Staff tip:The Smarttek Black is supplied with an LCC27 Type 27 gas cylinder connection. This will only connect to a 4kg or 9kg gas cylinder with an LCC27 Type 27 cylinder valve. This connection will NOT connect (screw−in) to the old POL Type 21 gas cylinder valve.
Staff tip:Just to cover our bums, we should mention that the tripod stand isn't included and is available as a separate item.
Hi, Do you have a (adjustable or non adjustable) pressure or flow rate reduction valve available as an accessory or can you recommend a supplier of such an item? Most of the time I will be using the water from an existing water tank with a water pressure pump fitted. However the pump has a flow rate of approx. 8L/M. I would like to reduce the flow to the Smarttek when using the water from this pump to 4-5 L/M, mainly to conserve water when off grid. Many thanks.
Tony - Safety Bay, WA(5 months ago)
G'day Tony,
We have just confirmed this with Smarttek and the unit itself reduces the water flow, so you won't need an additional flow rate reduction valve. Say if you plug in from your water tank or garden hose tap, it will only pump out anywhere from 2 - 6L/M as the unit itself has a water adjustment built in.

gas conection1 answer
can you run this from a 3/8 sae 4kg bottle direct to the 3/8 gas inlet?
scott - Tecoma, VIC(1 year ago)
G'day Scott,
This Smarttek system uses a 3/8 SAE hose from the appliance to an LCC27 fitting to the gas bottle, the current hose wouldn't fit to a smaller gas bottle with a 3/8 fitting. You will need an adaptor to make this work, the Gasmate 3/8" BSPP LH TO LCC27 adaptor would work to connect this hose to the 4kg gas bottle.

Temp rise spec +40c ?1 answer
Does anyone know or is Smarttek confident about the temp rise being at least 40c above ambient on max gas/min flow winter setting - i ask because i will be camping at place where water temp will be just above zero, and i need 40c water to be comfortable
Aaron - Alderly, QLD(4 years ago)
G'day Aaron,
Yes, Smartek is confident in its design, with the maximum water temperature of 42C above ambient. When the water is colder the unit will consume more gas but can reach the temperature you're indicating.

outside durability1 answer
Is this heater ok to leave out side when its raining, I guess the question is, is it water proof.
David - Adelaide, SA(4 years ago)
G'day David,
Smarttek hasn't got an official waterproof rating on the unit, they have however indicated that it is dust, wind and rain shock resistance. As there isn't any official rating, I'd recommend moving the unit under cover if it's raining.

Marinised pump?1 answer
I assume this pump is for fresh water only? As in, not to be used for salt water if using on a boat?
Sarah - Brisbane(4 years ago)
G'day Sarah,
Yes, this is correct, the pump is designed for freshwater use only. They've not been designed for use on boats, or with salt water.

Can it run on 12V instead of batteries?1 answer
Can the HWS unit be powered by 12V instead of batteries (referring to the HWS unit itself, not the pump)?
Greg - Port Macquarie(4 years ago)
G'day Greg,
The only thing the batteries on the unit itself are required for are the ignition, so, unfortunately, that can't be powered by 12V. It takes 2 x D-cell batteries, which will generally last quite a long time, and they're only powering it at start-up.

Higher volume pump1 answer
Hi, is it possible to order this unit with the higher volume - 6lpm - pump, or does it need to be bought separately meaning we would have two pumps, one of which we would never use. Thanks
Greg - Bega(4 years ago)
G'day Greg,
If you're wanting a high volume 6Lpm pump then you can purchase that combination directly, so that you only end up with one piump. You can find the 6Lpm version here.

