Is there any word on if the pump and hoses are safe for drinking water? Want to add one of these to my camper and the included pump has a higher flow than my current one
G'day Steve,
The Smarttek Hot Water Systems aren't WaterMarked, so can't be recommended for drinking water.
Generally the WaterMark certification is required for systems like this to be able to be used for drinking water, even if using fully food safe parts.
Can you use hard water (bore water) with the Smarttek HWS, using the filter?
G'day,
Abit of research suggests that whilst the filter will help somewhat, its designed primarily for particulates, & isnt fine enough to guarantee protection from scale & build up.
I think if its only being used with bore water on occasion, and can be flushed with clean tap water after each trip, then you should be ok.
If you're wanting to have it set up on bore water permanently - eg. at a remote property - you're best treating the bore water with a softener first, & keep the filter in place.
Hope that helps.
the specs state that the 6Lpm pump will do "Up to 10m with MAX 3m Rise", so I assume I can replace the 2m hose supplied with a slightly longer one ?
G'day again Michael,
This pump pushes better than it sucks. So if you need to have a water source further away, the pump is best kept closer to the water source than the shower itself.
Hope that helps!
Is there any way to disable the temperature safety cut off? It’s incredibly annoying when you want hot (not warm) water for dishes and the water turns cold three times in the course of filling a sink. I have to turn it off, turn it back on and spray the cold water that comes out at the start onto the ground before it goes hot enough to put into the sink.
G'day Lynda,
No, there isnt. The safety cut-off is 55°c which is more than hot enough to wash dishes - you couldn't put your bare hands in it for more than a few seconds without burning them, for example.
I'd suggest setting the unit to 50°c for example, so it's able to produce consistently hot water without getting too close to getting the cut-off triggered.
Probably also worth mentioning that Australian Plumbing regulations state hot water from the tap should not exceed 50°c, so the Smarttek will be providing you with the same scenario as you'd get washing dishes at home.
Hope that helps in some way, and if you are needing hotter water you may just need to whip out the kettle.
Thanks Lauren. It actually cuts out at around 41 degrees. I use gloves and want to wash in the hottest water possible. By the time it cuts out and gives me cold water 3 times the washing up water is barely warm.
Ok, do you know if your unit is running in Summer or Winter mode?
Also, you may need to 'reset' the temperature settings....heck out the below info direct from Smarttek - hopefully that helps!!
"In Summer Mode your system has ignited 2 gas burners. In Winter there is 6 Burners active.
First complete the temperature setting test to see if your system is operating as intended. CLICK HERE
If your system still cuts out on winter mode only, try putting your Gas dial to minimum and running it there for a moment, then slowly increase the gas.
It could just be getting a little to hot in there 😉 causing the Temperature Cut Off Sensor to kick in."
Can a quick connect adapter be fitted to the hot water outlet in the same way as the cold water connection?
G'day Paul,
Yes, thats the Shower Hose Quick Connect that you would be after.
Hope that helps!
Can they run off a 2kg gas bottle
G'day Troy,
The Smarttek hot water system uses LPG, and comes with a 3/8th gas hose.
It doesnt matter what size your LPG bottle is, but you may need an adapter if it has a different fitting to 3/8th.
Where can you place the unit? Is it weatherproof enough to be set up outside during rain? We're campers, not caravan-ers. Thanks.
G'day Michael,
We've had this question before on the other Black model.
Smarttek hasn't got an official waterproof rating on the unit, they have however indicated that it is dust, wind, and rain spray resistant. As there isn't any official waterproof rating, we'd thoroughly recommend moving the unit under cover if it's raining.
If you have a tent or camper trailer awning/annex space, just move it under there, or consider having a tarp or tent that can cover the shower in inclement weather.
Thanks Lauren! I assume it can't be operated in a small space either - like for instance a ventilated double shower tent?
