Hi, does the bag have a zip on both sides so it can be folded straight down over your chest or is it just one zip on one side?
G'day Jason,
This Sleeping Bag has the choice of a zipper either on the left or on the right, so there isn't a zipper on each side to be able to fold the top layer down. You can still fully unzip the bag from one zip.
The mega has a higher warmth rating ( for colder weather) than the rivergum, but I see some mixed review re the mega. Wondering which is the better bag? I'm wanting two bags with a good warmth rating for the high country and the ability to zip two bags together . Confused? Thanks
G'day Trudy,
The Cotton Canvas Mega and the Rivergum are both popular models with similar features. They can both be zipper together as long as you purchase opposing zippers. In terms of temperature, although the Oztrail better specified rating, based on customer feedback the Oztent option is about the same. The main advantage of the Rivergum is the zip-out fleece liner, this helps keep you toasty warm, but can also be thrown in the wash when you get home. Overall it comes down to personal preference, but the Rivergum has a slight edge in my opinion.
I have a Coleman Easy Up 6P Gold tent, and am borrowing a stretcher and sleeping mat to see if I like sleeping in a stretcher before I buy one. In the future I'm looking at an Exped Megamat 10 LXW, or a Black Wolf Hexatherm 3D. I'm a cold sleeper.
G'day Vanessa,
This sleeping bag has a comfort limit of -7'C, so you should be find for Queensland winters. Combining it with an insulated mat, like the Megamat 10LXW will keep you toasty warm.
Is there a replacement storage bag you would suggest for these? mine has been damaged and is not serviceable
G'day Matt,
Oztrail doesn't sell replacement bags for these sleeping bags, so we'd probably suggest grabbing yourself a Medium or Large Oztrail Canvas Duffle Bag.
Can be stuffed into carry bay or only rolled?
G'day Derek,
Whilst the bags come factory rolled before first use, stuffing them back in for storage is definately the way to go! Given the size of the bag, and how 'chunky' they can be, somepeople find it easier to fold. Either way you choose, you'll be right!
Zipper
G'day Shane,
Yes the Cotton Canvas Mega Sleeping Bag can be unzipped and opened up to use as a blanket.
Are the zips able to be joined to another sleeping bag to make a double bag
G'day Marty,
Yep, absolutely! So long as you get a combination of Left and Right zippers you'll be able to join two bags together.
Hi does this have a separate foot zip? ta
G'day Mick,
Yep! Its sure does.
I sleep in a large swag on my own so gets pretty cold inside hopefully you can tell me the bag that is suited cheers
G'day Lockie,
Thanks for getting in touch. The Oztrail Cotton Canvas Mega, Oztent Rivergum XL and Cold Mountain Canvas 1100 are all pretty similar. There are a few main differences between them that may help decision making. The Oztrail bag is the warmest with a comfort temperature of -7'C. The Rivergum XL has a removable fleece liner, which can be helpful for keeping the inside of your bag clean. The Cold Mountain Canvas is a little wider and has zippers on both sides so Cna be handy to get in and out. All three bags are very popular and have great reviews, so we find that people chose based on personal preference.
Have been able to view the oztent but the oztrail is not in stock to compare
G'day Sharon,
The Oztrail Cotton Canvas Mega and Oztent Rivergumn XL are pretty similar in temperature rating and material. One handy feature of the Oztent Rivergum Xl is the removable fleece liner, which for some people is the winning factor.
Have seen this bag elsewhere and the extreme is -7 not -12? Can you confirm which is correct?
G'day Teghan,
The Oztrail Cotton Canvas Mega does get a lower limit rating of -12. Just to be confusing they do make another bag called the Oztrail Cotton Canvas Jumbo that has a lower limit rating of -7. I hope this helps clear things up a bit!
I am after a durable sleeping bag for my daughters 6th birthday present, preferably all seasons (inc Aust snow) and something that will last for years. We have a cotton liner for it. Is this too big? Should I invest in a down bag for longevity? Thanks in advance!
I think this will be too big for your 6-year-old Kate, there will be a lot of extra bag for one little body to warm up.
Regarding down vs synthetic, talking from one parent to another, I'd recommend synthetic bags for kids. They are easier to clean (think bed-wetting and whatever else they manage to impart onto their sleeping bag) and are much more forgiving to the rough nature of kids. Regularly washing down will affect the performance of the bag, and the lighter weight fabrics used in a down bag are more susceptible to tearing.
My recommendations for your 6-year-old would be the Youth Bag from Coleman or the Palm Visa Bag from Roman. The Coleman Youth C-3, in particular, is a great kids bag, it has an efficient shape, cosy hood to keep them warm and is very affordable. It's also durably constructed so it will see you through years of use with a max. user height of 176 cm.
I hope this helps.
What material is the storage bag made of, is it cotton canvas to?
