 140cm
hi there! I'm wondering if you can safely strap surfboards on top of this rooftop tent? Obviously so long as the weight is fine - is there functionality to strap more to the roof as well as the tent?
G'day Jemimah,
There's no functionality to strap cargo to the roof top tent, so whatever you use you'll have to cover all the fixings, and make sure it's anchored adequately to your roof racks.
A common option is to look at soft racks like these which are easily removable when you want to set up the roof top tent.
You'd place the racks ontop of the tent, run the straps down the sides and anchor to your roof racks.
The surfboards can be anchored to the soft racks via the webbing loops provided.
Hi what’s the dimension for mounting plate which comes with 1400 series.will be fit onto rhino pioneer 6 platform with slate width approx 110mm
G'day Max,
The plates are 120mm wide with the bolt holes being 100mm appart, centre to centre.
If you want to mount your roof top tent to a Pioneer Platform, you need either the Rhino Rack Roof Top Tent bracket Kit - 61014, or the Extended Sized Mounting Plates from 23Zero.
Hi. If putting onto a rack on top of dual cab cabin - with a canopy on back of dual cab - how is the zipper opened?
G'day Kylie,
I'm not quite 100% clear on the question, sorry!
Generally people with roof top tents will have a door step, or a wheel step, or some other way of accessing the roof top tent mounted on top of their vehicle for set up and pack away.
I'm assuming you're referring to the zipper of the tent cover? In that case, if mounted to the cabin roof, you'd probably open the ute doors an use the instep or seats to access the zipper if you dont have a step handy.
Let me know if we've got your question wrong.
Hi Lauren. Meaning - if we mount on the roof of the dual can but have a canopy on also / how do we undo the zipper where it’s over the canopy? I’m assuming a small rope attached would do and enable to reach from one side to the other. Thank you
Ah yep, I see what you mean.
A small piece of parachord or something would certainly do the trick.
You might find tag teaming with a person on each side, standing on the back seats for leverage, might cover you.
You could even use a caribeaner if you wanted a larger finger pull type attachment on the zip aswell.
How do you attach the tent base to the pioneer rack if you don’t use cross bars?
G'day Paul,
Rhino Rack recommends using roof top tent brackets for the Pioneer platform.
Alternatively, if you don't mind abit of fiddling, the 23Zero Extended Mounting Plates would be a great option.
Hello does the 59kg weight include the ladder?
G'day Mari,
Yep, the ladder is designed to stay fixed and packed away with the roof top tent, so the total weight does include that.
It can be removed though if you are cutting it fine with your vehicles roof load rating.
Does the fly have the clear sections for looking through the sky windows, like the new series Darche Intrepidor?
G'day Mari,
Great question - the fly on the Dakota 1400 S4 is solid, so if you want to get the full sky view you'll need to remove the fly on those occasions.
It's not too tricky to do, but just make sure you keep it on for the colder months as additional rain and condensation support.
How much weight can it carry from the two people sleeping inside?
G'day Steven,
The roof top tents themselves dont have a weight limit, that's purely determined by the static roof weight limit of your vehicle.
The ladders do have a 150Kg rating.
Hope that helps!
How have they supplied power to the light bar that hangs from the top of the tent. Is it permanent power thsts mounted through to the tent or just a portable charger in that pocket that you can see from one of the pictures above. Cheers
G'day Matthew,
The LED light strip is a relatively new upgrade for the Dakotas - a power supply isn't provided, but the cable has a USB connector end so will be suitable to connect to any portable power pack, much like the compact ones designed to charge up phones, etc
Hope that helps!
I’m sure this is the case with all canvas but I noticed a few stitching holes in mine. Pretty sure it’s covered by that plastic seal tape they use on the inside but should I water this section to try and tighten/shrink the holes or am I being silly? It’s one of those things where it’s so pitch black they stand out more :-)
G'day Glen,
Yes that does happen now and then from the manufacturing process.
Seasoning the material should help to expand then tighten the fabric and help get rid of the stitching holes, so it would be worth a shot. Always make sure it's fully dry before packing away.
What would be a suitable size tray/rack for this RTT. ie: 1600mm x 1200mm/1000mm or 1400mm x 1000mm etc etc Thanks in advance
G'day Craig,
Choose the tray/rack that is best suited to your vehicle, either size will work well. As long as it's a flat tray you will be able to attach the connections to secure the Roof Top tent.
When selecting roof racks you will need to consider weight ratings. A roof tent typically weighs 60 kg so best to get racks that have a load rating of a minimum 75kg or 100kg even better. These ratings are for dynamic weights when a vehicle is moving to cope with braking and turning. The static weight on the racks is much higher than the dynamic rating. Also, check the load capacity of your vehicle's roof.
Look for racks that will leave a reasonable gap between the roof and the racks. This space allows for easier access to fasten or loosen bolts, making the installation process easier.
For personalized advice, consult with a specialist roof rack retailer. They'll have a database to find racks that are suitable for your model vehicle and compatible with a roof top tent. While racks and tents can be fitted to most vehicles, seeking professional advice is recommended.
Hi, just wondering what the set up and pack up time would be including the cover? Thanks heaps!
G'day Ashley,
Your first time might take you a while, but once you get used to it you're probably looking at 10-15mins tops.
Hope that helps.
Hi there will this be too long to go onto the tent if mounted in a tub rack instead of the roof, tent sitting level of the roof on a ute when folded away
G'day Dave,
You've asked this question on the actual roof top tent, so I'm assuming you're referring to the 1400 Annex?
In that case the annex has a variable drop between 172 − 210 cm. It would just be a matter of measuring how high the roof or your ute is to check for compatibility.