LPG fitting1 answer
Can you remove the regulator from the standard hose and replace it with smarttec type 2 quick fit and connect it straight to my already regulated camper gas system.
Tom - Port Stephens(4 years ago)
G'day Tom,
You can connect this unit directly to a campers bayonet system by removing the hose and regulator. The gas fitting on the unit is 3/8" SAE, so you will likely already have a hose that will do the trick, if you don't have a hose then you can find them here. The quick connects aren't needed, but you could use those in the system too if you want an easier and quicker system set up.

regular hose fitting to the hot water outlet?1 answer
Can you screw on a regular garden hose fitting to the hot water outlet?
Paul - Parkinson(4 years ago)
G'day Paul,
You can attach a regular garden hose to the water inlet, however, the outlet will only fit the supplied 2m stainless steel hose and showerhead.

Option for running cold water?1 answer
Is it possible to run straight cold water through the heater? I only need shower temp or cold for filling water bottles etc. Is this possible or do the injectors need to be running for the system to work?
Dave - Sydney(5 years ago)
G'day Dave,
I've just given our display model a go with the gas switched off and it will still run, however, I'm not sure it's something Smarttek would recommend. I'm not sure what you plan to do with the water bottles, but the pump and hoses aren't designed for pumping drinking water if that was your plan.

Can i recirculate the soapy water1 answer
i imagine if the pump can draw from various sources then if i showered in say a large trug then i could re draw the used water and shower all day for no excess water usage.
chris - allambie(5 years ago)
G'day Chris,
Great question! It's not recommended to continuously recycle soapy water as it may cause issues with the pump over time, which could void the warranty. If you do choose to recycle the water then a 'soapless' soap such as wilderness wash would be a good option.

No pump option?1 answer
Can this be purchased without the pump?
Henry - Canberra(5 years ago)
G'day Henry,
All of the Smarttek Hot Water Systems are supplied with a pump, so, unfortunately, no you won't be able to get your hands on just the unit itself from us direct, but you might be able to chat directly with Smarttek to see if they have any option available

Pump Type1 answer
Is the pump submersible or does it use two lengths of hose either side, one to water source and one to the unit? If submersible, does the pump size fit through the opening of a standard 20L jerry can?
Liam - Sydney(5 years ago)
G'day Liam,
The pump has two lengths of hose, one on either side of the pump. The hose used to draw the water has nothing on the end of it, so yes you can submerge it in a standard jerry can.

Pump Power Options1 answer
The pump comes with alligator clips for connection to the car’s battery but what other options are there for powering the pump? 1. Is connection to 12V power via a cig socket possible with the included cable? 2. Is connection to 240V power possible with the included gear?
Liam - Sydney(5 years ago)
G'day Liam,
The Black Smart Hot Water System pump is supplied with a cable that will connect using alligator clips, so if you wanted to connect it using a cig plug then you'll need to grab a Multi Cable Pack , which includes a cigarette plug, Anderson, alligator plugs and a 2.5m cable with switch.

Hanging Point on Rear?1 answer
I’m looking for a unit I can hang from a roof rack on the side of my 4WD when parked and in use. I assume the back of this unit has a simple hanging point if one wanted to avoid the proprietary stand?
Liam - Sydney(5 years ago)
G'day Liam,
Yes, there is a U-shaped handle on the back of the unit so you can hang it over something, or use it to attach to your roof rack using some clips or clamps.

3/8 Gas Bottle?1 answer
Is there any reason why the unit wouldn’t work if connected to a 3/8 inch gas bottle instead of POL by using either an adaptor or different hose?
Liam - Sydney(5 years ago)
G'day Liam,
You can absolutely connect the Smartttek Black Smart Hot Water System to a 3/8" bottle, you'll just need to run it through a 3/8" BSP LH to POL adapter.

Water source2 answers
Can it suck water from creeks or other sources? Or only a tank?
Raff - 2087(6 years ago)
G'day Raff,
Yep! This system can suck water from creeks, dams or other water sources, aswell as tanks or mains. It has pretty versitile application. The Smarttek Black Smart Hot Water System pumps water a distance of 10m, over a maximum 3m rise.
Lauren - Snowys(6 years ago)
Just as an addition, if you creek or other natural water source is particularly muddy, its recommended you invest in a Smarttek Hot Water System Filter