G'day Tony,
The carry bags included with the Cotton Canvas Mega Sleeping Bag is made from a cotton canvas material as well.
Can you please advise what is the best size liner to use with this sleeping bag to help make it last and not having to wash it?
G'day Karl,
There is no liner currently available which is the equivalent size of the Oztrail Cotton Canvas Mega Sleeping Bag, however, you can opt for any of the slightly narrower single rectangular liners available.
Hi there, when you talk about the zipper opening side, is that from facing the sleeping bag in your photo or from lying in the bag on your back? Also, I bought a Coleman Dexter Point -5C Sleeping Bag of you which is great but no longer available unfortunately. How does the Oztrail Mega compare to that for in a swag? Thanks for your help and great service as always 😃
G'day Karl,
The zipper side refers to the side the zipper is on when laying in the sleeping bag.
The Oztrail Cotton Canvas Mega Sleeping Bag, in my opinion, is a small step up from the Coleman Dexter Point -5C Sleeping Bag especially in durability and feel and would be a fantastic option for using in a swag.
Long narrow cover still available?
G'day Simon,
The Oztrail Cotton Canvas Mega Sleeping Bag now only comes with the square bag.
Is the lining removable at all?
G'day Lauren,
I've just checked our display stock and unfortunately, the liner in the Oztrail Cotton Canvas Mega sleeping bag isn't removable.
I have one already it says left on the tag, which one do I need to make a pair?
G'day Nathan,
if you already have a left zipper model, then you'll just need to select 'Zipper on the right' from the drop-down menu above.
Hi, it this bag come with advanced features such as a chest collar & draft tubes to ensure a warm sleep. Can I get same colour for left and right?
G'day Aeson,
The Oztrail Cotton Canvas Mega Sleeping Bag comes with a drawstring that runs through the top of the chest and through to the cocoon hood to allow you to enclose the bag on your body aiding with warmth.
As you can see from the image, it also runs horizontal baffles all the way up the bag which are full 2 layers of 200 gsm high loft hollow chamber polyester fibre.
You are more than welcome to get either colour with a left or right zip.
G'day Nick,
Great observation. The bag has been updated since January and which has made this response from June 'out of date' on that specification. I'll edit it now.
The bag comes with straps and is folded into a carry bag. Do you recommend it be folded back up and stored, or, that it be stuffed into its carry bag. Thank you.
G'day Jim,
Because of the synthetic filling of the Oztrail Cotton Canvas Mega Sleeping bag, it's not critical that you fold/stuff it a particular way. Ultimately, with this bag, it would be a case of what's easiest for you. We recommend that people stuff their bags because if you do choose to fold, you need to try and prevent folding on the same crease lines every time you pack it away.
Is there any major difference between this and the Coleman Pilbara C-5? which would you recommend for an average size woman who feels the cold. It would be for camping in 10 to 5 degree min temps
G'day Ryan,
The difference between the Oztrail Cotton Canvas Mega and Coleman Pilbara C-5 is very minimal. Aside from the small variation in temperature rating, they're very much identical bags. In regards to the situation that you have described, either of these bags would be a suitable option for staying warm and comfortable.
Are these bags machine washable?
G'day Nicole,
I've just had a look at the care instructions, and it says that the Oztrail Cotton Canvas Mega Sleeping bag is hand wash only.
I have an old one of these and was hoping to get a second if they will join together. Are the old/new zippers compatible?
Hi Patrick,
When you say old model, how old do you think it would be? We can contact the supplier on Monday to try to find out for you if you could give us this information. Thanks
Can 2 of these be zipped together? obviously somebody head will have a hood over it though.
G'day Isaac,Â
I've called Oztrail and they've said that you can zip two of the Cotton Canvas Mega Sleeping Bags together, as long as you get one in a left and the other in a right zipper.
A left and right zipper will also eliminate the hood issue, so one person won't have to sleep with their face covered.Â
I own the previous model of this bag and absolutely love it. The only weak point with the old model was the tiny little zip... I always felt it needed to be a bit more robust. Do you know if the zip on this one has been upgraded at all? Thanks
G'day Lukas. As far as I know the zip has not been changed between models. If you ever have any problems at all with any part of the Bag we will always look after the Warranty on that for you at the store, so you can buy with confidence knowing that we will always have your back! Happy Camping.
Hi, Can you please tell me what if the difference is between this new model and the previous model (Snowys Code: 40556-P / Supplier Code: SBA-CCB-B) if any? Thanks.
G'day Nadine,
From comparing the two, for the most part the superseded model and current model are the same bag, the only differences would be cosmetic and perhaps a slight fabric variation - but the quality would be the same.
Hi, If these zip together in the centre to create a double, is there a way of still opening the bottom or side of one bag if it gets too hot? Or are the bags stuck as one of its a double. Cheers!
do these bags have a left zip and right zip combination to zip the bags together?
does this sleeping bag come in queen size if so how much
