Having bought two sleeping bags to zip together and finding they’re too short for me (I’m 193cm), wary of making the same mistake twice. These look to be longer, than standard - is that fair to say?
G'day Jason,
The physical length of these sleeping bags 213cm measured laying flat. There is length taken up when you physically get in it, but how much depends on the individual person.
I'd recommend measuring your existing bags flat to see how they compare in length, and use that to guide your decison.
From my perspective I’d choose the Pilbara if I wanted a removable inner liner and Big Game for a more durable bag with higher level of cozy comfort for an extra $10 according to current pricing. Both a zip together. Outside that they very similar bags? Please add your thoughts why you’d buy one over the other. I’m unsure which to choose.
G'day Matt,
Theres not a huge amount of difference in function or performance. The decision would come down to weather or not you want the flexibility of a removable liner, and therefore a bag that can potentially be used in a larger range of temperatures, or if you want something abit heavier duty.
I'd say the Pilbara would appeal more to car and tent campers, and the big game more to swaggers and tourers, but again thats not about performance and largely down to the appearance overall.
Hope that helps.
I have both of these bags (two each). The Pilbara packs a bit smaller and has the detachable inner liner, plus a “cosy foot” feature which just lets you unzip the bottom to stick your feet out while leaving the side zipped securely. TBH the liner is a bit of a nuisance as it is zipped down the sides but only buttoned in place at the top, and it’s easy to get caught between the liner and bag when getting in. They’re both made of the same soft cotton inner and outer and both have served me well down to about zero degrees. The dark blue shows dust and dirt more than the khaki. I use them both as sleeping bags (in my tent) and as doonas (in my swag) and in doona mode the Big Game is superior as the flappy lining on the Pilbara is very irritating in that configuration, as are the extra zips on the foot.
What are the washing instructions for this sleeping bag? Can it be machine washed?
G'day Mahann,
It can be machine washed, but there's no further info on care instructions.
Usually big synthetic camping bags like this are recommended to be washed on a gentle or handwash cycle, and air-dried flat wherever possible to avoid the insulation clumping up. Realistically a bag this size would need to be washed at a laundromat with the large drum 20kg sized washing machines.
Washing big synthetic camping bags is a bit of a pain in the butt, and really shouldn't be done very often. You're much better off using a liner, and spot cleaning by hand where possible. Giving them an airing out of a summer's day is also beneficial.
Mine fits in my 10kg LG machine. The only down side is lugging it from the washing machine to the line. It's one heavy mother when wet. I am about to purchase my 3rd one.
Do you have a liner that can be used when the two bags are zipped together to make a double bed
G'day Wayne,
We do have a range of Double Liners available. Jump onto this link here, you'll find the double liners as the top listed options.
Hope that helps!
I’m looking at this sleeping bag and the Oztent Rivergum Series II (I’m seeing conflicting information online about the comfort rating for the Oztent one) and struggling to tell which would actually be warmer. Which would you say is the warmest based off rating and user experience?
G'day Grace,
Based on all available info I'd say the Big Game may have the edge over the Rivergum for warmth, but its hard to say with certainty. Ultimately neither Coleman or Oztent test their bags to the same standard, so their comfort temp testing methods may be vastly different. There are other variables such as the kind of mattress you're using, your own biochemistry, when you last ate, etc.
The only reason why I'm suggesting the Big Game may have the edge it because all user feedback has been positive, where as the Rivergum has had a review or two where it wasn't quite warm enough.
Hope that helps somewhat.
Hi, I really feel the cold and love the sound of this sleeping bag with flannel interior and canvas exterior. Bit worried it might be too big for my swag (214 x 116cm) though? What would you suggest? Thanks in advance.
G'day Gabrielle,
Your swag dimensions are larger than the dimensions of the sleeping bag, so you should be fine.
The sleeping bag is also measured flat, so once a 3D person is inside of it some of those dimensions will be taken up.
Hope that makes sense!
Thanks Lauren, makes sense. I actually cut paste the wrong dimensions (swag is only 214 x 85) but I take your point at 3D.
