The conversation around Coleman’s Instant Up tents can become a little…
well, intents.
This episode of the Snowys Camping Show is no different, as Ben and Lauren exchange their interpretations of the range.

From tent pegs and air tents, to setups for summer and one-pot wonders – our gear gurus Ben and Lauren unpack the topics on every camper’s tongue, taking each minute to the limit with how-to’s, destinations, and expert interviews. Be it a swag, tent, or ‘swent’ – set up camp with us!
I have only had Coleman tents – from old style Coleman Hideaway 7 person, Riverview 7 person, Chalet 9XL, Instant up 8P silver, with side entry, to my all time favorite – Instant up coleman lighted darkroom 10pm. I have been through some ripper wind conditions, storms, and they have held up amazingly. Last January the winds ripped apart a campsite in Gipsland – even cabins lost roofs – but we were solid in our 10p instant up – fully pegged, verdanda down. For their practicality – especially for family camping – and for a long time I was single parent camping with 2 little kids – and they made it possible for us to have some beautiful holidays, with a tent that always held up when unexpected weather occured.
My family has had a Northstar darkroom 10P for about 3 years and it’s been great. With two young kids the dark lining has certainly made settling for sleep in summer much easier. Over time the dark lining gets pinholes so the darkness appears to be more like looking at sky of stars. I would say it’s a bit on the cold side to use in winter, that’s not unexpected in such a huge space though.
You are spot about the pegs and springs too. In heavy rain it has stayed perfectly dry inside, but strong gusty winds push it to it’s limits. I’ve always used springs on the awning side but wish I had for all the guy ropes. In one particularly strong wind a guy rope that I didn’t have a spring on tore off completely at the fly.
I usually put it up by myself, but it is a lot easier with two people. Moving it when packed it’s very heavy. I avoid camping where we have to carry it far from the car because it’s pretty awkward.
Three years in, I think it has performed great and would certainly recommend it to others looking for a huge family tent.
Thanks for your message, Ross! Ah, yes… trace springs and upgraded pegs are certainly approaches worth ‘tapping into’!