It should be operated outside of a tent due to Australian Gas Association standards, but if you had an ensuite shower tent it wouldn't be too difficult to just move the unit inside if the rain sets in.
Like the Joolca, is there a water filter on this unit?
G'day Darren,
There isn't a built-in filter, but you can pick up an inline one as an optional accessory, here.
This is compatible with any of the Smarttek models.
Will this shower work with regular water tank with no pump - just gravity fed?
G'day David,
Unfortunately not, gravity-fed water supply just doesn't have enough pressure for this unit.
The Smarttek shower requires around 30-40psi, and as a water tank 1m off the ground gives you 1.5 psi, you'd be needing to suspend your water source minimum 20m above ground to get enough pressure.
Hope that helps.
Is there any difference other than the pump supplied?
G'day Hamish,
I'm assuming you mean between the two model Smarttek Black units?
In which case the pump size is the only difference. The physical unit is identical.
Hi, does the pump need to be used if connected to mains? We are planing on using this for an outdoor bath where we have access to mains water (cold) but no power for the 12 volt pump
G'day Joel,
No, you won't need the pump if you're running the unit from mains water. Just hook up your hose and gas bottle, and you'll be all set to go!
Hi, I'm looking to save money by not using the electric heating unit in my inflatable spa. I'm thinking a unit like this might be a cheaper alternative. Draw water from the spa then feed it back in once heated. The problem might be that the water is chlorinated, would that damage your unit?
G'day Mark,
This isn't something we'd recommend, as the unit hasn't been designed with this in mind. These water heaters are designed as a temperature source of hot water for use while camping etc, they're not designed to provide continuous hot water via a feedback/re-use system.
Does this unit come with a tube/pipe you can place into a jerry can and draw water which I assume gets heated and thenhave a shower
G'day Peter,
Yes, there is a length of hose from the water source to the pump on the Smarttek
Black Smart Hot Water System 6Lpm. You shouldn't have any issues drawing water from a jerry can.
I have a pump system set up already and wondering if they are sold without the pump.
G'day Darin,
We're only able to source the units from Smarttek with the pump included. It would be best to reach out to Smarttek directly if you're trying to get your hands on a unit without a pump, as they'll be able to advise whether or not this is possible.
Can the unit be used to pump cold water (gas disconnected)?
G'day Ben,
The unit will only work when the gas is connected, so no, this unit can't be used to just pump cold water with the gas disconnected.
Where can I source a 12 volt battery clip lead with cigarette plug as shown in the setup video?
G'day Andrew,
I've had a look at our youtube set up clip and Ben uses the supplied alligator clip leads with an alligator to 12V cigarette plug adapter he grabbed from a local auto parts store. The Smarttek Multi Cable Pack has 12V cigarette plug option if you wanted to use that instead of the supplied alligator clips.
Could you set this up to recycle the same water using the filter accessory? I was thinking of setting up with a canvas shower tray that drains to a hose connection and use hose to recycle water during showering.
G'day Benjamin,
To an extent you can use this unit to recycle water, however, soap and dirt etc will clog up your unit pretty quickly. We'd suggest grabbing yourself a filter if you're wanting to do this.
Hi, could you please provide the head/discharge curve for the pump for this unit? At a minimum could you please provide the maximum head the pump is good for? Thanks in advance for your assistance!
G'day Anthony,
I'm not 100% sure exactly what you mean, but I assume you're wanting to know how far the pump can push water uphill against gravity? If so, then it is specified to pump 6L/min up to 40m with maximum 10m rise.
How many amps does this unit draw? I’m wondering if I’m camping off grid whether it would drain too much of my single 100amp battery in my trailer...
G'day Leisha,
The draw for the Smarttek Black Smart Hot Water System 6Lpm pump is 6Ah.
Hope that helps!
Thanks Susie, does the unit need to be mounted vertically or can it be mounted face down or back down?
G'day Peter,
The recommendation is that the unit would be mounted vertically, so we wouldn't suggest mounting it in any other orientation.