Hope that helps!
Hi I was wondering what the options are to increase the mattress if needed? can this be done and what options would be available.
G'day Darren,
We'd recommend looking at the Roof Top Tent Mattress RTM 1400 - its the only option in our range suitable for being folded in a packed up roof top tent.
All other mattress options would need to be put in and removed every time you set up/pack down.
Hi, What weight is the ladder rated for ?
G'day Mark,
We've had this question before through other channels, so we know the weight ratings on these roof top tent ladders is 150Kg.
Hope that helps!
Hi I have a canopy with 2 roof racks on the top. What is the maximum distance between the 2 roof racks to suit installation.
G'day Jarryd,
Theres no distance between the roof racks that need to be considered. The roof top tent has a length of around 143cm which is parallel to the vehicle if you are wanting a side entry set up. so as long as your roof racks fit inside that 143cm length, you should be ok.
I have a tub with two rhino crossbars. I would like the tent to fold to one side of the car, but I have noticed the mounting tracks will be running north-south and my bars will be running east-west.
G'day Jack,
This shouldn't be a problem as this will be the same as mounting the tent on the roof and having it open to the side. The main thing to confirm will be the load rating of your racks when mounted over your tub, as the weight of the tent, plus racks, and people might exceed your setup. Have a look at the mounting video on the 23Zero website, this should help you understand how the rails mount to your roof racks.
Hi there, keen to buy this but how do we know if the roof bars are gonna take the gear. I have fairly standard Thule type roof bars on a Land Rover discovery - around 60 mm wide. Are you able to share pictures of suitable roof racks or offer more advice then "we need to check the suitability" thanks a lot
G'day Paul,
You can generally attach these rooftop tents to most brands of roof racks using the supplied fixing kit (have a look at the final image for more details). 23Zero has a rooftop tent fitting video on their website that might also help you understand how they attach. The main thing to confirm is that your roof load rating is suitable, and accounts for the roof racks, the tent, and yourselves. Generally with larger vehicles like the Land Rover Discovery you should be fine, but just be sure to double check.
Can I use this on top of Honda crv? What do I need to install apart from roof bars? Do I need roof tray? Do u have any video of setting up and packing up? Thank you
G'day Michelle,
It is possible that you could use this Dakota Rooftop Tent on a Honda CRV, however you'd need to check the vehicle roof load rating with the vehicle manufacturer to determine if it can handle the capacity. You'll need roof racks to attach the tent to, 23Zero supply a range of fittings that you can see in the image with the fixing kit, so you'd need to ensure that the roof racks were compatible with these fittings. At this point in time we don't have a pack-up / set-up video, however there are a few user made youtube clips around showing various rooftop tents beings set up that might be handy to have a look at if you're not sure.
I am setting up a trailer to take a roof top tent and was wondering if there was a minimum height required for the ladder to full lock and still be useable Cheers Connor
G'day Connor,
There isn't a minimum height required for the ladder, but you might find that it will end up at quite an angle if you're mounting it on top of a trailer.
Hi team, which 10cm self inflating mattress would recommend for this RTT. Thanks in advance.
G'day Matt,
The self-inflating mats don't go so well with the rooftop tents due to the design and shape of the tent, and the folding mechanism. Darche makes a self-inflating roof top tent mattress in a 1400 size that is 10cm thick that should do the trick for you.
How does this mattress compare with the 23zero 1400 stealth model? Is the stealth model a higher density foam? Also can the ladders be removed on the 23 zero rtt models to reduce packed height? Thank you
G"day Drew,
The mattress on the Stealth is a little thinner at 5cm, the Dakota is 6.5cm. The ladder needs to be used as some of the weight of the unfolded tent is supported by the ladder.
The measurement from ground to top of my roof rack is 2100mm. Will this be an appropriate height to mount the tent on top of ? Thanks
G'day Matt,
This question is probably best directed at your vehicle manufacturer. If you've lifted your vehicle and then you're adding a rooftop tent you might find your car becomes top-heavy, which can be dangerous. 23Zero don't specify a max mount height as it is dependent on the vehicle and specifications of the vehicle including GVM etc.
hi guys and gals. Just wondering if it can be done or if it is legal. Do you think a surfboard or 2 could be strapped down to the rooftop while driving? Have a good day and thank you for your good work!
G'day Reef,
In your case, I would look at your owner's manual for the maximum weight ratings for your vehicles plus I'd also take into consideration the overhang and how all this will affect the drivability of your vehicle. For more information, I found an article on Roof Racks HERE. Is it legal - I'm not sure but I'd encourage you to check with the Motor Vehicle Registry office.
Should you weather these tents with water or even a water proofing agent and how and what process
G'day Blake,
There is no need to weather the 23Zero Rooftop Tents, they are waterproof from the get-go.
how long is the warranty? thank you
G'day Giulia,
The Dakota 1400 has a 12-month warranty.
**Update - the Warranty period has recently changed, so please double check the Warranty period under the Details & Specs section on the product page.
Where is the tent made? Thank you
G'day Guilia,
The 23Zero range is manufactured overseas, primarily China with some elements and components coming from other countries.
Hope that helps.
I’d like to know if there is enough room in the PVC cover to allow for some bedding or a thicker mattress/ topper to be folded up with the tent?
G'day Tom,
Unfortunately, you won't be able to fold up your rooftop tent with bedding inside unless it is very very compact.
Can these be freighted (to Mackay) or are they instore pickup only?
G'day Heather,
Yes, at this stage we are able to ship all of the 23Zero Rooftop tent range to Mackay.