Would this be overkill for Top End ? Better choice Pilbara C5 ?
G'day Drew,
This will porbably come down to personal preference, but if you mainly camp in the top end then you might find the Big Game C-6 is a little too warm. The Pilbara C5 may well be a better choice unless you head south toward the desert, and then you might need the extra warmth for the chilly winter nights.
Cai i use double size sleeping bag as connect zip if i have 2?
G'day Luke,
Yes, you can zip two of the Big Game C-6 Sleeping Bags together for one very large double sleeping bag.
Hi Snowy's - we are thinking of purchasing to also use as a blanket in our swags. Regarding the integrated pillow - would this be in the way when its used as a blanket (ie would the pillow be bulky to lie under or is it just a subtle bump??) Thanks for clarifying as we couldn't really make out the shape of the pillow from the images.
G'day Donna,
These Big Game Sleeping Bags come with a separate pillow, they're not attached to the sleeping bag itself. They're essentially a half size pillow, with the same fabric used in the sleeping bag lining, so you can use it, or not use it as you see fit. Hopefully that helps!
Just bought one of these and I can't for the life of me find the integrated wrap and roll feature - there is no extra flap on my bag.... just a red string and hook - impossible to get it back into the original storage bag :(
G'day Catherine,
The Wrap N Roll feature is designed so that you can fold the bag in half lengthways and secure the edges using the red toggle and loops. Once they're secured you just roll the bag up and the side toggles stop the bag from widening as you roll. The trick to getting them back in is making sure your first part of the roll is nice and tight.
Hi - can you unzip the foot on this one so your feet don't get too hot?
G'day Shane,
I've just double checked this for you, and I can confirm that you can unzip the sleeping bag from the foot end to stick your toes out and cool them down!
Or can this bag be used wrong side up
G'day Peter,
You can just use the Big Game C-6 sleeping bag the other side up if that's what you prefer. Hope this helps, Peter.
What bag liner is suitable for this bag
G'day Paul,
You can pretty much use any sleeping bag liner with the Big Game sleeping bag as they're a pretty large bag. If you're after a little more warmth you could use the Coleman Stratus Fleece Liner, or if you're after just something to keep the inside of your bag clean then a cotton liner will do the trick.
Is this treated with any chemicals to make it water resistant or water proof? I’m very chemically sensitive!
G'day Esther,
Not to our knowledge, however we cannot provide any advice for allergies or sensitivities. Your best bet would be to contact Coleman directly to make sure they're not using anything that may cause you issues.
Perplexed.
G'day Bill,
The little red tabs are part of the Coleman Roll Control™ system. When you fold the bag in half just feed the toggle through to loop on the side and foot to keep the bag even when rolling it up.
Zipper
G'day Shane,
Yes the Big Game Sleeping Bag can be unzipped the whole way to use as a blanket.
Yes and I also unzip then zip 2 together for a giant sleeping bag!
both are Coleman sleeping bags
G'day Paul,
To be honest, we don't have a 100% clear answer for you at the moment, Paul. I would love to double check with Coleman when I'm able to get on the phone with a rep. We think you should be okay to zip them together as their zips should be compatible but I don't have a display model of the Coleman Big Game Sleeping Bag available to test. I'll get back to you on this one as quickly as I can.
G'day Paul,
I've just double checked with Coleman and yes you can zip the Big Game Sleeping Bag to the Pilbara C-5.
Just wondering if we can zipper 2 together? Cheers
You sure can Vanessa, but they get zipped together one on top of the other with the zipper running around the outside edge rather than side by side.
care instructions
G'day Jesse,
I've just double checked the washing instructions tag on the Coleman Big Game Sleeping Bag for you. They suggest using a sleeping bag liner & always opening your bag to air out after use. They recommend to spot clean your bag with luke-warm soapy water and a sponge when necessary and hand washing is preferred over machine washing unless the bag is really dirty. To dry, squeeze the bag out and then lay it in the sun, turning several times until it's dry. You shouldn't dry clean the sleeping bag.