When Water starts flowing does the unit auto ignite?
G'day Peter,
Yes, this unit has an auto-ignition once the water starts flowing.
Wondering if this pack comes with stand or do u have to buy tripod stand as a seperate component
G'day Rachael,
The Tripod Stand doesn't come with the unit itself, you can purchase it separately here.
I noticed the tripod stand is currently put of stock, what alternative is there for the water unit? E.g. can it stand on a small table or hang on something else? We are contemplating a purchase but would want to get it before the stands are back in stock
G'day Sam,
We're expecting the stock to land again quite soon, so it shouldn't be too long before we've got more. Alternately we do have the Draw Bar Mount in stock if you are planning to travel with a trailer. There is also a loop-shaped handle on the back of the unit that you could use to hand it from a tree branch or similar.
Like a wall mount, but without being illegal because it's not being mounted in a house
G'day Steve,
There are no mounting holes on the rear of the Smarttek unit. There is a hanging hook at the top that you could use to try and mount it, however as you indicate, they're not legally allowed to be mountable as they are a portable unit.
.
G'day Chris,
No, the Smarttek Hot Water Systems aren't made in Australia. Smarttek are Australian owned and operated.
Have u got a larger capacity pump say a 8 or 12 ppm availiable? One that will replace this one?
G'day Dave,
The largest capacity pump that Smarttek produce is the 6Lpm pump. The unit has been designed to work with a maximum output of 6Lpm.
Can the unit be permanent wall mount instead of the pole mount
G'day Peter,
There are regulations for portable gas hot water systems that mean they can't be permanently mounted to a fixed object (e.g. a house). Smarttek do make a Draw Bar Mount should you want to fix the unit to your camper Trailer/Caravan with a Quick Release Mounting Bracket, however it's not able to be mounted to a wall.
As above
G'day Michael,
I've checked the box and it says 1 x 2m Hose included, however, on the other side it lists a 5m hose as an accessory available to purchase separately.
Would it be possible to I stall this in our camp kitchen so that it runs to a tap and to the shower? Even if you could only use one if the outlets at a time but have them connected permanently?
G'day Ann,
You can use the Smarttek T-Piece to achieve this, Ann - https://www.snowys.com.au/dual-shower-hose-t-piece. You can leave your unit attached to both a shower and sink so you can draw hot water to either, but you won't be able to run hot water to both at the same time.
I hope that makes sense.
Looking for an alternative to buying an expensive hydrobath for washing our big dogs. Can this unit draw up water from a large tank/tub eg. Tank of water & dog shampoo Or tick rinse? Or does it only connect to a tap for fresh water? The unit would be mounted under cover in a carport area, would this be ok or would we need to pack it up each time?
G'day Sarah,
What a great idea! The Smarttek Hot Water System can draw water from a large tank or tub, or you can use hose fittings to connect it to an outside tap. The pump is really only designed to draw water through it, so maybe dog shampoo and tick rinse might need to be applied separately direct onto the dogs. As long as the unit is protected from the weather, which sounds like it would be, then it should be ok to leave set up and ready to use.
Hey There, We are looking for a portable hotwater system which can handle cold temperatures. We have a caravan in the Snowy Mountains and we are wondering what system could be mounted outside and handle the temperatures in alpine conditions? We understand the pipes might need insulating but could the body itself withstand the conditions there?
G'day Naomi,
Thanks for the question! Your Smarttek Black Hot Water System is going to be more than fine for use in alpine conditions, however there are a few considerations.
1. The unit can heat water to 40*c above ambient temperatures. If using the Hot Water System in temp below 5 or 10*c it wont ever reach its max 55*c output.
2. Make sure to drain the system of water completely over night. If theres any water left in the system, and it freezes, it will damage the unit.
3. Being a portable/camping hot water system, it is not designed to be permanently mounted outside and exposed to the elements. It will need to be stored approriately between trips.
