When you need to run your portable compressor fridge or freezer on your expeditions, then the CoolPower RAPS44 Battery Power Pack from Dometic is the way to go.
Built to be used with compatible Dometic compressor fridge or freezers, this heavy duty 12V battery has a greater discharge and charging cycle capability with 44-amp hours. With all the benefits of a dual battery system, but with the added advantage of being portable and flexible, this battery is a great alternative to a dual battery system.
Use the CoolPower44 Power Pack to help keep your food and beverages chilled in your unit on the road or at the campsite.
While charging the battery pack via the 12v charger in the car, I noticed the volt reached over 13v when driving through the streets. However, it discharged while driving on the highway and dropped to below 12v, so I had to unplug it. It was not connected to the fridge or anything, just pure charging. Is this normal? Should I unplug the charger once it’s charged full?
G'day Jessica,
Sounds like you may have a newer car with a smart alternator, in which case you'll need to install a DC to DC charger in order to charge any portable power packs or batteries.
I have a solar blanket with a max 16.3 amp hour capability. It has a controller. Could this damage this power pack?
G'day Doug,
This particular power pack hasn't really been designed with solar recharging in mind. It can be charged via solar using alligator clips, with a maximum of 15A, however it is recommended to only use a controller that will automatically cut out when the battery is full, otherwise, you'll risk damaging it. There are a few other options that might be more suitable, so please feel free to send us an email with what you're wanting to run, and we can help set you up with the best options for you.
ðŸ‘
G'day Phil,
Depending on the fridge model you've got it will likely consume 3-4 amps per hour, the CoolPower RAPS44 is a 44 Ah battery, with half of this capacity useable, so if you're not charging the battery via solar or similar you'll flatten the battery in approx 5-7 hours. It would be worth having a look at this blog post for handy information regarding powering your gear while out and about.
can you charge/ run other devices/ lights off this pack?
G'day Louise,
You can run any 12V device off this Power Pack, you can plug it in via the Cigarette sock, or Hella Socket.
How long does this unit take to charge via 12v socket when the car is running also does it come with a lead so it can be charged via 240
G'day Sandra,
We've had a chat with our Dometic contacts and they have indicated you'll only be able to charge the unit to 70% using the 12V charge lead (it is designed as a top-up trickle charger), they suggest that you charge the unit using a 240V car battery charger (check out the user manual). This could take anywhere from 4 to 12 hours depending on the battery charger you have.
Are you about to parallels two identical battery backs together to double the Ah?
G'day Sean,
Yes, you can connect two CoolPower RAPS44 Power Packs together in parallel to increase the capacity to 88Ah.
If I’m out for a few days camping and need to charge this battery pack up from my car cranking battery, will it drain this battery or do I have to be driving to actually charge it up?
G'day Brendan,
The CoolPower RAPS44 Power Pack will be most efficient and have the best battery life if it gets regularly topped up. You can charge the battery with the vehicle running and stationary, using the charge from your main battery. You might be best off doing this for a few hours here or there over the few days, or buying a solar mat to go with the battery so it can charge during the day.
When charging this from a solar panel/mat, would you need to use the regulator of the solar kit, or would the RAPS regulate the solar power itself? Reason I ask is that a lot of solar kit reviews call out the (poor) quality of the regulator, however, if you could plug solar straight into the RAPS it wouldn't matter as much.
G'day Aaron,
I've just double checked with our resident solar expert and he said you will always need to run the solar panel through a regulator before plugging it into the CoolPower RAPS44 Power Pack. He did also mention that MPPT regulators will do a better job of efficiently regulating so if your panel doesn't have a built-in regulator he suggested grabbing one specifically defined at MPPT.
Thanks for fast delivery I'm new to this kind of stuff I own a waeco cf50 I only really camp 1-3 nights max is this powerful pack going to do the job?
G'day Catherine,
Not a worry, we're here to help! The CF-50 should run off your CoolPower RAPS44 Power Pack for about 1.5 days depending on the external conditions. We'd generally suggest you top the battery up from your vehicle or solar panels if you're planning to be out for multiple days.
does the unit come with 12v and 240v charging
G'day Daryl,
The CoolPower RAPS44 is supplied with a 12V charging cable. To charge with 240V you can use any multi-stage charger up to 15A to charge the unit using the post terminals.
The fridge I have is a 42 litre fridge that has Danfos compressor.
G'day Terry,
Yes, the Dometic CoolPower RAPS44 Power Pack can be used with other brand fridges.
Assuming 30°c days and average night temps, approximately how long would the Dometic CFX 50W Fridge run off the Coolpower RAPS44 before going flat if the fridge is set between 0-4°c?
G'day Marsh,
The Dometic CFX 50W fridge will run for approximately 36-40 hours on fridge mode, or 13-17 hours on freezer mode (this is on page 4 of the user manual you can download at the bottom of the product page for the CoolPower RAPS44). They test the approximate run times at 32'C so that should be pretty accurate for you.
Does this unit come with the 240v charging lead, and if not do you sell the lead. Thanks.
G'day Michael,
The Dometic Coolpower RAPS44 Power Pack doesn't come with a 240v charger, and we don't sell anything suitable sorry. You'll need to run down to your local auto supply store, like Repco or Autobarn, and grab a standard car battery charger.
Can the battery be replaced easily? I noticed on another similar product it’s mentioned that it was a sealed unit. Is that the case here? If so what is the benefit of this over an empty battery box where you can replace the battery and still get all the connectors, and free pick of the type of battery to use?
G'day Peter,
The Dometic CoolPower RAPS44 Power Pack is a sealed unit. So, the battery can't be easily replaced. The benefit of something like this, when compared to an empty box, is often the price.
Hi. I have some 12V led bar camp lights and also a small waeco CFX 28 fridge. I'd like to be able to plug these both into the battery during the evening. Is this possible? I'm not really sure what a 'hella' socket is as all of my 'camping' products just use the cigarette plug thingy.
G'day Laura,
Hella sockets are an increasingly popular power socket, the Dometic CoolPower RAPS44 Power Pack is probably just a little too far ahead of the curve on this one. You can grab adaptors to plug your cigarette lighter plugs into this socket. We don't do them but I'd suggest someone like Jaycar would have them. In my research, you can pick one up for less than $10.
can the Dometic cool power be charged in the vehicle via 12v and run the fridge at the same time?
You can charge from 12V and power a fridge at the same time Scott, but if charging from 240V the recommendation is to remove the fridge and DC charging lead.
You can download the user manual from our product page, this outlines installation and charging options.
Hey just wanted to ask if these came with or you could buy a dc charging cable for the house or do you need to buy a battery charger and use the pos and neg posts. Is it just the 12v charger that can use the plug?
G'day Joshua,
I've just sussed this out for you. To use a 240V plug to charge the Dometic CoolPower RAPS44 Battery Pack you'd need to grab a standard car battery charger from Supercheap Auto or similar, Dometic don't make a 240V charger and you do need to use the charging posts.
I have 120w fold out solar panels/blanket - just wondering if it would charge this very effectively?
G'day Jay,
I've just checked with the manual for the CoolPower RAPS44 Battery Pack, and I found that you can use alligator clips on the two terminals to charge this battery, and it should be effective provided you’ve got sunlight to maintain a charge. Your 120 watt solar panel should be enough to keep this battery pack topped up on a daily basis as well.
